Stayed at The Helyar Arms over the Easter weekend. The location/setting is lovely and quiet with nice countryside views. There is a large car park to the rear, although if you go out and return mid-afternoon, it does fill up. However, there is ample parking on the nearby street.
We had lunch before checking into our room.
The restaurant area is set out very well and it's very clean with nice decor.
We had a Panini for lunch, they were lovely and fresh and tasty.
When we checked into our room, we found it to be spotlessly clean and very bright. It was a front facing room, which had lovely views up the village street.
We did find the walkway to the window side of the bed very tight. You had to shuffle sideways to get in. Also, when getting changed of an evening, we felt the room was quite cramped. 
The pillows on the bed were far too soft for our liking, I think this is the only place I have stayed in that use feather pillows!
There was plenty of tea, coffee, and biscuits on the hospitality tray in the room along with bottled water. It would have been nice to have a couple of hot chocolate sachets there, too!
The housekeeping throughout the building was very good, and all the staff were friendly, helpful, and efficient.
All the food we received was good and cooked well, we do, however,  have to question value for money where the steaks are concerned.  The Ribeye steak was cooked to perfection, but all you got with it was a couple of scoops of gratin potatoes and some mixed leaves and peppers! For £27 I would have expected a portobello mushroom,  grilled tomato, and onion rings as well.
There were only 2 options of draft ale, and they were both amber beers, Otter and Butcombe. It would have been nice to have the option of a lighter Ale on draft.
For an establishment with only a handful of rooms, at no point did the owners/managers introduce themselves to their paying guests. They seem to spend more time with the locals. It feels that their emphasis is more on the pub/food side of things rather than the B&B side of the business.

Although I have pointed out a few negative points, the positives far outweigh them, and we would definitely stay there again.

Pleasant Easter Break

A lovely location and great looking pub. Sadly the food did not live up to the promise.  In particular the pizza resembled a supermarket pizza - soggy with far too much tomato and cheese.  There was supposed to be Duck and Spring onion but all I saw was a few small cubes of strange meat and small circles of green - no flavour except the overpowering cheese end tomato. Even the drizzle Hoisin couldn't save it.   I can do better at home.  The other meals were pretty average - which for the price (£13 each for pub grub) is unacceptable. Also average bottle of wine was £23.50!  Didn't complain because we were with my elderly mother and she had said the recommendations locally were good. But when we got home she apologised!

Our family booked 4 rooms at The Helyer Arms and it was a wonderful stay. The pub is very beautiful and very cosy. The rooms were comfortable considering there is a pub downstairs the rooms are quiet, The food was outstanding the staff went above and beyond for us. We are already planning our trip back! I brought my dog with me and i was very please to see a dog bin outside and so many dog bowls plotted around there must have been at least 6 outside where the seating area is and some inside around the pub.

Wonderful stay and very dog friendly !

I visited this restaurant last Sunday for lunch with my cousin and her husband who live in the village.  It was quite honestly the best lunch I have had in a long time.  My cousins had the lamb and I had the chicken.  Both were superbly cooked and presented and not huge as in many other places.  As a result, I was able to finish it all and have the wonderful ice-cream desert to follow.  The meat and the ice-cream are sourced locally, which, to my mind, makes a lot a difference to the quality.   The staff were very friendly, efficient and we were not kept waiting.  The cook is clearly top notch. I will certainly want to visit this place the next time I am up and I cannot wait.  Indeed, my cousins are regular diners here and can't praise it enough.

Ignore the poor reviews in my opinion there is nothing they could do to improve on what they are doing . It’s a lovely cosy pub in a very nice village

A must visit

Been coming here since I was young, 40s now. Lovely place inside with a lovely relaxing area, the apple loft with sofas. The beer garden is probably the best kept I've experienced, however; the beer is awful. Its like no one in the pub understands what beer / ale to keep and how to keep it. I'm currently sat in the pub with an ice cold pint of Otter! It shouldn't be cold. It's got no body, it's awful and the other option is even worse, a Butocmbe which is like dishwater. Why don't they care about the beer?! You have no idea of the people like us who dodge the place simply because the beer is sub standard. Reason for 3 stars?. The staff are so so good and well presented, always. 

Poor Beer, good staff 

This is an old building and hence a little quirky, but that largely adds to its charm.  The room was rather tired, but generally clean albeit the loo could have done with some limescale remover, and not unreasonable at the price.  I expect a bit of noise in the room when you're staying above a pub, but knowing we wouldn't arrive until nearly midnight I did not think this would be an issue.  However, the staff left the music on loud in the bar when they locked up and went home and, having been unable to find anyone to deal with it, we spent all night until they arrived again for the morning shift being kept awake.  To make things worse the staff were very matter of fact about it in the morning with a response that it shouldn't have happened rather than suitable apologies to reflect the fact that we had paid for a quiet night's rest and had almost none.    The landlord didn't seem in a very good mood in the morning when we came to settle the bill, with his staff confused and getting little help.
I do want to say on a positive note that the breakfast was better than expected, but I go to a pub/hotel to sleep and for that reason we will not be staying there again!

No sleep due to bar noise which lasted all night!

If you have the misfortune to stay at the Helyar Arms, make sure you don’t stay in the room called “Furzy Knapp” (the family room at the top of the stairs on the left). It is crying out for a visit from the Hotel Inspector, and merely watching a few episodes of that would have rectified most of the issues with the room. Where to start? The wooden bed is horribly squeaky and it was filthy underneath - the bed is so huge and heavy it was obvious no one had vacuumed underneath it for a considerable while. I checked afterwards underneath to make sure I hadn’t left anything behind, and instantly wished I hadn’t. The small en-suite shower room smells of old nappies, and the inside of the loo is stained brown. The electric shower only works on Eco, which comes out in a dribble, but for this I was actually thankful as if you turn it to Main you get blasted with intermittent scalding hot or icy cold water without you adjusting anything. You can’t even adjust the angle of the shower head - that is broken too. Your best bet is to take it off and hold it, while the water trickles over you - at least like that the temperature stays constant . Even the kettle was full of limescale. Everything just seemed like it had seen better days.

We didn’t get a wink of sleep all night as the music had been left on in the bar underneath, with no means of contacting the owners to get it turned off. You could hear the main hotel number just ringing unanswered in the bar underneath when we tried to contact them. In sheer desperation we went out into the road at 5am to look round and see if there was anything to be done to stop the music, or any other information suggesting how we could contact the owner, but unfortunately to no avail. The Landlord didn’t appear to mind whether we had slept or not - all we wanted was a simple acknowledgement and someone to say “Oh dear, I’m so sorry”, to which we would have replied “Don’t worry, these things happen”, but there was such a frosty atmosphere the next morning. I couldn’t wait to leave, and only stayed for breakfast as I was giving another couple a lift back to their car later on. I was so frazzled by being in that noisy room with thumping music all night that I seriously considered going outside and sleeping in my car. Breakfast was the only redeeming feature of this place. The other rooms are hopefully better than our one, but I definitely would not recommend anyone stays in the family room we were in.

Never again!

Nothing is too much trouble, this is our 2nd stay while visiting family , a lovely welcome greets you and got a dog ..they are welcomed & spoilt.
Enjoy a meal in the restaurant and don’t worry if you have a problem it will be sorted, our carrots were decidedly crunchy but we asked if they could be replaced and within minute a fresh bowl arrived with a check to see if they were ok …. Have to mention the lime posset , sooo scrummy.
Breakfast is fabulous with yogurts & cereals to help yourself to , a fruit bowl waits on your table then the best way to serve cooked breakfast … you choose how you would like your eggs ( Claire’s scrambled eggs are to die for. ) then a platter arrives with sausages,bacon,mushrooms & tomato.
Toast arrives .. dog is very happy as this is his Sunday treat  … all washed down with juice and as much tea / coffee as you want. 

Your not a guest your family

Absolutely diabolically rude attitude from the landlord.  Myself and my daughter and family dog called in for lunch after a long walk and sat in the beer garden. We were rudely told to take the brolly down as it was too windy(a little wind/breezy) if we didn't and it caused damage we would be liable and also told our dog was unsuitable for the garden (he was on a lead attached to the bench) he just barked at him as he approached from behind. We used to come a lot but we will never return.
