Had an overnight stay at this Travelodge.

It was easy to find by sat nav, there were several roadworks in Sunderland city centre which made things tricky.

As I was there on a saturday night there were no parking charges at the hotel car park.

Check in was rapid, they had my reservations. There were many people checking in at the same time, a few had issues.

The room was typical Travelodge standard. I stayed at another Travelodge a few days earlier. So I knew what to expect.

There was a double bed, tea and coffee making facilities. A small television.

The bathroom was adequate with a shower.

The hotel offered a breakfast box which I declined to take.

I noted that the security guard walked round the hotel on the saturday night.

I had a decent night sleep and checked out early next morning.

There was not too many things around the hotel I noticed. In the evening a few of use drove around looking for something to eat.

It was a comfortable one night stay.

Great hotel, staff always friendly and helpful with all the things you could ever need! Nothing was too much for the team and they went out their way to help. Storm Arwen was a beast but I felt like I was treated like royalty here!

Great hotel.  Reception Staff are friendly, helpful & efficient.  Check in was quick. 

Room immaculate.  Bed comfortable.  Great night sleep. 

For when we have a night out in the town this is our go to place to stay.   Lovely Restaurants within walking distance.  

There is a 24 hour secure carpark behind the hotel. We parked after 6pm Saturday night & left around 10:30am Sunday morning the next day & were charged about £5. 

Well done to the staff at this Travel Lodge. You are doing a fantastic job.

Excellent Travel Lodge

Stayed here last night after the area we live in had a power cut and my wife is disabled and can honestly say that it was fantastic. Very clean and comfortable. The staff on reception when we arrived could have done any more for us. A massive thank you

Absolutely brilliant

Stayed here when I came up to see the Rocky Horror Show at the Sunderland Empire. Stayed alone on the first night and my sister joined me the second night. 
I found the hotel quite difficult to find. It’s on a random piece of almost wasteland at the extreme end of the town. Fortunately it isn’t too far into the centre once you know how.
First thing I would say is that there are no shops in the vicinity. I’m diabetic and need to eat at fairly rigid times so when I arrived I immediately figured out this was going to be a problem. I got a taxi to the local 24 hour Asda and stocked up then my sister and I had breakfast at Wetherspoons on the Sunday morning. If you have any kind of food issues make sure you stock up before you arrive! 
I did notice people outside but again wasn’t really bothered by them. There’s some lovely bars on the street just opposite- we went to Mr Jack’s and The Old Church which is a charming micro pub. 
Room wise- absolutely fine. Clean and comfy, bed was spot on, shower was decent. Only complaint is the room was quite stuffy so had to leave the window open and on Saturday night cars kept waking me up. No issues with noise inside the hotel though. 
I’m up again in December but next time I think we’ll stay in the other Travelodge, simply because it’s a bit nearer where we need to be. Not a slight on this place- it’s just a bit out of the way that’s all. 
The staff we encountered were all lovely too- from the receptionist who checked me in to the two ladies who we saw finishing their cleaning tasks at the end of their shift when we returned late Saturday. I will say however that this hotel was far better than the godawful supposed Hilton hotel I stayed in Thursday night! I stay in Travelodge Vauxhall in London a lot and I guess I’m kind of spoiled by that as it’s absolutely superb but if you’re looking for somewhere clean and comfy in Sunderland to base yourself for a night or two, this place definitely does the job.

Looked nice from outside but outdated on the inside. The TV and decor in room looked like hand me downs. The toilet paper was of very low quality - I'm sure sandpaper would have been much more soothing on the backside. No biscuits in room :(

Nice on outside, inside outdated

I've just returned from a wonderful 6 nights in Sunderland, which was a base for trips to South and North Shields, as well as Newcastle and Tynemouth, all of which are easily accessible using local transport links. As some of the reviews have mentioned already, there do seem to be a lot of men hanging around outside in the evenings, but luckily, I wasn't bothered by any of them. My room was in a quiet corner of the 3rd floor, with a sea view, for which I was very grateful. Check-in was quick and with it being cool and the windows shut, there wasn't any noise and I had a very restful sleep all week, which is practically unheard of for me. On the down side, the cleaning could've been better. When I arrived, the bathroom sink was full of dirty water. To avoid causing a fuss, I lifted out the plug with a pen. The next morning, I spotted bits of tissue in my bed. When I left the notice out for fresh towels and bin emptying, the bin was left on top of the desk and I'm not sure if the towels were changed, because there was one folded up under the mirror and the regular 2 on handrail. The bathroom bin wasn't emptied for the duration of my stay.  I understand that there's a lack of staff in current times, but I also think that *because* of these times, cleaning is more important than ever, but I also know that times are hard and these are minor complaints. Overall, I was very happy with my stay and the room went beyond my expectations. I was back early evening most days, but if I was a solo traveller coming back late, I'd probably worry about my safety and opt for the other Travelodge in Sunderland. Once inside though, I felt perfectly safe. Reception seems to be mostly unmanned though, which is worth bearing in mind. The reception staff I did speak to briefly were polite and efficient.

A lovely stay, with a few minor issues

Sunderland High Street West is the location of one of two Travelodges within Sunderland City Centre. The hotel is located in a part of the City called Sunnyside and is within a two-minute walk to Sunderland Bowl and about a five-minute walk to the nearest 'Vue' cinema. It can be difficult to find if you do not know the city well but once you have found it, it is fairly easy to negotiate yourself with your surroundings and how to get to the main part of the City. 

If you arrive in the City on public transport or via Metro or train, it will take you around 10 to 15 minutes to make your way from the main bus exchange or train station to the hotel making your way through the centre of the City. 

Next to the hotel there is the 'Sunnyside Complex' which includes a Casino and Sunderland Bowl. There is also a Nandos within two minutes walk as well as a couple of bars. The main part of the City Centre is towards the bottom part of the where the bus exchange is located and before The Bridges Shopping Centre which is where you will find the majority of bars, restaurants and takeaways. 

The hotel is ideally located for an overnight (or for a couple of nights) stay if you want a room that is of good value, that will not cost a significant amount, yet is located not so far from the City Centre that you rely on taxis or buses to get there. This is always our hotel of choice when we stay in Sunderland because we know where it is and how to navigate from there as a base and because we know what we are expecting when we arrive. 

The hotel is located down what appears to be a slightly odd and abandoned street, tucked behind a building that houses Sunderland Bowl (an indoor gaming and bar complex). It only becomes visible when you walk towards it and you observe a large and slightly poorly maintained sign. 

You enter from the left-hand side of the road up some steps (or a ramp) and you enter into an entrance hall with a vending machine and two lifts. There is hand sanitizer next to the lift and guests are advised to wear face coverings at all times during the communal areas and to only share lifts with members of their household. There are also some stairs opposite the lifts which lead to all floors. Reception is on floor 1 and is directly opposite the doors you come out of from the lift.

Reception consists of a small reception desk and there are markers on the floor to keep people socially distanced.

If you book online, you are asked to complete the 'Track and Trace' information for all guests who are staying with you in the hotel and then you have to show that this has been completed to the receptionist (you get sent an email you show). If you have not had time to do this or have not booked online, you can do this at the hotel using your phone to scan the QR code.  Once you have confirmed your NHS 'Track and Trace' you will be checked in and given your room key. 

The hotel does offer a 'Breakfast to go' which consists of a piece of fruit, a pastry, a bowl of cereal and a carton of juice for around £5.90 (ish) which you can order at reception or when you are booking. There is a vending machine in the entrance hall that you can use to pay by card that has snacks in it should you require any food during your stay. 

We have stayed at this hotel several times over the last year (when we have been able) and this time, we were placed in a room on the third floor where we had not stayed before. We were given an accessible room at our request. 

Entering the room, it smelled clean and was at an ambient temperature. To the right was a large bathroom fully equipped with all of the relevant accessible equipment from a shower sheet with handrails to a wetroom style floor and all-around shower curtain for privacy when showering. There were also handrails and grab rails located in the room to help mobility between the shower and toilet. Help cords were also located within easy reach should help be required. There was a large mirror, a sink, and three towels (two large and one small).  There is shampoo, body wash and handsoap in dispensers next to the shower and sink. 

In the room were two twin beds located next to each other as well as a chair and a sideboard that can double as a writing desk. There is a kettle and a container with tea, coffee, decaf coffee, sugar, sweeteners and milk. There are two cups with spoons and a bottle opener found on the edge of the sideboard.

There was a TV remote - although the remote we had worked on, it did not appear to be the correct one for the TV as it did not have any effect when pressed despite the lights on the control coming on.

There are two additional pillows located on a shelf above a hanging rail which includes a small number of hangers. There is a double socket where the kettle is, one under the mirror and another double sock next to the heater. 

Unfortunately, the socket under the mirror did not work which was fine for me because I only needed it to work but if this was for a person's breathing machine or oxygen monitor, it may cause issues.

NB - I was going to report the socket and the control on checking out but there was no one there to speak to. 

There is not an iron and ironing board so if you require one, you will need to ask at reception. 

Overall, the hotel is generally clean and is quite quiet. We have, however, noticed that on the last three times we have stayed which included a bank holiday weekend and one at the start of the week, there does appear to be a prominent smell of cannabis some nights making their way through the hotel corridors which is quite unpleasant. I have been outside vaping when you can smell it emanating from customers coming into the hotel (which I am aware cannot be helped) but there are also times when it is so pungent that it appears to permeate every level of the building and made me feel a bit queazy. At one point during one visit, we witnessed what appeared to be a drug deal with a guest and a car driver which was then supported by the smell of cannabis floating down the hall half an hour later. 

I am aware that the hotel cannot stop customers from smoking cannabis outside (as long as it is not on their premises) but they must have some ability to do something about individuals smoking it on the premises and in their rooms (given that they are no smoking). I could have found the source of it myself by following the prominence of the smell that is how bad it is. Each people can make their own choices in life but if it affects other people then I feel it needs to be addressed and not ignored given that this appears to now becoming a frequency when we stay including our most recent visit. 

Overall, for what you pay, in the location the hotel is and how clean it is, I think that this hotel offers a good value stay which is why we keep returning. The staff that we have interacted with are pleasant and polite, the building and rooms are generally clean and the noise inside and outside is minimal but that said, I do think there are improvements to be made to the signage (to make it look more professional and be more visible) and to tackle some of the antisocial behaviour mentioned previously. 

It is worth staying here? I would say if you are wanting a cheap and convenient getaway somewhere close to the amenities and public transport then you cannot go wrong with staying at this Travelodge.

Good value hotel, located centrally but sometimes hit and miss with experiences

I always choose Travelodge as they all have a very high standard of cleanliness. The accomodation is always very simple and straighforward which is the way I like it. Sunderland is absolutely no exception. Again they did make it a very pleasant stay and I highly recomend this choice.

Good simple and clean

My son and I stayed for a night after a football match on Saturday.

Room was very clean. Beds were good and there was a bath and shower which was good.
