Note that this property is now a self-catering (the agent is Sykes Cottages). Beware as it falls significantly short of standards most people would expect for self catering.

General Cleanliness

This is a significant concern, especially at the present time.  This property was not at an acceptable level of cleanliness when we moved in at 3pm on Saturday 8th August.  There was a low level of cleanliness in virtually all areas of the house, but in particular surfaces such as the kitchen table, kitchen windows, oven, staircases and window ledges.  We needed to clean the kitchen windows as they were filthy.

Kitchen

Aside from the cleanliness of the kitchen (see above), the freezer had a drawer full of food, and the cupboard under the sink was dirty and untidy.  It is not well equipped for cooking or serving food: there are no serving dishes or bowls for things like salads/fruit, there is also no sieve, milk jug and limited glass tumblers.

Outside Space

This area is described on the website as “a small, enclosed rear patio with furniture”.  We have no issues with the size of it, however it is no more than a back yard for, at best, hanging out washing (which currently is not possible as there is no washing line).

It is, essentially, a bin storage area.  It contains the property’s two wheelie bins, next door’s two wheelie bins, and the oil tank from the pub.  It is also overlooked at close proximity by the smoking shed from the pub next door as well as the window from the pub kitchen.  Consequently it is unsightly, smelly, attracts flies, and has absolutely no privacy at all.  It is not a pleasant place to sit out and this should be made clear in the property details.  Also, the area had clearly not been swept for some time as the floor was covered in moss from the roof and other debris.

Bedrooms

The bedrooms lack several key items:

•	Bedside tables
•	Mattress protectors on all upper floor beds
•	Shelves/hanging space in most rooms

"Double beds" are 1.25m in width which is not wide enough to qualify as a standard double bed (1.35m), so they are very narrow and uncomfortable for two people.

The website also stated that on the top floor is “a hidden gem…cosy games room for the kids”.  This is a ridiculous description.  It is not a hidden gem at all, it is a tiny box room with a few old toys thrown into the corner.  There is no furniture at all in the room.

Bathrooms

There is no shelving in any bathrooms.  The downstairs shower is unsafe to use - the shower head is not properly fixed to the wall and drainage is extremely slow.

Self-Catering that Falls Short

The Old Post Office, is situated in a charming village with a lovely pub. The Old Post Office is a very cosy place to stay, with friendly owners.  They gave you idea of places to visit. Breakfast was wonderful everything you needed and the room clean and tidy with a very comfortable bed.

A Post Office with a difference

We stayed here for two nights and the bed was comfortable and clean. Towels were of decent quality and well laundered too. However a few details need to be addressed, we were given 3 tiny pots of milk on arrival but as the room was not serviced during our stay, no additional milk was provided. The ensuite extractor fan was very dirty and had not been cleaned for a long time. The light coloured carpets were marked and the room’s chair covers were stained. A shelf is needed in the shower room as there is nowhere to put toiletries. It is an old house with single glazed sash windows, which we had to wedge with paper to stop draughts and rattles. A simple draught stripping kit would resolve this issue. We would have scored this B and B a little higher had these minor irritations not occurred. The house is on the main road through the village and right next door to The Brown Cow pub where we had a good bar meal.

Two night stay here

Just come back from a night away. Stayed here due to the price been so good. Stayed in a room with a shared bathroom not something we'd normally opt for but was actually totally fine. The bed was super comfy and the place was lovely and quiet had a great nights sleep. Breakfast was great and very tasty. Was about half hour walk down into staithes passing 3 pubs on the way down if you fancied food or a beverage along the way. Staithes was a lovely picturesque village and we will definitely be going back we loved it. I would definitely stay here again

Great place

Booked for one night to attend a wedding nearby. Absolutely lovely little place. Young guy who checked me in quickly as was in a rush to wedding and literally took 3 minutes. You get a code for access if coming back late, lovely room felt like home. Didn't have time for breakfast but it smelled amazing. Would absolutely recommend and would stay again 100%. Thank you :)

Gorgeous

We stayed for one night after a fabulous day in Whitby, Dan the host is most hospitable and the beds were clean and we had a pretty good sleep. The bathroom however left a lot to desire cleanliness wise, and behind Tv was very dirty. 
It is £60 a night. Paintwork was a little tired, if these issues were addressed it would be a Lot better.
Breakfast is precooked so a little on the fence about that.
All in all it’s ok...I would have given 2 stars if Dan was not such a nice guy, if he addressed the small issues it would be better.

Great stay at the Old Post Office in Hinderwell, Dan the host was very helpful. Good breakfast, room clean, bed comfortable and good shower. Free, fast WiFi available. Friendly pub next door, dogs allowed inside and out. Only 15 min walk to Runswick Bay.
