It has been maybe 10 years since I booked at the lodge, first time was 1984 so it is an older hotel construct.  I noticed they have updated the rooms, flooring etc. in the past few years.  Bed coverings and pillows are a major update from previous offerings.   The main attraction of this lodge is location, can't be beat for access to the mountain via shuttle vs. having to drive 10,20 miles or more from Greer or Pinetop/Lakeside/Show low.   Jacuzzi was hot, pool nice.
This was superbowl weekend so there were few people out for the weekend.
Had a good Sirloiin steak at the on-site resturant.  Food offerings are limited and lunch was closed due to very low occupancy.   Appears that anyone staying at the property in the winter is there to Ski and then eat lunch at the lift base lodge.

Booked a couple days for Skiiing on the mountain

Me wife and I just stayed at the Sunrise Hotel.  We have stayed here off and on for the past 38 years.  They are updating the rooms but the place is kinda old in general.  Our room was updated and ok.  New flooring, beds, bathroom, but older tv and no hair drier.  We went mid week so there were only a few people at the hotel.  The main restaurant was closed and the snack bar was open with limited selection.  The food was only ok but better than traveling 30 minutes to Greer or Pinetop.  We will probably stay again because so close to ski mountain.

They keep trying to improve

The surrounding area is beautiful However the facilities are in need of a much over do remodeling Unfortunately, the selection is limited unless you stay in Pinetop/Lakeside which I would strongly recommend

Disappointing

This little Best Western Hotel was such a nice surprise. The staff was so nice and welcoming. On check in, the host forgot to give us our member gift bag, with waters and snacks, and went the extra mile to bring it to us as we were unloading. The room was absolutely spotless and nicely furnished even though a bit small. I think it's an older hotel so we don't fault it for being a little small. We had requested a handicap room and it was perfect for that with everything we needed. We enjoyed the breakfast in the very welcoming breakfast room. It would have been nice to have the breakfast served a little longer - cutoff was at 9:00AM. We enjoyed our stay and will definitely stay again.

Surprise quality in this tiny town

Pros:  very friendly staff, great views, close to skiing, big fireplace in the lobby, our room was clean needed updating.
Cons:  where do I start!  Dated, paint peeling off the walls, wall paper peeling, paper thin walls so you hear every sound which made it very hard to sleep, uncomfortable mattress, toilet loose, old dehydrated bars of soap to wash with, limited food choice at the restaurant, took over an hour to get food and it didn't come at the same time for everyone, no other option for dinner except to drive 35 miles, lights in the rooms were missing shades, just a lightbulb glowing, not handicap friendly, no amenities breakfast was unorganized.  
Would I stay there again? Don't think so.

Needs a renovation!

Skiing at Sunrise Park ski area in eastern Arizona is quite good if the snow is adequate.  But staying the night provides a difficult dilemma.  The brand-name hotels are off the reservation, literally, in Pinetop, a good 30 minute drive on dry roads.  Or, you can stay at the one hotel on the Apache reservation, which is an easy 10 minutes from the ski area base parking.

While the price seems right, there’s not much else about the hotel that is.  It has the feel and rhythm of a hotel that’s just about to close for good.  Everything is in terrible repair, including the linens on your bed, bathroom, shower, common areas…everything.  They had queen sheets on our king bed our first night.  Staff is equally blasé, like people who know they are about to be out of a job and are just marking time for the last few weeks.

The one ‘good’ restaurant on premise wasn’t open when we got there and the front desk couldn’t say whether they were going to be open any other evening that weekend.  That leaves you only the bar for food, with limited and certainly not elegant or healthy options.  They sell a lot of pizzas.  

Because of the price and proximity to the ski area, the clientele is predominantly college kids, who want to snowboard all day and party all night, and don’t give a rat’s you-know-what about anyone else’s stay. 

We tried the Jacuzzi our first night and we count ourselves lucky to not have come home with anything.  You know how most hotels really load up their Jacuzzis with so much chlorine you feel like you bathed in a Clorox bottle?  I think at this place, they stopped spending the money on chlorine a while ago.  The pool didn’t look much better. 

If we had gotten any sleep for the two nights we were there, we could have laughed off all the other things that were wrong with the place.  But my sad recommendation is to stay as far away as you can.  Drive the extra 30 minutes and stay in a brand-name hotel in Pinetop, where there are also plenty of good restaurant options.  For example, we had a great breakfast at Bobbi Jo’s.
