DO NOT STAY HERE!! Very rude and aggressive manor. 
We booked, with the intention of staying here. We arrived late afternoon expecting the room we’d booked to be ready. After managing to park in the very tiny carpark we managed to attract the owners attention to go inside. We followed him to a room that was not ready, could hear what he was saying properly as the TV was blaring. It didn’t feel as if he was expecting us, despite booking and paying directly. 
He advised that a brother and sister had been allocated a twin room and they hadn’t wanted to share. He gave them the room we’d booked, trying to avoid an issue with them, causing us a problem instead. I’d paid for a king sized room, with a garden view. The twin room looked to be in a basement? The window appeared to have a wall a few inches away? I stated i understood his predicament but he then left US with a problem. He didn’t appear to care, said it was our choice if we wanted to stay or go and left us, whilst he carried on cleaning the room. 15 minutes or so later he came back to us. I stated there’d be no where else to stay at this time of night, could I access the wifi and could we have reduced cost, as it wasn’t what we booked? HE TOTALLY FLIPPED!! ! He said he was 80 and shouldn’t be dealing with stuff at his age and asked us to leave, not caring that I’d paid and had no where else to stay.

Aggressive, rude owner.

Stayed here on Saturday night along with 5 other friends. What a lovely place to stay , very friendly, very clean great breakfast served to us by a lovely lady who made sure we all got what we had ordered ,
When leaving on the Sunday 3 of us that had travelled by train were offered a lift to the station by Arthur , service above and beyond . 
I would not hesitate to stay here again when visiting York . Such a gem amongst the other usual hotels

A hidden gem

We booked this hotel for a Saturday night to meet up with friends.
Its in a good location with an easy 15 minute walk into York.
Room was very comfortable and good value and the breakfast was very good.
I must give a mention to the owner ,Arthur,who went out of his way to help us- I  have never experienced this sort of service before in a hotel. He dropped us off in York in the afternoon and when we returned he offered to drop us off in the evening too- he even picked us up when we were ready to return!

Great stay

Lovely weekend stay having booked a few rooms for our family and friends for our daughter's 30th party nearby.   Arthur was so accommodating and friendly to us all.  Nothing was too much bother even offering to drop people in town..   rooms were cosy and the breakfast was great.  Would definitely book again as regular visitors to York. Thank you Arthur and the staff at Clifton Bridge 👍

A lovely stay and a great location .. only a 15 min walk to the Minster 👍

Me and my friend stayed in a twin room during a weekend trip to York. The room was clean, tidy and had everything you need. The beds were super comfy!! The breakfast was nice with lots of options. Arthur and the staff were very welcoming and helpful in recommending places to go. Its location is great with only a 15 min walk to the city by the river which is lovely.
We would definitely stay here again!!

Lovely place to stay!

Nice hotel just off Clifton Green, a 15 minute walk outside the city walls. Oppsite a nice park and just a 15 minute walk from York sports club. decent rooms, very clean, got a great nights sleep. Great breakfast in a nice dining room was included and its superb value for a hotel in York. The owner, Arthur is friendly and welcoming, would certainly stay again if we were in the area for anything

Excellent Value in Quiet Area of York

Atrocious! Horrific smell in room, yellow stains on bath mat and pubic hairs on toilet seat, bowl and wall. Called and emailed owner to sort….he called us back at 6pm after 4 hours out in the room and we had to book other accommodation in case! Subsequently called me a liar when I had no reason to be and said he was satisfied with the cleaning standards! Ruined a rare weekend away and left us out of pocket.

Great "find"

It’s a nice quiet place, there was construction work going on outside but not the owners fault. 
It was close to the train station so we were able to walk from there to the guesthouse. 
We also were 20 min walk from the shops and main area. 
The bus stop is right around the corner, one of many so there are many to choose from.
The owner was nice, breakfast was great.

Very good!

I booked 5 rooms for a hen party. I emailed the owner in advance of my booking to confirm they accepted hen party bookings and was given the go ahead. I received an email a few days before arriving asking for names of all guests for each of the 5 rooms, which I duly completed. Due to an issue with card payment, I received a call from the owner the day before to make payment over the phone which was no problem. There was some confusion during the call about the number of rooms as he believed we had only booked 4 but I had booked 5 and completed the email as requested which said the same, but a quick check on the system confirmed 5 rooms so all corrected. I asked what time check in was and was told 2pm. We arrived at 1:50pm ish and were asked to wait in the dining area which was no problem as we were 10 minutes early. When we were taken to our rooms about 20 minutes later, the same issue happened - owner believed we had booked 4 rooms but it was 5, so we had to wait in the corridor whilst he went down again to check the booking system. Not a big deal, but a mild inconvenience considering I had completed the email confirmation the hotel sent me, and also confirmed over the phone the night before. However all sorted once again but 2 of the 5 rooms were not ready, which was disappointing considering we were checking in after the time I had been told, so really rooms should have been ready. Again, not the end of the world, as those without access to their own room could go into one of the others to wait, but still inconvenient. 

The rooms, once we had all of them, were clean enough, although definitely areas for improvement. Faeces on the toilet in one of them, a half drank bottle of water left on the bedside table in another, and panty hose from a previous guest in the bin of another room. However, beds were fresh and comfortable and alright for one night. Breakfast was nice and the lady serving was very friendly. The owner also agreed to take us into York as we couldn’t get a taxi which was very kind of him. 

The main reason for the low rating is that sadly the owner could be very rude and abrupt at times. We were a hen party group, yes, but the average age of our party was 44. We weren’t teenagers who would destroy the room, however we were told repeatedly not to put straighteners or tongs on the beds. Once gentle reminder wouldn’t have raised an eyebrow, but the owner stressed and stressed this as if we were all idiots, so I was nervous to even use my straighteners at all, even though I had them nowhere near the bed. Furthermore, I received a stern talking to from the owner at check in about drinking in the rooms. I was told we had to go downstairs if we wanted to drink, so I asked if we could take our own drink, and it honestly felt like I was being told off by the headmaster whilst I stood there dumbfounded and unsure what to say. My own father never spoke to me that way and the last thing I expected upon checking into a hotel that I’d paid £600 for, was to receive a lecture about how it was illegal to drink our own alcohol in the bar area. I honestly felt like I had been scolded like a naughty child just for asking a question. What was more frustrating was that the bar never appeared to be open the entire time we were there, so I found this very confusing. Several times during the tirade, I tried to end it by saying variations of ‘okay that’s fine, it was just a question’ only to be cut off and told ‘would you ask to take your drink into any other bar?’ I just found this rude and unnecessary when a simple ‘no, sorry, we don’t allow that’ would have sufficed. I have anxiety and depression and this was very upsetting to me. It made me not want to stay and have to be talked down by the other people in the group. Other people also had similar interactions with the owner, yet at other times he couldn’t have been nicer. We just didn’t know how he was going to react at any moment which created an uncomfortable atmosphere. We all got the sense he was uncomfortable with a hen party group but if that is the case then perhaps the hotel should consider not accepting such bookings rather than making guests feel unwelcome. 

Other than that beds were comfortable, breakfast was nice, and reasonable rate for a night. However, I would not stay again for the above reasons. I expect to feel comfortable in a hotel, not like I might get grounded.
