We have stayed here during the fall/winter for football games for many years because of the proximity to Auburn.  We see no point in paying $$$$ for a place to sleep.  The room rate is about $50.00 per night; for that rate we have never expected a 5-star accomodation.  We have NEVER had any safety concerns in all this time.  Our room has always been clean, with clean linens, etc on the beds.  This is an older hotel with central interior hallways (that can be rather dimly lit) and it has probably gone through several reincarnations.  The owners (who live on property) are in the process of updating the property a little at a time.  The owner is replacing  carpets, matresses, etc.  We always sleep extremely well.  
Note:  DON'T expect a "breakfast bar" or any elaborate breakfast set-up.  This is not a problem for us personally, we just have breakfast elsewhere.  However the coffee is very good.  This is a lake resort area and there are ample restaurants to choose from:  everything from Waffle House types to bistro and family style arrangements.  There is a brochure at the front desk provided by the Alex City Chamber of Commerce that lists eatery options in the area.  We were pleasantly surprised to find some rather good ones for a small town/rural area.  The non-local person would probably not know about these.  Auburn/Opelika is about a 30 minute drive as well and has other eatery options.

Return visit

We have been staying at this hotel for several years when we come to football games in Auburn.  Keep in mind that the room rate here is around $50,00 plus tax.  While it is true that it's not the Hilton, we have never been dissatsified with our stay.  We didn't expect a gourmet breakfast and a spa like atmosphere.  All we want is a clean place to sleep and shower and that's what we got.  We have observed that construction crews apparently stay here a lot, but we have never been frightened nor kept awake by undue noise.  If your objective is a no frills, clean place to stay the night there is really nothing wrong with the Royal Inn.  However, if you have children who want a pool to swim in or you want a place with more amenities, you will have to look elsewhere.

Sufficient For Our Needs

A couple of decades ago, this property was a Super 8, well maintained and very clean.  It changed hands and went downhill.  That was not a problem as Alex City had other motels being built and the competition lowered prices and improved the selection.  This past weekend, we decided to stay here based on the advertising special price.  I was concerned due to its recent past, but upon checking in, we were delighted with the changes the property is undergoing.  The carpet was clean, the bathroom sparkling, bed mattress was firm and the reception was friendly.  The room is dimly lit.  It could stay at least another lamp and the TV set requires an orientation by the owner, but since we didn't have time for TV, it did not matter.  Over all, this is the best deal for the money around Alexander City and we'll return.

Not clean carpet, poor lights in pool area, smells like dog pee, no one shovels snow, outdated food at breakfast, boogers on wall, no one answers the phone at the front desk, menu in room is outdated.

This hotel is old, poorly staffed, unprofessional and dirty! The toilet in our bathroom had a busted top. The shower was filthy so we didn’t use it. The room lacked the refrigerator and microwave as advertised. They brought a refrigerator to the room after I called and complained. There are no elevators in this hotel and our room was on the 3rd floor. We paid $86 for one night. It wasn’t worth $25. Avoid this hotel unless you’re just desperate. We had to stay because of two local sporting events and all other hotels were full.

Worst hotel experience of my life!!!

We passed through Alexander City on our way home from FL and wanted a cheap place to spend the night. The price of $50 sounded good. As the man at the front desk started telling me "how" to turn the shower on, I realized we made a mistake. It was late and my husband was tired, so with an open mind, we proceeded. We walked down a dungeon hallway to enter our room. The smell was atrocious and the dim lighting made it seem like a proper place for prostitutes. We were all in dismay. My husband and I tried to convince our teenage girls one night wouldn’t hurt but they were already scared. Our girls insisted they would not get under the blankets. They also would not change into pajamas or walk barefoot on the carpet. We tried to sleep but the thumping and running kept us wake. Many times during the night we heard screams coming from another area in the motel, we suspected the owners children. It was a little eerie.  Finally, after thrashing and tossing till 4am we decided to get up, count our losses and move on. This place was the worst I’ve seen but my husband, who traveled as a truck driver, said he‘s seen much worse. I guess you can take your chances.
