This was booked less than a month prior to our stay – having had 2 foreign holidays  and 2 UK trips away cancelled this year due to the Covid-19 problems we were keen for a change of scenery. We had been hoping to be nearer the coastal area, but everywhere was booked up; this is only 10 miles from Plymouth and the reviews on Booking.com were positive (there were no reviews in well over a year on Tripadvisor - lesson learned). 

In reality, I can only liken it to the Local Shop in Royston Vasey, complete with Edward & Tubbs……if you get that reference you are probably on the same wavelength as us and will steer clear.

This is a small guest house with 3 bedrooms located on a main road 3 miles from Tavistock. There were some positives – the place was very clean. There is a car park. The bedroom was spacious. The bed was very comfortable.

On the downside, there is an ever present smell of stale cigarette smoke in the reception/dining area. I do have quite a sensitive sense of smell but the building is a former public house and I doubt that it will ever completely rid itself of the smell that has become ingrained within its structure. It’s quite dark and dingy. The décor is extremely dated and no effort at all has been made with the outside area. In fact, there was a pile of old junk right outside the window within clear sight of the main dining table. The food we had (breakfast) was, at best, average. There was no breakfast menu and the only fruit juice served is concentrate – fine if you want a glass of cheap liquid sugar, but my standards are higher.

One of the most appealing factors when deciding to book here was that the website stated that it had a restaurant and bar and several reviews spoke of the wonderful evening meals that had been served. (I note that since our stay the website has been updated and dining information changed) So, upon arrival at approx. 6.45pm after 5 hours’ travelling we were pretty disappointed to be told that if we expected to eat we must do so ‘immediately’. We were then told that food is served at 6.30pm only. We stated that we usually eat around 8pm so this was not suitable, upon which we were told ‘Well there are plenty of places to eat in Tavistock’. Easier said than done – everywhere required booking in advance due to Covid-19. The proprietor, Jeremy, later stated that he did not wish to cook later in the evening as too much cleaning up was involved and ‘it takes me 3 hours as it is’. Therefore, we ended up having to hurriedly try and book places to eat for the next few days, which involved driving to the nearest town, or further, every evening to eat. Our original plan to go out and explore during the days and then return to the accommodation in the evenings to enjoy dinner and a cosy evening in with a bottle of wine was unfortunately not to be.

I think this accommodation is appropriate if you are 75+ and are easily pleased. The other guests that we saw staying here were definitely in this age group. Thankfully, our days out were amazing - we visited some beautiful places along the coast, met some lovely people……and we did sleep well at night.

Disappointing

My husband and I recently spent four nights at Harvest Home.  We picked it at random from the internet.  I don't believe we could have had a more enjoyable or comfortable stay anywhere else, I consider that a massive stroke of luck.  It was perfectly located for our exploration of Dartmoor.  Jeremy and Tracey are wonderful hosts, with a wealth of knowledge about the area, and interesting facts about all sorts of things, wonderful company.  The food was as good as, if not better than, any top London restaurant, in fact we never ate out whilst we were there, good food, good company, good wine and just a stairway to bed, why go elsewhere?  Our room, the Junior Suite with Terrace, was enormous, the bed comfortable and warm, the bathroom well appointed and everything was spotlessly clean.  Everything we needed was provided, comfortable leather settee and chair, table and chairs for poring over the maps that were provided, we even had our own outside space with a bench and seats. Incredible value for money.  We would visit again just to see Tracey and Jeremy!

The Best Little Guest House in Devon

Lovely welcome from Tracey and Jeremy. The rooms were very spacious. We had a great meal in the evening, cooked to perfection. The breakfast was brilliant. We were helped to the car park with our luggage - brilliant service.

Great rooms and good hospitality

We stayed in the Brerton Room for two nights last week.
The room was very large, extremely clean, and we had one of the best night's sleep away from home for a long time.
The hosts were delightful, very pleasant and friendly. 
The breakfast was well cooked and plentiful, couldn't fault it.
There was also on-site parking, which was very useful.
All in all, easy to find and good value for money.
Would definitely recommend.

Wonderful stay !!!!!

We were directed to this b & b by friends for a nearby wedding. We stayed two days in an extremely comfortable and rather large room with great views on two sides of the nearby moor. Friday evening dinner was good, with well cooked vegetables. Breakfasts were substantial and tasty with choices of fruit juice and cereal as well as the cooked option. Very nice pot of coffee. The only shame is that its previous existence as a pub has lapsed, so it had somewhat of a lack of atmosphere in the common area - having said that, the hosts were very welcoming and friendly and full of local knowledge. Recommended for a getaway weekend and a good night's sleep; the bed was very comfortable

Well located for a weekend break

What a terrific place friendly hosts in Jeremy and Tracey. Huge and spotlessly clean bedroom suite with fabulous panoramic views over farmland and Dartmoor and a private garden to sit outside and enjoy the beauty of the area.
At night a superbly comfortable bed.
Then there's the food all home cooked, plentiful,and delicious served in the delightful and cosy private hotel bar and restaurant with a great selection of drinks.
It's situation is close to the ancient stannery and market town of Tavistock but an ideal base to explore many National trust properties, Dartmoor, Plymouth and Bude.
An absolute find so sorry that we only stayed one night but we are excited to return.

Sing a song of Harvest Home

Only some 5 minutes drive away from Tavistock, the Harvest Home is in a beautiful rural location, with Cotehele House and Gardens less than 6 miles away. I was in the garden Room, which was very spacious and with access to a small enclosed garden area with picnic table. 
The Harvest Home is on a bend in the road, so care should be taken on arrival and departure. Good parking is available, but it could be a little tricky to access for larger vehicles.
I was made to feel very welcome and treated to a delicious full English breakfast.
The bed was very comfortable and the rooms were kept very clean.
A well-recommended place to stay.

Excellent rooms. Great breakfast.

Very friendly welcome despite the late arrival. The room was very clean and our bathroom was quite large. Breakfast was freshly cooked in the morning. The hotel is quite quietly located about five minutes from travistock and is therefore also on the edge of the dartmoor
