I originally booked in March but due to Covid 19 they allowed me to move the date to 1st October.  I phoned a couple of days before I was due to go to confirm my arrival only to be told the hotel was closed.  The man said I would get a refund but  today received an  e-mail stating the room booking was non-refundable.  Way to go Clarence Gardens.   Customer service is rubbish.

I feel I have no other option but to publicly address The Clarence Gardens hotel regarding an ongoing complaint. I very rarely leave negative reviews, instead opting to resolve issues directly with merchants and businesses. In this case I have exhausted all possible avenues so I am forced to make my complaint public.

I booked to stay at the hotel from March 26 to 28. I contacted the hotel several times in the days before the date of the stay due to the impending Covid 19 crisis and closure of businesses. They assured me the hotel would be open on the dates and the stay was to go ahead as planned. Several days later the full lockdown was announced by the government so I contacted The Clarence Gardens who agreed to move the booking to 18 to 20 June.

Once the government announced that hospitality businesses could not re-open from at least 4 July I once again tried to contact the hotel to request my booking was moved again. I must stress that up to this point I wanted to support the business and wished for the stay to go ahead. I felt that after the impact of Covid 19 the hardest hit local businesses should need our support and wanted to come and stay and spend in the hotel. 

I have heard nothing after several attempts at contact via email and telephone. I had prepaid for my stay so I have now likely lost £126. It is possibly that the hotel has closed or the business folded due to the current circumstances and I am sympathetic towards this however I had hoped that some kind of communication could have been made. As a consumer I have also been affected by Covid 19 and being £126 out of pocket has its own damaging effect on myself.

I have involved booking.com in the complaint and they are making attempts to resolve this but they have advised there is little they will be able to do as the reservation was non-refundable. I do understand this however due to the circumstances and my inability to attend the hotel on the original or re-arranged dates, I feel that I have been let down.

I only post this in the hope that The Clarence Gardens see it and it may lead to some resolve.

I have lost £126 and all contact has ceased with hotel during Covid 19 crisis.

The staff were brilliant they couldn't do enough for you. Breakfast was unbelievable generous and very well presented. Unlimited fresh coffee and tea. Rooms a bit small and probably need a bit updating although linen was clean. Overall well worth the money.

Amazing

As a London commuter the joy of waking up and looking out to sea with the sound of the waves was just perfection.

This hotel is in a great location looking out over North Bay which was a short stroll down through the gardens to the sea front promenade. 

The hotel itself was great; after a long drive we were welcomed by a very friendly receptionist who told us they had put us in the apartment style room at the bottom of the hotel as there would be more room for us & our dog. 

The room was excellent really spacious, clean with all the amenities including a little fridge & a kitchen sink which was great addition.  Beds were really comfy and nice hot shower no matter what time of the day. 
There were no other rooms downstairs so no disturbances for the dog of people coming in and out which was great. 
It was opposite the dining room but we heard nothing from there, even though it appeared breakfast time was busy. 

All staff we interacted with were friendly, polite, helpful and a credit to the hotel.

Fantastic Hotel with Sea views

Enjoyed our stay,staff friendly and helpful, sea views from the family rooms lovely,more spacious also, breakfast was excellent and a good choice,free private parking as well if needed, location excellent for North bay,south bay a short walk

Clarence gardens

I promise you, you will be wasting your money and more over your time if you stay here, 

The cost was reasonable but coupled with fact the room honestly smelt of fish, and the “bed” was actually painful to try and sleep in it’s just not worth it in any respect

Waste of a stay

Just returned from a lovely 2 night stay.  Staff really friendly and helpfully.  Especially the lady at reception when we arrived.  Bed very comfy.  Room spacious and clean. Breakfast was fab.  Would highly recommend and would return.

Walking weekend

Firstly, I never like writing a negative review, but feel in this case I have no option. 
Hotel booked from Friday 29th Nov - Sun 1st Dec. 

We booked through Booking.com and wished we had taken the cancellation facility as the room(s) we were offered and shown, were absolutely nothing like in the photo's! Cheryl, on Reception was lovely, but the rooms were awful. Not the beautiful pastel, clean fresh looking rooms, as shown in the photographs. 
The 3 rooms we were offered all had awful smells to them, which was even worse in the bathrooms, none of which looked as clean as you would expect. The hotel inside looks very drab, and walking along the narrow corridors, you could feel the holes in the floor through the carpet. 
We were told the TV in the 3rd room we were offered, which was on the wall, didn't work, so a free standing one had been put on the dressing table - this didn't work either! When we mentioned it to Cheryl, she said someone would take a look, but it worked last week as the room was used. We went out for about an hour, and got back to find Cheryl trying to sort it herself. The TV was never going to work as there was no aerial or set top box, so no signal going to the TV.
We had booked from the Friday to Sunday and paid the £126.40 and, after a 3 hour drive to get there, we decided to cut our losses and go home! Never again would I book a hotel without paying the extra cancellation element. 
To say we were extremely disappointed in this hotel would be an understatement. 
I would just like to know what rooms the positive reviews are referring to, as they cant be the rooms we were offered, 2 of which had a wardrobe no bigger than a foot wide!
Not sure about the sleep quality as we didn't stay long enough, but I can't change the opinion rating to no opinion. 
All in all, we were very disappointed, and misled by the lovely photographs, so a complete waste of money as far as we are concerned!

Don't Believe Everything You Read or See

View - Beautiful.
Room - Firstly given the smallest room that I have seen in a hotel of any kind. Hairs in shower so asked to be moved. No sea view rooms available so was offered a family room. Was a lot nicer with plenty of space. However there was so much in the room and hotel that needed updating. The lounge and bar area was updated and looked lovely. Bit gutted as was expecting the room and sea view to be as the pictures on the site. 
Must say the lady on the reception was lovely and a great help.

Dissapointed

Excellent guest house , room was very nice, very clean, tea coffee, shampoo etc, we booked a sea view room and we could see scarborough Castle at one end and the beach and sea leading to the sea life centre. Really nice. The hosts were very friendly and helpful. And we both said it was the best breakfast and best breakfast selection we've ever had, there was toast cereal, fruit, raspberries, melon, blueberries etc, continental, then a fantastic full English, fruit juice.. Etc.. Theres a nice Seaview lounge with a bar. We didn't find it far to walk into the main shopping, pub area, which was very nice.. At the reception they have leaflets with ideas of what do do and where to go.. We enjoyed our weekend and would definetly stay here again if we visit scarborough again.
