An absolutely lovely pub in a lovely area of the country, the food was really lovely and very classical. The service was perfect, the lines are obviously in good condition as the beer was really crisp and tasty. Great pub. 

Top pub

We had a family Christmas Eve lunch and being regulars we are used to the service standard, food quality and atmosphere. For a Christmas Eve lunch it was shockingly bad. The couple of wait staff were absolutely miserable. It seemed like it was just too much effort for them and we had to keep asking for things. 
The food was average at best, 3 roast beef and a pasta dish so not like we all had the same thing. Such a shame as the standard had gone up when this place was taken over. Seems the enthusiasm has gone from both staff attitude and the food quality. Such a shame.

Poor Christmas Eve lunch

Disliked:   The accommodation area looked run down. The stairs carpet was thread bare. The carpet in the landing had large bleach stains on it. The room itself had marks on the walls. The bathroom had mould on the ceiling, dirty grout between tiles and paint peeling off the ceiling. The window catch in the bedroom was missing. The blinds were damaged and looked untidy. Staff had to be asked for extra drink packets and toilet rolls. Went to make a drink in our room and the milk was set! We stayed 3 nights and the room was never cleaned, tidied or stocked up. There were even clothing labels still on a shelf that a previous guest had left there. Breakfast was edible but only allowed to chose one. ( couldn’t have fruit, and a cooked breakfast)  Wasn’t asked by any staff if everything was ok. It was as if they avoided this because they knew standards were poor.

Very disappointed stay. Over priced and accommodation needs updating.

stayed here for 3 nights with friends rooms were comfortable we ate here on the Saturday evening and had the Sunday roast both meals were very nice and a very good selection for breakfast with a bus stop outside the pub was a bonus also as saved us all driving a paying for parking in Winchester especially with the xmas market on

Thoroughly enjoyed our two nights stay with our dog, while celebrating a family's birthday, in Sparsholt, location was brilliant, we enjoyed  exploring this very pretty village with our dog each morning.
Lovely warm friendly pub, our room was very comfortable, decorated nicely, with a lovely comfy bed, all amenities included, couldn't ask for any more, quite & relaxing.
Full English Breakfast was amazing, mushrooms were gorgeous, thank you chef, staff were helpful very friendly.
Best dog friendly  accommodation we have stayed in, definitely coming back.

Brilliant stay

Since there has been a change in management team, Mark has proved exemplary, transforming the quality of service and food, this change has been really recognisable and his team and himself should be congratulated. This has made a positive impact on the atmosphere with it beginning to feel like a bussing local once again. This has been a long time coming! Well done Mark!

Excellent service and consistently good food

Stayed here for a relaxing weekend, close enough to Winchester to enjoy it.  Lovely welcome and tasty food.  Plenty of car parking.  Pub is very popular so was lovely to be able to go and have a drink and a meal and then head up to room afterwards

Relaxing stay

Everything is there for a lovely pub stay - pretty countryside location, lovely pub with a great atmosphere and clearly liked by the locals but we were disappointed - suite we had booked wasn't cleaned before we arrived, food wasn't freshly cooked... hopefully management changes in the new year will address these

Sadly Disappointing


In the past this place was amazing, but over the years has become a roller coaster of good and average food,
However, the other two venues we wanted to book Xmas Day lunch at were fully booked, so we ended up at The Kings Head. 
Firstly the soup and nibbles were delicious, and the coffee was very good too, but sadly the rest of the meal was very underwhelming.
My starter of artichoke came out semi cold and sitting on soggy toast, as if it had been sitting around for a while before being served. I did notice a larger table next to ours send theirs back, so not sure if for the same reason?
The main dish of turkey for both of us was again not very hot, and the roast potatoes were really dry and bland. It felt like the whole meal had been warmed up rather than prepared freshly.
We absolutely love roast potatoes, and have been known to ask for more with a Xmas dinner. However, as they were so bland, we didn’t even finish them all. ( We are not even sure if they were proper roast potatoes?  more like the frozen ones you heat up in the oven ),
The Turkey and vegetables again were flavourless and warm at best.
The crackers on the table, were tiny with very cheap inserts.
If this was any other meal, we probably would just put it down to a bad experience, but when we are paying £160 plus drinks ( for two ) it leaves a very bad taste in our mouths.
We did feel very underwhelmed by the whole experience, which was meant to be a special occasion on Xmas Day.
We felt uncomfortable complaining on the day, so have since sent two seperate emails. Neither has been responded to. 
In these times of rising costs and people eating out less, a bad meal ( even more-so a Xmas day one ) is very disappointing.
We won’t be returning. 

 Xmas Day lunch let down.

A wealth of character with every modern comfort, a warm fireplace and comfy nooks in which to settle, a modern bedroom with all amenities and toasty warmth. Relaxed inviting dining room to enjoy delicious dinner and wholesome breakfast, everything overseen by Martin, duty manager who really cares.
