Cons 
I don’t know how this ever got a rating of 4*. 
It could be amazing but it’s a shell with a cheap interior. Needs a complete refurb. 
Staff took us to the lift and said they would take the stairs and meet us on the second floor as the lift was for 2 people max. More than two or a family? 
The stairs are stone and spiral which people with mobility would struggle with. 
 No disabled access if the lift stops working. 
Bed frame held together with cable ties
The shower was useless. The water was either scalding hot or freezing and the pressure so low it took an age to shower. We didn’t shower on the second day, dodging freezing then scalding water  and no dry towels  made it a tough ask. If you are a larger person then maybe the shower door opening would be a problem. 
The sink is tiny just adequate for teeth brushing.
Definitely bring toilet roll. 
The curtains are awful and all the windows have vinyl stuck to them so absolutely no views. It’s a room full of cheap mismatch furniture, more like a 2*
The cobwebs on the bathroom window were big so I guess not cleaned in a while. 
No housekeeping so no bed made, no clean/dry towels. 
Tea bags, toilet rolls etc for the first day only and then nothing, no bins emptied in the room at all. 
What they don’t say is the hotel is unmanned when the cafe shuts. The entrance is a glass sliding door, stairs on the left, lift on the right. Anyone can walk in and go to your room at any time of the day as totally unmanned. There isn’t a safe in the room. 
No phone in the room. 
The furniture is such a mix of cheap tat and a clothes rail in the middle of the room is the wardrobe. 
It’s not boutique and there is definitely no spa. 
Reception is in the cafe which smelt like a greasy spoon so we decided not to chance the food. 
We paid £129 a night, no breakfast.The description states breakfast available but we were never told or offered the option.  

On the second day when the bed was still unmade and wet towels I asked about housekeeping at the reception and I was told it’s nothing to do with the cafe, the manager is outside. 
It’s obviously that the cafe staff don’t want to attend to the hotel reception/issues. 
The manager was abrupt and not happy that I had asked. 
General housekeeping is an issue as we shared the lift with a bin bag full of waste.
Had this hotel had a an honest star rating we would never have booked it and we certainly would never return. 
Much classier hotels in town which are cheaper and include full English, housekeeping and clean linen. As it was a last minute booking they were all full. 
Shrewsbury huge yes. This hotel definitely not.

Never a 4 star hotel, more like a 2*

St Nicholas definitely has the wow factor especially my bedroom ‘The Queen Victoria’.  A renovated old church with some interesting original features. Situated near to the castle and opposite the library.  Only 5 minutes walk from railway station and taxi service.  Well located for shops and main tourist attractions.
A lovely warm welcome by Ryan and other staff who very helpful.

Great Location to visit Shrewsbury

Such a shame. A beautiful old building, friendly staff, nice breakfast, however, Dirty, dusty room, with no character or charm and someone’s dirty underwear left on the floor. 
The shower pretty terrible, broken toilet seat. 
A major disappointment.

Currently staying in this boutique with my partner! The whole place is amazing, spotlessly clean room, comfortable bed and fabulous original features. I’d highly recommend this place and the staff are so friendly, polite and welcoming. I couldn’t fault anything. Nikki & Stu, Liverpool 😁

Nice enough hotel , let down by the service in the morning when explained there was no hot water , offered a complimentary tea or coffee which was quite disappointing , and for the price paid could have at least offered something like a partial refund

I enthusiastically endorse this establishment. The impeccable service, delectable cuisine, and remarkable affordability make dining at Nicholas Bar and Grill an extraordinary experience, greatly enhanced by the presence of Ryan who has excellent customer service skills.

Excellent service in a very beautiful town.

 It was a sunny day and we wanted to sit outside so the staff bought tables and chairs outside for us! Great staff. Great cocktails. Great Pizza . What more could you want.! Lovely place within easy reach of the train station . We will be back soon I hope 

Great gem

Let down by the hundreds of cigarette butts all over the entrance outside seating area.It literally is a carpet of them, not helped by watching staff just flicking them on floor.How on earth management have just ignored it is beyond belief.Its such a shame because everything else was fine.

Friendly staff nice food

This hotel is absolutely gourgous and all of the staff and mangers can not do enough for you , rooms are beutiful and well presented with all the usual complimentarys plus complimentary soft drinks in the fridge (however this was slightly let down by the fridge not being cold) everyone was friendly and the food was gourgous we had a great evening meal and breakfast .
We were however disapointed that the spa has now been turned into a cocktail bar that wasnt open , so around £120 a night for a lovely comfy room that only has stained glass windows and a fridge with warm cans of pop in as extras is a little excessive expecially since we had to pay £20 for breakfast on top!
 For that reason we would not stay here again as we could have been just as comfy in a premier inn at half the price . That said if you have money to burn the location for town , train station , prison and castle is excellent and we would deffinatly recommend it to our friends .

Lovely hotel let down by price

Fantastic stay here!!Eddie the owner and Craig the manager were fabulous staff went out of their way to help you and couldn't do enough for you. The rooms are stunningly  clean and spacious and comfortably warm. The breakfast was huge with good quality ingredients with coffee topups.  Will definatly go back soon, would absolutely recommend this stunning converted church with quirky feature's.  Location is superb, 4 mins walk from railway station,  central to all amenities.  You will get a warm professional service here from Eddie, Craig and all the staff. Thankyou from Annette & Phill, see you soon😊.x
