Just returned from a 2 night stay at the grey walls and the only good thing I can say is that the view from the window was beautiful. All communal areas of the hotel were filthy and the roof was leaking in on the staircase to our room. There was no one on site to complain following check in. The pub was closed on site a fact not mentioned when we booked. The wallpaper in the room was peeling off, the shower was completely inadequate, tea and coffee were not replenished, the towels were not changed and the rooms were not cleaned all the time we stayed. If you want to stay in a reasonably priced friendly clean hotel, this is not the place to say. Avoid at all cost.

Horrific

First off, reading other reviews (especially the not so positive ones) we did agree with some of the cons.

Here's what we found...

Jad, the hostess, was very kind and attentive. She answered the phone and helped us with our queries, even coming to loan us a hairdryer. 

Pros - clean room, bathroom was clean, sufficient hot water, tea facilities and TV was working, right next to Windermere St and restaurants, bars etc, heating worked in bedroom

Cons - no WIFI, carpet could do with a deep clean. 

For what we paid for 3 nights, I was happy with our stay. It was basic, but considering we really only needed the room to sleep (we were out super early and back late) it served its purpose. 

Would we stay here again? Yes. 

Basic and clean 

Please avoid this “hotel”. The room as soon as we entered felt damp and foisty. The wallpaper is peeling in places and there are speckles of damp all around the room and en suite. The shower is unsightly and the grout on the tiles is covered in black and orange coloured gunk that accumulates over time when you don’t clean it correctly. The radiator in the room worked however the one in bathroom didn’t. After I forced myself to take a shower I got out to realise that it leaks from the corner near the sink - a possible explanation for the build up of black damp.

I have read other reviews regarding tv not working and WiFi not working but these aren’t things we necessarily needed so we booked anyway. Having said this, we did expect it to be at least clean - which it wasn’t. I went to plug my phone in the double socket behind the bed where the lamp is plugged in and I was astonished to see that it looks like the bed hasn’t been moved or cleaned in the last 10 years. 

The mattress just sunk when you sat or laid on it showing it, or the bed, has probably had its day. It was the most uncomfortable nights sleep I’ve ever had of any hotel, guesthouse or hostel I’ve ever stayed in. This wasn’t helped by the thin nature of the walls meaning I could hear the snoring coming from the next room  

The nature of the stay really affected the weekend I had booked for my girlfriends birthday which we couldn’t celebrate in lockdown. I understand things may not be the same as before lockdown but the room fell way below what we expected. 

I emailed this place with my feedback and for an explanation and have received no reply and it’s been 3 weeks. Not sure how trading standards haven’t shut it down yet. Utterly appalling.

DO NOT BOOK HERE

Diabolical. The place is closed. You arrive to a piece of paper stuck to the door advising to ring a mobile. This was quickly answered where we were given the entry code and told “due to COVID” they were limiting contact?? Our room was on first floor but if your expecting a room that looks like the pictures, think again. The whole place needs revamping. The window was broken to what could have been a beautiful bay window and we could hardly block the disgusting view on the ground floor because the curtains would not pull on the rail. There are no other facilities open in this hotel if you can call it that. If there are no vacancies anywhere else either go home or don’t book here. Not what we expected! Very disappointed. 

The Shining !

As a bed for the night it serves a purpose. The price was low, the location is good, the room was clean, the water was hot and the bed was comfortable. However, there is no wifi in the bedrooms and the tv power cuts out all the time and after the bar staff have left it doesn't come back on at all......so bring a book!

Cheap and cheerfull

We booked a two night break here. Chose it for convenience. Close to station and town. Bar, restaurant and entertainment?? We arrived Tuesday evening to find place close both bar and restaurant, met by Dave bar manager who let us in. Said our rooms we top floor they were cold so he had put heaters in them. Told him we could climb the stairs being in our late seventies and early eighties. We had confirmation of two ground floor room. Said he would ring housekeeper to try and get other rooms. Stated owners had gone on holiday. So he sent us to pub across the road, eventually came to tell us, rooms ready one ground floor and one first floor. Had to accept them, asked about breakfast not doing it. Next day pub open but again restaurant shut. This is not what we booked. Tea, coffee and milk not replenish only three tea bags on arrival. First morning on going to go out to breakfast housekeeper came in with a very large dog. It jumped up with paws on shoulders of our friend who is really afraid of dogs. Again following morning he was taking case down stairs, dog bounded at him almost knocking him down stairs. It seemed to go round all bedrooms with housekeeper. It was worse experience we have ever had and definitely not what our booking.com confirmation stated. Definitely won’t return

Totally miss sold

Stayed in room 10 (top floor) which was a bit of an adventure to get there,bit of an issue with the door lock.
Room was basic,small bathroom..electric heater in corner which eventualy heated a cold room.
Didnt have breakfast but friends who did said it was nice.
Bar downstairs was nice,ran by a pleasant guy,food looked decent enough.
Would i stay here again,yes in a different easier to find lower floored room.

Standard hotel

We stayed for 1 night as it was dog friendly. Room was clean and tidy but could have done with a new carpet which was worn in places. Good location and parking on site. It seemed like the room had been decorated if they fixed the tear in wallpaper and the carpet would be much better.

Ok- good location

We stayed here on the 1.1.20 and it was nightmare.  
We were woken up three times twice by the police looking for someone called Warren, and then once by the manager apologising for the inconvenience.  

Normally this would not bother us but being woken up at 01.00, 02.00, 03.00 is terrible.

Never go to this hotel.

Never Stay Here

A friendly and helpful place very welcoming and stayed for dinner lovely homemade steak and ale pudding thought could have had more veg and potatoes even tho menu says steak and ale pie with chips seating area was a little cold away from the warm cosy area with a fire overall nice food
