We stayed here for a night as we were attending a wedding at Southdowns Manor a 3 minute drive away. We had to be at the wedding at the time that check in opened at 4pm, but snuck away before the evening reception, arriving at the inn at 7.20 only to find it completely shut up and with (seemingly) no one about. We called the number supplied through booking.com to be told that it should be open and there should be staff there but that they’d call us back. Clock-watching, knowing the first dance was at 7.45, I rung the door bell again a couple of times and a couple of minutes later a door banged inside and a guy came rushing to the door, opened it and in an accusing tone gruffed “I was expecting you hours ago”, we explained that we were at a wedding and got here as quickly as we could to which he quite mockingly said “well I wasn’t told that”. Bear in mind that we hadn’t had a call from them either. Anyway, another lady of staff popped up and offered to show us to our room. We tried to decline, explaining that we had to get back, but she insisted so we dully followed her up the stairs, saw where the room was, poked our heads in and then got back in the car as quickly as possible to head back. 

Once we arrived back in the later evening and were settling into our room it was clear that the attention to detail was definitely lacking. There was no soap for the basin, and in fact the only miniature toiletries available were three bottles of conditioner, one bottle of shampoo, and another brand of 2in1 shampoo and conditioner. No shower gel either so we resorted to washing our hands and bodies with the shampoo. The bathroom also wasn’t the cleanest, with hairs that weren’t ours around the basin and  on the shower wall which was a bit gross. 

The bedroom itself was generally clean although I admit that I didn’t inspect it too closely. The room is spacious and has a lovely outlook onto the pub garden. I would say however that the bed is very noisy and not the most comfortable and every toss and turn was creaky and could be felt by both of us. I would also recommend bringing an eye-mask as there is a very bright green light above the emergency exit which may be distracting if sensitive to these things. 

Breakfast was great; we had the full English and it was cooked fresh and a lovely portion size. I did have to ask for a fresh mug however as the first one supplied was visibly dirty. 

Upon checking out I mentioned the issues and highlighted the lack of soap in the bathroom only to be told “yes, they’ve stopped supplying soap”. So clearly they are aware of the issue. The card machine pin pad was also very sticky so make sure to bring wet wipes to wash your hands given there’s no soap…

Don’t expect a warm welcome or soap

Paul was a great host and his food was fantastic, the pub was great with a lovely atmosphere. There were a few issues however with the room, stained mattress and duvet cover, badly stained towels, which we didn't feel we could even use.
Mould on bottom of shower screen, rusty chipped enamel in bath, hot tap was only luke warm and loose cold tap on basin which lacked any water pressure. Could do with thicker curtains to block light and only two coat hangers.
We appreciate he has only just taken over and did bring up these points with him but we feel this is some serious issues which need sorting before we would stay again.

Stop Over En Route

My husband and I had a lovely home cooked meal. There was plenty of food and a menu that you can understand. 

We ordered from the specials and my husbands chicken curry was deliciously served with a side of mango chutney, papadum with rice.

I ordered hunters chichen which was a large portion and delicious.

After previously visiting another establishment where I struggled to find any chicken for the bone, I was very pleased to find a generous portion of chicken breast wrapped in bacon, bbq sauce and topped with melted cheese.  

In short, we would thoroughly recommend Elsted arms as a friendly and welcoming venue serving food that will not disappoint.

Lovely home cooked meal

We booked a room here because of the close proximity to a wedding venue we were attending.  Two days before I phoned to see if we could pick up a key slightly early , otherwise we would  arrive particularly late after the wedding.  The young girl I spoke to said she would speak to the owners and get back to me. No response!  The day before I managed to speak to the owner who said there wouldn't be a problem. The day of the wedding we arrive at the Elsted Inn all togged up in our finest to be told, sorry you've been double booked. Somebody should of informed us apparently!  It didn't occur to anyone to mention it when I phoned the two previous days. So I'm afraid I can't comment on the room etc. So should you wish to stay at this venue with a joke outfit, the risk is yours.

What room?

Difficult review to make as this is basic pub accommodation at a reasonable price. However it lacks any charm - young bar staff who didn’t their beers or the local area but thrust the payment machine at me before even showing us our room. (We’d paid the deposit already so hardly going to do a runner!)
Basic accommodation although a yellow throw on each bed made the room very cheerful. Sadly  the mattress was the most uncomfortable I’ve slept on in years.  Nowhere for the soap and shampoo in the shower; no hook for the hand towel; no chairs. 
Covid has greatly affected the hospitality sector and there  was no chef and thus no food for 2 nights. However we were very discomforted to arrive back on Sunday evening to find pub in darkness and locked! No warning at all. We were the only couple staying there, which was a bit spooky, until later on when the upstairs couple came back.
Top tip - do not book room 4 (ground) as thought we had a herd of wilde beest above us both mornings/nights.
The rooms look onto the beer garden so we were in fact lucky not to have lots of people drinking as would have been very noisy. 
I think the owners should spend a night in each room and get a feel of a punter’s experience. We did have a good breakfast, which was cooked by the owner, who was very pleasant but maybe too much time is spent at the other pub.

Basic but cheerful

The inn has recently changed management and needs some tlc but was a pleasant place to stay in deepest Sussex. Restaurant menu was basic but is due to be updated soon. Breakfasts were massive and freshly cooked, the wifi was good and there is a nice garden. The bedroom was fine and quiet with a modern bathroom, which could do with a shelf in the shower for shampoo etc.
The pub atmosphere is better when the guest rooms are full as there is little catchment area nearby and there seemed not a lot of local trade. It would also benefit from the landlord spending more time there but he has other pubs to look after. 
My usual test after going somewhere is would I go there again? Yes, I would.

Country pub stay

Our room was tidy and clean sheets and towels but very basic rooms could do with a bit of TLC but did the job. The breakfast was good and staff staff are friendly. New owners just started trying to get on top of things.

Basic that’s okay

This was our second stay at The Elsted Inn, which we used as a break in our journey from Dorset  to our home in Brighton. We were given room 4 which provided us with cosy and roomy sleeping accommodation and spacious bathroom overlooking the Inn's garden. The staff were friendly, polite and respectful. Otto the Inn's dog also very friendly. The food was quite exceptional. A must for a return. We were hesitant to post this review since we do not wish it to become so popular that we are unable to re-book. See you again soon Sandy & Graham Preston.

West Sussex hidden gem

This s my second review of the Elated Inn. This time we spent a night here and enjoyed a most cosy and relaxing stay. Room 3 is charming situated in a former brewery it has lots of quaint features a balcony which would a lovely place to watch the sun go down in summer as it has distant views of the south downs. If you're a town dweller you'll really appreciate waking to bird song instead of traffic noise. Had a fantastic meal yesterday evening and look forward to breakfast!  The atmosphere in the inn is just right. Somehow they have managed to create a successful mix of locals' watering hole and high class dining. Even strangers feel at home here. Thank you for a relaxing evening.

A night in the country
