Food was amazing. We had Sunday lunch and breakfast. Lovley crackling on the pork was delicious. Beds were really comfy and Rooms were spotless. Full English breakfast was really good and the chef made fruit compote and muesli were absolutely sublime.Would highly recommend.

Good breakfast and comfortable rooms.

Just returned from the most wonderful stay in Plum Cottage at the Compasses Inn. We've eaten at the Compasses before and loved it and so we decided to return with some friends and stay at Plum Cottage this time. What a treat! The cottage is absolutely stunning with wonderful attention to detail - every little thing  has been considered to ensure you have a fantastic stay. It's been decorated with a clean and modern style which beautifully compliments the olde worlde style of the pub. We felt very lucky to be able to step out of the door of the cottage and straight into the pub and then not have to travel after our superb dinner. Our trip was finished off perfectly with a delicious breakfast the following morning. 
It was an ideal mini-break which we would recommend to anyone looking to treat themselves. Will definitely be going back. Highly recommended.

Wonderful stay at Plum Cottage.

Excellent little pub with lovely atmosphere. A little off the beaten track, but this is what makes it such a homely venue. Ample parking. Lovely home cooked food throughout and very nice selection of wine. This was a lunchtime visit and we would definitely recommend.

Lunch get together!

The room was clean, comfortable and despite the heavy rain, very quiet.  We had a great evening meal with a very good choice of wines. All the food was freshly prepared. We were the only residents for breakfast and were offered a wide choice of dishes.   The staff were very friendly and they made us (and the dog) most welcome.

Excellent stay

Excellent food from this lovely hidden away gem. A marsala fish cake… and green chilli burger - pub food but with oodles of flavour. 

Really interesting take on a typical pub menu - the seasoning, and flavour way exceeded expectations. Delish!

Excellent food and great service

On the way down to Somerset, we broke up the journey with a lovely overnight stay at compasses Inn. 
From booking in to departure, all of the staff were friendly and it was lovely sitting in front of a roaring fire after a long afternoon stroll in the beautiful nearby surroundings. 
The evening meal and breakfast were both top quality with a decent range of drinks and local beers.
Overall, a lovely stay and one I hope to repeat in the near future.

Well worth navigating yourself to Compasses Inn

We stayed one night . I can honestly say it’s the best pub bed and breakfast we have ever had. We were in room 1, which was so cosy and spotlessly clean. Our evening meal was of a very high standard, with excellent service. Breakfast was also very good. The interior of this inn is fantastic!  Stay here and you won’t be disappointed.

Wonderful Stay!

How nice it was to come in from the cold to be greeted by the barman and welcomed into a traditional pub - quarry tiled floor, scrubbed wooden tables and chairs, and a log fire with a dog in front of it.
Great service and a really good menu, complimented by good food.

Great traditional English pub

The Compasses Inn lies down a peaceful country lane in the scattered community of Lower Chicksgrove. Located on the north facing slopes of the lovely Nadder River valley 12 miles from Salisbury, the overwhelming impression on arrival is of wonderful peacefulness. History has it that the Compasses has been the village pub since the 14th century, and parts of the building certainly appear to date back to that period.
Finding the pub for the first time is not easy, and  I would strongly advise beginning the search from the A30 road which runs from East to West between Salisbury and Shaftesbury. (If you have access to an Ordnance Survey map see below.)

Apart from location, it is the wonderful hospitality that puts The Compasses Inn at a special level of excellence. There are six bedrooms,  four of which are accessed via the front lawn which is set out at a higher level than the Bar and Dining area, where the flagstones were almost certainly laid down in 14th century . 

Four of the bedrooms are clearly part of a very old building, have been refurbished and are spotlessly clean, cosy and comfortable, with windows that look out over the surrounding fields. The other two bedrooms are in a 19th century farm cottage adjacent to the main building, and upgraded to the same high standard as the other four rooms.

As far as eating at The Compasses goes the food takes a bit of beating. Lunch and dinner menus are based on locally sourced food cooked in the English style by a team of excellent chefs. The wine list  contains mainly Eurtopean wines, matches the wide ranging menus, and is reasonably priced.  

Our experience of two stays at the Compasses have both been delightful and the pub is to be highly recommended.

 ( Route directions: See below.}Leave the A30 main road at GRID REFERENCE 983277 and follow the unsignposted lane heading north for about 300 yards where  the lane begins to bear RIGHT, and another appears on the LEFT side of the lane. Take this  very narrow lane, slightly up and down heading north and passing a few cottages and houses. After about five minutes you will find the welcome sight  of The Compasses Inn).


A step back in time.

We've been to the Compasses on a few occasions. Each time, the food has been wonderful - excpetional quality, expertly put together, with no pretence. Heightening the experience is the pub itself; charming, comforting and dreamily located in a gorgeous nook of Wiltshire . It is pretty much what you dream a pub should be (but is so hard to find).
