I booked 2 of my managers to stay at this hotel as recommended by a local business and after visiting this hotel last year.

Oh my!  I wasn't prepared for the flurry of photographs of their stay - I was mortified and wanted to put it right as soon as I could.

I called the hotel first thing the next day and explained the photos I had seen and what had happened the night before.  I even sent the photos to them via email so they could view the evidence.

I was told the rooms were "spotless".  They were not!  I had photographs proving that they were "awful".  Filthy and dirty.

I went on to say that they stayed in the very hotel last year - What had happened?  I gave her honest feedback and said that they needed to sort things out - That everyone had a bad day but I felt that bringing this to her attention, I was giving her a chance to get it all sorted.

She offered a refund there and then to go back onto my card.  Although, as I paid via Hotels.com she wasn't able to refund onto the card I had paid with as it was American Express and they didn't accept payments on this type of card.  I was offered a refund via cheque in the post - This never arrived.  I chased many times and on my last attempt, said I would be posting the photos on here for all to see.  Still no reply or refund after 2 months (hence my delayed review).

I would avoid staying at this hotel.

Disgusting - Don't bother

I sympathise so much with Doris1701. Friends & I used to use this pub regularly because it's the most beautiful setting on a bright day. Now I'd have to be desperate, & that only when the owner was on a night off. I would have given only one star but for the setting & fact that it's used as a venue for a lot of groups to meet in their own space, which is so unusual it needs to be credited & thanked. Plus I arranged some food once for a few people getting together there & it was quite nice (although there was a bit of a disagreement as to whether I'd ordered all vegetarian or not). I also had a good lunch at someone's birthday celebration in the nicely special space of the conservatory a couple of years ago.

Unfortunately however it's common now that the owner seems to relish being rude, be you male or female. I've known him not bother to look up, just said "Goodnight" buried in his paper when I've gone to the bar to get another drink. When I was indeed leaving with a friend he did the same again. I spoke to him once about the newspapers (for which I'm saying thanks) & he used gross language about the editors of one respected paper. Loudly as well.

On a Saturday this summer my partner rang on his way cycling back from the shops & said he was going there for a drink so I said I'd head there too. Before I could get downstairs my partner was coming in the door & I joked had he been thrown out. He said the landlord had come up to him & asked "Are you going outside?" & when my partner said no the landlord said in a very blunt & unpleasant fashion "Well then take your hat off". My partner said sorry, drank up & left, to sympathetic looks from the guests at the bar. My partner has a bump on his head & wears the cap to hide it - it needs surgical removal. It's the landlord's space & if he wants to bar people in hats that's up to him of course, but you don't have to be rude about it & he could have asked politely which would be fine. There is no excuse for being rude, in fact boorish, and perhaps it might be as well to remember that some people wear headgear after cancer treatment when they've lost their hair.

I'm sorry to lose a nice place which I used to consider our local and I assume it's embarrassing for his wife/partner as well. Great pity & when I mentioned it to another regular at meetings there he said he was finding himself in unpleasant or awkward situations there as too.

Owner regularly rude & even boorish.

Have had two family functions here. First was may 2014. Very nice, catering portions weren't great but we put that down to us having a lot of people. But no big problems, so we felt comfortable to book a similar family function in July2017. Though the decor looks like the hotel that time forgot, the garden, car parking and location makes it favourable. The day we had our function I was hesitant anyway as when I arrived a day previously one of the staff was very rude about me bringing the cake and balloons, telling me they had nowhere to store it. I asked the manager, who arrived just as I was about to leave, who was fine and seemed very happy to take my balloons and cake for the next day to be displayed. Food portions were awful, when we asked when more was being bought out, the manager came through and did a head count an hour after food had been served saying we had payed for 55, yet 75 were there. Twenty of These were children under the age of 3 and a lot of our guests had arrived after the food was served, therefore his head count was irrelevant and rude. 
When I asked if they could cut the cake for us so I could pass it around, I waited half an hour. I asked again and they then told me to cut the cake myself. We had paid to have our function "not at home" so we wouldn't have to worry about catering, cake cutting and just have a nice time. I ended up having to use an empty plate from the buffet, covering it in napkins and eventually got a knife from the staff in the kitchen. To add insult to injury as I turned around i clocked the manger nibbling at the buffet food at this point.
The final straw has been today, when collecting some sun glasses that a guest had left behind on the day. We called the day after our function and a pair of glasses ha: been kept behind the bar matching our guests glasses description. It took a while to be able to collect them so after a month we went in there to pick them up, to be told the glasses had gone missing. We left our number and said if they turn up we will come in to collect them on passing. We were called two days later, and they had re-appeared. I have been in today to be shown a fake, plastic, cheap similar version of our guests sunglasses. It appears because we took so long to collect the glasses that somebody saw an opportunity but when realising we were coming in to collect them tried to cover their foot steps. Badly! When I was in the lobby today with the manager, I was totally snubbed by him when I said it wasn't our guests pair. No apology, he just went on to speak to their caterer behind me and dismissed me completely. I wouldn't usually write a bad review but I feel these owners are completely letting what could be an absolute gem of a building, down! 

Awful

The bedding and towels were clean but that was the only positive.  The bathroom could have done with a good clean - paintwork filthy - and the soap dish hadn't been cleaned. The lock on the bathroom door was faulty and my husband had trouble getting out!  The breakfast was ok, although the menu card was filthy, and everything was sticking to the table surface.  Not an experience to be repeated.

Glad we were only staying one night

Carpet hadn't seen a hoover in weeks, and the bathroom was caked in limescale, including pubic hair in sink! I asked for something to clean the sink with as I could not have washed my face in it and he feigned surprise and annoyance with his staff. For a room to get so neglected the "young summer staff" clearly weren't being trained, supervised, or motivated. The landlord followed me to our door (even though I had asked him to wait ten mins till we left) with a pitiful handful of kitchen roll and a spray. We asked him to let us get changed first, he gave a nod of contempt and needless to say no one returned to clean. We discovered later that two other guests had also had to ask for their entire room to be cleaned! Perfect example of Britain putting up with substandard overpriced rubbish.
