Check in is at 4 pm.  I spent the day skiing and came down, parked the car and waited until I was checked in.  An phone msg is sent out in the morning of the check-in.  For whatever reason, I did NOT get that message.  After calling the number on the door for check-in, I was met a few minutes later then the codes for the door to get in and the door to my room.  That worked well!

As others have said, lots of restaurants and shops in the village just a block away.  I started in a local brewery and then went down the street to a nice restaurant.  There are numerous choices in the area within walking distance.

WHY SO CHEAP?  You will share a bathroom but even though the place was full with other skiers, I had no problem with any waits for a bathroom.  The room I got was private, it was simple with up to three bunk type beds.  I got a simple desk and a lamp.

For entertainment, I watched an Amazon movie over their internet.  There were no delays on the internet with my surfing or on the movie.  I watched on an IPAD.

VERY CLEAN.  My check in was VERY FRIENDLY.  It was made clear no guests, nobody should be let in by me and that no alcohol was allowed.  The kitchen seemed adequate and I could have stayed very cheaply for several days by cooking my own meals.  Food would have to be left in a community fridge.

This is NOT a 5 star  motel but it is a nice place to stay

STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE. This owner is very irresponsible and unprofessional. I booked two beds a month ago, but he has not confirmed my reservation so far. He told that he will cancel my reservation if there is any group coming to this place. HE DOES NOT CARE ABOUT INDIVIDUAL TRAVELERS. HE WILL CANCEL YOUR RESERVATION ANYTIME HE WANTS TO MAXIMIZE HIS MONEY.

STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE!!!

This QUIET, AFFORDABLE, FRIENDLY hostel is a large property with two modern houses (both ADA compliant) situated just outside The Village (walking distance)-- one large blue house (for large groups & families) and the smaller, yellow house (for small groups and individuals). I have only stayed at the yellow house-- it has a large kitchen (bring your own food)  two large common areas, three bathrooms, and a laundry area. Richard "Sarge" and his lovely wife not only keep the property to Health Dept standards-- they exceed them! There is plenty of parking on the property, and the owner always makes sure that the driveway is clear of snow and ice in the winter. Each building and bedroom has its own key code, which expires when you check out-- they are very security concious, which I can really appreciate as a single female. I visit there off and on to visit friends and get plenty of work done on their very fast WiFi connection.

One of the BEST HOSTELS I've stayed at!

I reserved a room for a ski trip.  On my way up, I got a call asking if they can sell my room to another party since I was being delayed due to road closure.  After I agreed pending a refund, I never received it.  Had to file a dispute.

Richard, the owner was super organized and checked me in quickly. He even texted before my stay so he was ready when I arrived. The property is large and has two hostels. One yellow and one blue. I stayed in the blue shared room. Everyone really nice and approachable. The bed was comfy and Richard provided everything from toiletries and even shampoo if needed.
The location was great just a few minutes drive to both Bear Ski Resorts, ask about discount rental gear. Also order lift tickets online a few days in advance. Much cheaper than day of on the mountain. The hostel is a 3-5 minute walk to the downtown shopping area and restaurants.
No breakfast provided but everything is close by or can use the kitchen to make something.

Place to rest after the slopes

I have been there with my friends on the last winter. It was the girls trip and we stayed at this hostel. There is no entrance to the hostel like stairs or some pedestrians path! So you have to walk through the ramp which is the entrance of parking lots. That night we were coming back to the hostel and the road was so slippy! And I fell down on my right shoulder directly through the asphalt on the ramp! And I broke my shoulder! The bad thing is they didn't have any sign that says It is gonna be slippy the road or they didn't clean their entrance to protect their guests health! And after this happened I called them to say that this happened and its their fault! But unfortunately they said this is not their responsibility and they didn't even care! So I am not recommending you to go this careless place!

Careless management!

We stayed 2 nights on our way to Vegas from Los Angeles. You won't get more for your money anywhere else in Big Bear. The location is right in the downtown area and we walked to dinner and live music. Not many hostels have a mini fridge and sofa in the bedroom. Very nice and the price was right.

Clean rooms with lake view and flatscreen TV. Fridge in room! Wow.

The property is definitely on the utilitarian side of things....very basic. But on that note it is very clean and functional. You can't beat the location! Just a block or two from Big Bear Village with restaurants, bars and shopping. Big Bear is a great little town and this is definitely a great place if you are on a budget!

Great location and price

I had a fabulous time on my recent trip up to Big Bear! This hostel was the perfect place to stay, the inside is spacious yet cozy and everything is super clean. There is a nice living room to lounge in with a huge stone fire place and cushy sofa. There's also a big fridge and kitchen if you want to make your own food. All the staff are interesting, friendly and helpful! I slept like a rock both nights, it was nice and quiet and the mattresses are sooo comfy. It's walking distance from an awesome tea/coffee shop and very close to the lake and marina too! Behind the lodge are some paths with nice spots to meditate! We hiked to a beautiful oasis of hot springs one day which was a blast... the only thing is next time I will bring my ginger root because I got really carsick on the curvy roads!!!
