This isn't really a resort in this case. It's a free-standing cabin, which is good. 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms, also good. But rustic, few amenities, and no activities and no resort. Cabin is over 2 miles from the "office," which is actually a real estate office. Apparently handles other properties.
The cabin has what is described as supplies for "three days" and then you're on your own. Lots of check-in and (especially) check-out rules and penalties: fees if furniture is moved, for example, or dishes not cleaned, and in particular for trash not placed in the dumpster. BUT the dumpster is over 3 miles away.
Roads around the cabin are very poor at best. Mostly dirt roads with occasional pavement.
Angel Fire is a sad little retirement community pretending to be a ski resort. Residents are mostly older retirees, who don't really want improvements (like good roads).
Management seems non-existent.

Basic and Primitive

We took a last minute trip so basically grabbed what was available. We ended up with a 2 bedroom condo that slept 6. It was right by the shuttle drop off so it was easy to walk downstairs, grab our gear, and hop on. 
The unit itself had very comfortable beds, a fireplace, and a full kitchen.
The 3rd bed was a Murphy bed in the living room that housed the only TV. There was no watching TV from any bed, especially if that bed was in use. TVs in each bedroom would be nice. 
Bathrooms did smell a bit like weed, but there was hot water. Definitely space out showers or you wouldn't have hot water.

Reserved my condo through this place for my family ski trip this year.  About a month later they called me telling me the condo sold and offered me 3 other places to rent.  These 3 other places didn't exactly match the criteria I needed.  I just asked if they had another place that had at least 4 or 5 beds like the previous one I had rented.  No response, so I spent an hour and a half of my time combing through their properties AGAIN to find one that matched.  I asked if we could switch and provide a bit of a discount for the inconvenience of me having to waste my time again...Long story short, their best effort was to offer me another place was as good as it got.  When I said my review would reflect this inconvenience, she canceled my reservation.

TERRIBLE customer service! STAY AWAY!

The property has amazing views and the time there was nice. We saw eagles and even had a mountain lion visit the driveway. This log cabin is unique in a good way, but guests should be very aware that the master is open to the living area and the bathroom has no door, either, as well as there being windows that expose the shower to a direct line of sight to the neighbors. The hot tub was a delight, though it had not been cleaned for our arrival- which is very disappointing (and a little gross) considering the $250 fee. The kitchen is well outfitted with pots and such, but there was only one kitchen towel and the coffee filters were the wrong size (too small). As for the bedding, it was lacking with very cheap polyester sheets, bad pillows and a bed covering that I believe is 20 years old (based on magazine photos from when it was built). Attention to detail is really what was lacking at this property. Small upgrades (which they told me at check-out were going to happen AFTER we left) need to happen at this cabin. Also, you need to know that you are responsible for taking your trash to the dump in town. That is just not something you would expect from the price point of this property and its fees. Overall, we enjoyed our stay but it was not something we would rent again, especially since it cost more than $500/night when all said and done.

Angel Flight Cabin rental

As a person that tends to be froogle and conservative with their vacation plans, spending roughly $2,000 on a VRBO for what I would consider a splurge of luxury only to have that money taken, not returned, not rescheduled, and no services rendered really hits a person in the gut. Specifically when there is no hint of empathy to the issues preventing most people from traveling. 

Bear with me; this is a story that can be summarized but still won’t capture the tone correctly. Let me start by suggesting that you find a place to stay that is not being managed by Resort Properties of Angelfire, specifically the manager Amber Archuleta. I didn’t have the opportunity to stay at Angel Fire Resorts, so I cannot speak to their property itself. I can, however, share with you my experience with their management company and lack of care for their renters. From reading other reviews, this experience is typical for them. 

I messed up booking here because I booked it 60 days out and realized I double booked myself the next day. On day 59, I called to cancel. Their policy is that they won’t cancel within 60 days. That is where I messed up. I didn’t see their cancellation policy. After talking to the management company and being told flatly, no refund, no other solution was provided. After asking VRBO what we can do, we relayed the suggestion to the management company, and they reluctantly agreed to push our reservation to the summer (off-peak) but, of course, for peak pricing. We gladly accepted, even though the entire reason for going was to go skiing during spring break.

Summer comes, and the world is still amid a global pandemic (COVID-19). New Mexico has stated that any travelers from out of state must quarantine themselves for 14 days before they can do anything. In fact, they even shared the bad news with us. We called the property manager up and explained the issue with coming and not being allowed to enjoy the area. They suggested that we come regardless and not only risk the further spread of a pandemic but also break their state’s mandated orders. The management company clearly doesn’t think they should adhere to the state’s health orders, nor do they take it seriously. I even see this on another review left during the state’s health order. 

After pointing out that they are asking us to go against their state’s orders, I was told they would cancel the reservation and give us the credit we must use by March of 2021. This effectively cancelled the VRBO reservations, which didn’t allow us to leave a review on VRBO. We learned that VRBO asked all their hosts to allow guests to move or credit their reservations due to the unprecedented global pandemic. Luckily, the property management company accepted VRBO’s request/recommendation. 

Fast forward to February; with the State’s lifting of their mandated quarantine order for out-of-state visitors, we booked our stay. But again, nature had other plans. We live in Texas, and a winter storm, the likes of which haven’t been seen by the state since 1899, came and hit us. We could not make it to the cabin safely. The storm caused the president to declare a National Emergency; it was so bad. 

I called up the management company yet again and asked if there anything we can do? Can we move it, refund it….anything. They flatly said “no refund,” we can only cancel and keep your money. This, of course, would make anyone upset. With the potential pending damage about to hit my home and my finances to fix said home, I am upset. Because like millions of people in America’s shrinking middle class, I’m worried about money. Instead of working with me on allowing my money to provide a future reprieve from a stressful, pandemic then naturally declared disaster, they told us they are only “looking out for the property owner.”

It seems to conduct business this way is not looking out for the property owner but actively working against them. I have explained to multiple people in my life in-person and on various social media platforms to avoid this place. It isn’t worth the risk of losing your money here. 

That all said, they let me know if I was to leave a review; they have general policies on how to respond, implying that my review wouldn’t matter. They are not wrong; my review likely will not change anyone’s mind. My hope is to guide you, the renter, in making an educated decision when booking your next stay in or near Angel Fire, NM. I don’t think any company should ever take thousands of dollars from someone and not get anything in return, at the very least empathy.

They will likely respond to this review with their canned, we are sorry about your poor experience...then they will try and restate an aspect or two of the content within this review, but this is a continuous concern that the property owner should take action on. They are losing guest in the long term limiting their potential earnings by having this management company work for them. They might even respond to their attempt to be negligent in their own state's health orders even though their conversations and actions don’t match their procedure response. They will vaguely say that they work hard to make sure their guests have a positive experience, and maybe they are right. Even though I didn’t cancel my reservations, I am not likely considered to be a guest in their eyes. Just some random family that had money they gladly took very little upfront cost to them.

I hope this helps you in making the best decision for you and your family. If you can afford trip insurance and want to risk a stay here, go for it. For my family and me, we will never stay there, knowing that we never had a chance to stay there.

I messed up booking here

I had the extreme displeasure of booking a stay with Resort Properties of Angel Fire. My wife and I booked a 3 week stay in the Timbers 5 unit, looking to get out of the city for a few weeks as quarantine with a newborn in our small house was wearing on us. Alarm bells should have gone off when I got a call shortly after booking informing me that New Mexico had a statewide mandatory 2 week quarantine for out of state visitors but that we didn’t need to worry because “it isn’t enforced and they really have no way of tracking how long you have been there”. In retrospect, this should have told me everything I needed to know about how this company views the safety of its customers and those within the community they serve, but we were eager to get out of the shoebox we have been trapped in since March, so we booked it.
Upon arrival, after a 12 hour drive with a 2 month old and our dog, we were informed that our unit had not been cleaned yet and that it would not be ready for us at the 4:00pm check in time. While frustrated and tired, we did not complain, as we did not want to rush the cleaning process. At 4:30, we were told that we could go to our unit and were given the keys.
As we opened the door to the main living area, we were met with a 25+ year old, matted down wall to wall carpet covered in many black stains. Dust coated everything (likely from the adjacent construction ). As my wife opened the blinds to the porch, one of fell off. When I opened screen door, it fell off the track. It is obvious that the owners do not take care of the home. This was all disappointing, and frustrating, but we were exhausted, so we brought our bags up.
Within a few minutes, we realized that not only is the place not maintained, it had not been cleaned prior to our arrival (with a group having just departed that morning). Our dog started eating crunchy unidentified items out of the carpet. Crumbs were all over the kitchen counter. This would be unacceptable any time, but in today’s environment, it an egregious safety hazard that shows a total disregard for health and safety. The final straws were when we realized that the glasses in the cabinet had lipstick smudges on them and there was a film of grime in the tub when we went to bathe our son. In today’s covid-19 world, we did not safe being in this home with our newborn child.
I immediately called and spoke with the owner, Owen. He offered us three options, a 1 bedroom unit (we rented a 3br), a 5 BR unit that cost ~$1,000 per week more than ours, or they would send a cleaning lady the next day. After consulting with my wife, we called back and spoke to Amber who eventually offered to discount the larger unit substantially, saying it would only cost us $250 more than what we had rented, but couldn’t provide clean accommodations for that night.
We tried to explain that this did not solve our problem. Aside from not being able to afford to pay more, we explained that none of their proposed solutions provided us a safe and clean place to stay for that evening. While we were not happy with the upkeep of the unit, the cleanliness and exposure to COVID was our main concern and deciding factor for not being able to stay Amber said they would refund us our rental payment less $700 for taking the property off the market for 2 weeks. She told my wife that “your husband should have read the contract, you do not get a refund for cancellation.” We explained that we were not cancelling, that the unit was unlivable and was not safe to stay in, they did not care. She went on to tell us that if we disputed with our credit card company, she would come after us for the full amount of the rental. 
As a result, we picked up our things and drove another hour at 8pm to stay in a hotel for one night before turning around and driving back home. This company robbed us of our first vacation with our son, $700, and two full days of travel. It goes without saying that I highly recommend that you avoid dealing with this company at all costs. They do not care about your health and safety and do not operate in good faith.
My only wish is that I had read the other one star reviews and listened to them. I now see that I am not the only one that has dealt with this.

This company does not care about you or your safety. Poorly maintained and not clean!

Let me start by saying we originally had booked another home which ended up having maintenance issues. When I received the call, I was a little concerned however Property Management was very helpful and placed us in this home which was very similar. The home is very clean and had everything you needed from cooking to washer/dryer, WIFI, etc. We also were able to bring our dog which truly was the icing on the cake. The location has nice views of the mountains and you can walk to the hiking trails. You you can see the main road down the hill however this didn't impair our stay at all.

I used my RCI exchange to rent a cabin for a week. The unit was over by the golf course and had all the amenities I needed, including washer and dryer. 
The check in and out was efficient and the staff was helpful and friendly.

The management company that handles the Burning Sky Lodge is horrible, they don't take care of renters or the homeowners. Robin, which is part of Angel Fire Resort isn't cleaning and maintaining the home like it should be. This is a beautiful home and could be a near perfect place with a little TLC. I would not recommend staying at this home and steer clear of any home managed by the Angel Fire Resort.

Golf view road in Angel Fire Golf Resort.   We booked with Home Away and couldn’t been more pleased. We had 10 family members and enjoyed the cooking on the gas grill and sitting by the nice fireplace which had plenty of firewood.  Roads were snow plowed which allowed us to get around town and to the ski lifts with no problems.  We plan to return.

Great house - our family was totally impressed with the log home which looked like something out of a magazine.
