Stayed for one night. The food is very good; staff is helpful and friendly; the ambiance and atmosphere is really nice; comfortable room; everything was great and I would recommend this lovely place for food and sleep.

We took a friend for lunch. 
Padron peppers for starters- lovely. Lamb pitta, tortellini, and a steak ordered for mains, both meat dishes were excellent, melted in the mouth and tasty.  Pasta was a delight to the eyes   Couldn’t fault the food or service from Sophie  
Shared the plum tart with cream  sooo nice, 
 Spent a lovely afternoon there, will be back again 

Took a friend for lunch

Wonderful atmosphere, friendly folks, outstanding food.  We hadn’t planned where to eat and just happened up on the wonderful place. Usually that doesn’t work out well but this time we hit the jackpot. They even gave us information where we could buy reading glasses. The staff just went above and beyond the expected.

Excellent choice

Arrived at The Cricketers on Friday 7th July after a very challenging local walk (it was a hot day)

My wife was not feeling too good from heat exhaustion. Matt who served us our initial drinks noticed this and offered plenty of cold water including ice cubes in a tea towel to help. It did the job! (He also revealed, that he was a paramedic so he knew what to do to help relieve the condition)

Needless to say we were very well looked after.

The food we ordered was delivered promptly and was outstanding in quality and taste, as well as being very good value. We have no hesitation in recommending this pub, which has very recently changed hands.

We enjoyed our experience so much that we have booked an overnight stay (they also do bed and breakfast) for another visit to the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. 

Many thanks again to Matt and Huw who really went the extra mile to ensure we had the very best possible visit to their excellent pub. 


The Cricketers, a charming English country pub nestled in Steep, a Hampshire Village.

A fantastic place to eat and stay. Huw and the team made us so welcome from the moment we arrived and looked after us brilliantly.  The food was delicious and all freshly prepared - we had breakfasts and dinners there. Top tip if you like pork scratchings - their home-made pork puffs are delicous to have with a drink! Rooms were comfortable and clean, and great decor making you feel right at home. Thank you for a great stay.

A great place to eat and stay

A small pub/inn in Steep, which is a few minutes drive from the centre of Petersfield.    The room allocated was clean, quiet and well equipped, having been recently refurbished by the look of things.   I had a very comfortable two night stay there.   The staff, we’re friendly and helpful (albeit some in need of more training and experience of bar work), with particular  mention to to the manager - Hugh, who went out if his way to help us with transportation to downtown Petersfield.   The food quality was good but the menu was limited and a tad on the pricy side for a pub/inn style restaurant.  The same to be said for drinks, where standard brand spirits (e.g. Gordons) was simply not available.  
In the whole, I’d recommend this little place without hesitation for a short stay and I think you’ll be very happy with the level of service provided by the very friendly and helpful staff.

A nice place to stay in Petersfield.

We are from Kent and decided to try this pub for a quick bite to eat on our way to the new forest for the weekend. 
Well all I can say is amazing food, amazing drink and the most amazing staff, couldn’t do enough for you. The food was all home made and absolutely delicious, hubby had the sausage roll, fabulous! Mum had the cheese board, Wow! And I had the scotch egg, out of this world! We will be back that’s for sure.

What a beautiful little gem in the country side, as soon as you arrive in the car park the warm welcome greets you even before you get out of the car, there is a decking area all around the outside of the building with plenty of seating areas, when we went inside we were met with a smile and a hello how are you, beautifully decorated with cow hides on the floor and colourful seating, an old church pew and plenty of room for people and dogs, we decided to sit outside as it was such a lovely day, we had cider to drink and we ordered our food at the bar, well what a feast we had i ordered the fish and chips which came with crushed minted peas and tartar sauce which I don't usually like but I ate all of it and the peas were divine, the fish was perfectly cooked and the batter was light and crisp, my husband had the handmade Hampshire  burger and hand cut chips with coleslaw, we shared the burger and the fish between us and the burger was juicy the  bacon was crispy and the coleslaw and the chips were perfect,  the staff are friendly and welcoming and they have B&B rooms which we will be staying in as soon as we possibly can. What an absolute pleasure of a lunch date, can't fault any of it. 

Lunch in the sun 🌞 

This meal was booked as a birthday surprise for me. The pub was extremely busy, and extremely hot inside. It took us half an hour to receive our drinks (we could see them sat on the bar but weren't allowed to collect them ourselves). There was a young girl who's first day working there was not given any management or direction at all. We weren't the biggest table there, yet we seemed the be table that was most ignored as none of the staff wanted to really serve us! It was disappointing that we had to wait over 15 minutes to order our food, and then another 45 minutes for our starters to be delivered. My mother in law just wanted bread and butter, and the bread turned up with mould on it! The starters were okay, nothing extraordinary. We eventually got our mains, and the roast dinner was good, although I "clearly looked like the vegetarian" so I had to order mine separately which is fine. They were kind enough to give us containers to take some food home. The final straw was then bringing the plates out for my surprise birthday cake, which then wasn't a surprise because they then looked surprised that I hadn't had my birthday cake delivered to the table! Finally, the waitress looked even more surprised when she came to take our dessert order and I said well, we would've done if we'd had the dessert menus! Gosh, if looks could kill! Just to top it off, it then took them another 15 minutes to find the cake box that they'd probably chucked away. I'm sure they thought I was balancing it on my lap on the way home. 
Overall, it was incredibly poor management, the staff weren't managing their tables properly, other people were getting served quicker than those waiting, it had no form of ventilation and no one seemed to be overly fussed about their service or looking after the clients. Plenty more pubs to try. Thank you for ruining my birthday lunch with your dire service. and yes I have worked in hospitality too, so I know how it runs properly and that wasn't it! 

Very disappointing birthday meal thanks for ruining the experience! 

First time at the cricketers inn and I have nothing negative to say the food was amazing you definitely won’t go hungry with the Carvery staff are welcoming and friendly even when they are busy they were so attentive, will definitely be back again .
