Was having a lovely experience at the pub we visit nearly once a month with family, but a local teenager allowed to walk rite past bar staff stinking of marajuana (weed) and not even stopped and continued into the hotel were we have stopped and to find out it’s the landlady sons and friends and nothing happens. I really have lost faith here and will now go else where till this stops. We heard a few locals mentioned this but again no action taken

Cracking stay and really made to feel special by the staff .
Phillipa in particular was very polite and professional.
I did eat and the meal was presented and tasted very nice . 
I would definitely return in future .

Just passing through

We went for a belated Xmas meal and were forced to pre order without seeing the accompanying menus. It turned out all choices came as part of a Xmas dinner. Very odd. I wanted a steak pie and I got one plonked in the middle of a Xmas dinner with Yorkshire pudding and pigs in blankets. Obviously I expected chips and peas or something that went with pie? Maybe mash. Other minor things like over seasoned tomato soup, a gravy drought and running out of  preordered vegetarian choices all added up to an underwhelming experience and a sense that the owners or managers don’t keep an eye on things like the menu. We don’t live nearby and even if we did it would be a stretch to go back for food at least.

Xmas menu promised alternatives but didn’t deliver

Our overall stay was lovely and our kids really enjoyed it! However, there were a few things we had issues with.
In the morning my sister was on her way down to breakfast from room 4 with 2 kids, however, the firedoor entrance was locked to the hotel and we didnt know of any other exit/entrance. The only response she got from the lady was 'your early (10mins)...
Heating didnt work in room 4
Heater in room 22 bathroom didnt work and window wouldnt shut so going for a pee in the night was a COLD experience!
When we were having our evening meal, one of the kids knocked over a glass of water on the floor and the staff handed us a mop to clean it up instead of doing it for us.
As I say, our overall stay was great but felt like these few things needed mentioning...we would go back again so it hasn't put us off

Great Stay

We stayed in a family room while attending an event in a nearby village. Check in was easy that afternoon with the chap advising breakfast times, explaining how to use the key code if we came in late and advising how to get to our room. When we went upstairs to our room it was Baltic! The bathroom window was open and the radiator in the bedroom was turned off even though it was extremely cold outside. We turned the radiator on and closed the bathroom window as well as we could (the latch was broken but it pulled closed) then pulled the blind down in the bathroom and closed the connecting doors. By the time we returned 7hrs later the room was nice and warm. It would’ve been awful if we’d decided to check in after our event instead of before, though, and when expecting visitors on a cold day in January I’d have expected them to turn the heating on instead of leaving it off and with a window open. 

The beds and bedding were really comfortable. The room and bathroom were clean (although the toilet was stained and could do with some Domestos Zero and a good scrub) and the tea, coffee and milk were plentiful. One 2pk of biscuits for a family of 4 was a bit stingy but a minor point. The soap in the wall dispensers was really nice. Our room (4) overlooked the garden at the back and was quiet. For some reason there was no cold water (usually it’s the opposite!) and your choice was very hot water from the hot tap or warm water from the cold which was ok apart from when we wanted to make a glass of cold orange squash for the kids. The taps and sink were such that you could easily fill the kettle unlike some hotels where they’re tiny and the kettle won’t fit under the tap.

We paid to stay for breakfast in the morning. The staff were really nice and accommodating (swapping our fried eggs for poached) and the service was pretty quick. Continental breakfast (which the kids had) consisted of croissants, pain au chocolat, white or brown toast and cereal. The toaster was set just right for a change (not anaemic or burnt) and the condiments consisted of marmite and honey in plentiful quantities and marmalade if you got in quick (two portions left when we got there as first residents of the day). No jams if you’d prefer that. The proper butter was soft enough to spread unlike places where it’s so chilled and hard that it wrecks your bread or toast. A choice of juices and tea or coffee. Fruit consisted of apples and oranges but the knives on the table were really blunt so when I tried to cut up an apple for the children I destroyed it! The only things I’d have liked that were missing were yogurts and bananas. Again, a minor point. 

Parking was easy and there’s a small shop next door if you’ve forgotten any essentials. I believe there were 7 rooms in the main hotel building and a further block on the other side of the car park. I was absolutely satisfied with my stay and would definitely book again in the same circumstances where we needed to stay in this vicinity. The dropped star for a 4 star instead of a 5 star review was a culmination of little things mentioned above but mostly our room being freezing cold with the radiator turned off and a window open in January, so if we’d checked in late and not had chance to close the window and ensure the heating was on for a few hours while we were out, it would’ve been a pretty miserable stay in that room.

Great staff. Comfortable hotel stay.

We booked 2 nights on the 07/02/2023 for the 17th and 18th for my 2 daughters (aged 9 and 7) and me. Just drove 210 miles and went to check in. They had no details of our booking. I showed them the confirmation email fromBooking.com. They said that Booking.com had cancelled the booking at 12:03am on the 15/02. I’ve just found the cancellation email, not having expected to have to look for it. The hotel said that they had 4 single rooms left, but would not let us check in. We have tried to find another hotel, but everything is fully booked. We now have to drive 210 miles back home. It was both of my daughters’ birthday this week, so it was meant to be a birthday treat.

Excellent service from arriving at check-in to the best breakfast I have eaten in years! Love the quiz and the fact that hotel guests can join in! The bed is large and comfy, and the rooms are newly decorated, giving it a fresh and airy feel. Nothing is too much trouble, and it's great to see longevity I the team members. They clearly love their jobs! Well done all 

Comfy, friendly, and best breakfast ever

Beautiful food with a show …. The staff were so friendly and pleasant …even the entrance was cosy and inviting …had a wonderful evening great food with great friends …fabulous evening all round….toilets were spotless ….show was great …..even the outside view was beautiful

Beautiful place lovely cosy feel

The bed is so comfy! Had one of the best nights sleep that I have had in a while! Comfortable and clean! Newly decorated room. It's good to see a business keep rooms updated! Breakfast was well cooked with a good choice for ourselves and the children! Staff are very friendly, helpful, and particularly good with our children! Pub is clean and tidy with some lovely added touches, sweet jar, and glasses for reading the daily newspapers! 

Best nights sleep

The staff at the Owl are very pleasant and always helpful. We were welcomed with a smile and felt there was a great atmosphere. The food was lovely and the beer was spot on. Good value on both counts, look forward to coming back again.
