We stayed for two nights at the Cockpit Cottage. I wasn't too sure what to expect based on mixed reviews I'd read. Don't believe the negative review! This is a little treasure with breath taking views and everything you need to have a relaxing break.
It's not been refurbished to a modern standard but I'm not sure who would really expect that coming to a Northern countryside town? It was so nice to come somewhere that didn't have Wifi as we could really unwind - If it got too much not being able to check for messages/calls/social media we just nipped into the local pub and connected to their wifi whilst enjoying a glass (or three!) of wine and a bit of scampi!
The views out of the bedroom and living room windows are AMAZING. You would pay extra abroad for such a seaview. The kitchen is functional with enough space to store any supplies you have brought for your trip. The water runs nice and hot so you can have a soak in the bath. 
Jennifer the owner was really nice and made sure that we had everything that we needed and then left us alone for the weekend which is exactly as I would expect. Incidentally the B&B is not open at the minute as she is unwell.

Quaint and cosy hideaway

Just for clarification:

a) It's not a cottage, it's a granny flat on the top left of the b&b house
b) It only had '...a modern bathroom' in the 70's
c) It doesn't have a shower (unlike most 'modern bathrooms'!?)

- It only has 1 double glazed window; because of this & the poorly fitting door, the cottage isn't warm & you can obviously hear the wind/sea a bit too much
- The 3 bar electric fire only has 1 bar working
- The furniture & decor are also from the '70's & a bit depressing
- The mattresses are very worn 
- Don't listen to her story that she wants cash as '...she is a bit ill at the moment so can't get to a bank...'; she could manage the steps up to the flat & walk around the village perfectly ably when we met her

On the positive side, the place was perfectly clean & has a lovely sea view from 2 windows in the dining/kitchen/front room, room & from the front bedroom

The B&B maybe good but don't bother with the 'cottage'.....

Just got back from this charming B&B/guest house, I found the Cockpit House when looking for a place to stay near Whitby. I can see myself coming back to this guest house as it reminds me of my second home Guernsey. It is very close toe the beach and we had a wonderful view of the sea (we could hear it too!) from our bedroom window. Jenny Smith, the hostess, is really lovely and nothing is too much trouble; to me it's like staying with your aunt or Nan, which felt really comforting and you could come in and out as you please. We had a tasty full English breakfast, cereal and toast which set us up for the long journey home. 
The rooms were clean and tidy and comes with tv, tea making facilities and there is free wi-fi. Be aware that there is no en-suite, but a bathroom/toilet between the three guest rooms. It states on the website that there is parking but there is space outside for a couple of cars (even though we were convinced or if you have a bug car, 
Sadly we came out of season so we couldn't eat in the nearest pubs for dinner, so we had to drive 10 mins away to eat. Even though we couldn't have any local ales as we were driving we did enjoy great pub grub in the Tiger Inn.

Shhh! its a secret

This is the first chance I've had to post a review of this charming B&B, as they have only recently gone online. I first came upon Cockpit House when staying in the village for a quiet break just after losing my wife in 2010. Every year since, I have returned - sometimes more than once. I'm hooked on the place which is ideally situated just behind the lifeboat station, so very close to the beach, in fact the only B&B at the bottom of the village. I can even hear the seawater lapping the beach from my room which has stunning views across the bay, as all the three rooms do.

Jenny Smith, the hostess, is really lovely and nothing is too much trouble; to me it's like home from home. Jenny provides a tasty full English breakfast which will set you up for the day. The rooms are spotless and come equipped with tv, tea making facilities and there is free wi-fi. Be aware that there is no en-suite, but a bathroom/toilet between the three guest rooms - perfectly adequate for my needs.  A comfortable residents' lounge is provided too. Well behaved dogs are permitted as long as they are not left in the rooms on their own.

There is space outside for a couple of cars, which is very useful in season as the nearby car park can be quite pricey if you want to hang around the seafront all day. In season there is also a lovely beach cafe nearby, which is handy for sandwiches and drinks etc during the day. If you really want to stay local in the evening, within crawling distance is The Royal which serves the usual pub fare during the season.

Cockpit House is  Runswick's best kept secret - so being utterly selfish; don't all flock there when I need one of my quiet breaks!!
