This was for us, an excellent stay.  For some others, I can see that there might be some things they may not really like so be sure to check it out before your stay so you won't be in for  any surprises.

The location isn't really close to too much, and we kind of liked that.  There is a small supermarket right across the street with limited choices but probably most things you might need to get by.  The help seemed very friendly, however, many things are very expensive in this store.  Not sure why that is?  As far as something like a restaurant, you almost would have to drive into Fortuna to find any choices.

This is an old restored lodge with much history behind it and that is one thing we loved about it.  Keeping all the original architecture is very nice.

When we checked in, late afternoon, the young man and young woman at the front desk were very friendly and helpful.  Sorry to say the young woman working the desk in the morning wasn't quite the same though.  Maybe she had to get up too early?

There are no elevators here so be prepared to carry your things up the stairs to the second, or third floor when open, where the rooms are located.  This might be difficult for some but I think they have help available if needed.

Our room was very large, and comfortable, with a King bed.  The mattress was memory foam.  I do know that some people don't care for them and others do.  My wife didn't like the mattress but I was ok with it.

One thing we had a problem with is there is no Kleenex in the room.  I asked at the front desk and they said they don't furnish any???  We have traveled all over the country and this is the first place we have ever come across that doesn't have any furnished in the room.  Come on, maybe they could at least put a small travel box in the bathroom?

You can get something to eat here but it is done up a bit different.  You go to a counter/bar, and place your order.   You will then be given a pager that lets you know when your food is ready.  At that time it will be placed out on a counter in the dining room and you are free to take it to what ever area you would like to eat.  There are many tables in the dining room and also in other areas.  There is no service in the dining room but you can enjoy your food there and that was fine with us.  There are limited items on the menu but we ate there and it was really very good.  I would recommend trying it.

I would also recommend Scotia Lodge and also be sure to check out the history of Scotia as well as the history of the lodge.  We would return if in the area.

Quaint historic hotel

I’m so happy I stumbled upon this hotel while searching for pet friendly hotels for our road trip! This hotel doesn’t just provide a comfortable place to sleep for the night, it provides an experience. We have stayed in many hotels and the Scotia Lodge had the most comfortable bed we have ever had in a hotel. I felt like I was in my own bed! Everything about the room, and lobby was perfectly charming! The staff was friendly and attentive. The only negative was that we only had one night scheduled to stop here. We will be booking this place again, but for a longer stay, on our next road trip through this area! 

An Absolute Gem

We loved this totally quaint hotel. It’s a perfect launch site for launching in the many trails among redwoods along Avenue of the Giants. The room was spacious, bed comfortable, food in the diner was fine, and the staff very gracious. Classic old mill town owned by the company, gradually assuming local control. I’m very grateful they put in the considerable effort to restore the place. So much better than a typical Americana clone motel.

Our stay at Scotia Lodge was a unique experience.  We wanted to hike in the Humboldt Redwoods State Park for several days and staying in Scotia was ideal.  We didn't realize at the time that Scotia was an old mill town with a very small population, but learning about the history of the town and also experiencing the lodge itself was really fun. This was party due to their cannabis theme (while we don't partake, we assume they are catering to a specific clientele).  The staff was lovely, and we appreciated our very comfortable king bed in our spacious, clean, quiet room.  

A Quiet Gem in the Redwoods

Bottom line: If you want a nice play to stay while visiting The Avenue of the Giants, this quirky cannabis resort is the only game in town. Therefore, the ranking is elevated from "poor" to "average."  Value is poor got average.

The room was clean with some modern touches, but this is a 100-year-old hotel with doors and floors that show their age, so you can see light through your door to the hallway.  The bed was comfortable enough and the bathroom adequate.

The dining -- and use of that word is a stretch -- experience was nothing short of bizarre.  The eating area is at the back side of the lodge, through a barren ballroom.  You order at a window, as one would at a beach snack shack.  The food on offer is about as appealing as a snack bar.  When your food is ready a short order cook or a teenager working the counter brings the food to the dining room and then leaves it on a condiment table -- even if you are the only people in the room and the food is obviously for you -- a sort of willful display of not providing service. (But don't forget to tip!)

The laughable "Resort Fee" (yes, Scotia Lodge, President Biden was talking to you during his State of the Union address) is disingenuous and highlights the ungracious and stingy aspects of a hotel that has pretensions of grandeur.  In addition to whatever room rate we paid (it was about $130 with another $20 or so in taxes), we were also charged a $30 per night "resort fee," which we were told was to cover the many amenities offered by the hotel.    Parsimoniously provided, these amenities amounted to: 

2 "welcome" drinks.  From a shelf above the front desk guests choose from 4 or 5 beers or hard ciders and 3 or 4 soft drinks or waters.  This amenity is one-time-only.  Even if you stay three nights and pay 3 * $30 resort fee, you will only be welcomed with such a drink once.

2 "free" drinks in the room's fridge: two mini (3-4 ounce) cans of juice. Unclear if this is daily.

2 small decanters of hooch - one gin, one whiskey - in the room.  This was per stay.  The unsealed decanters raised our eyebrows.

2 pieces of local, artisanal chocolate.  (Translation: two Ghirardelli "squares" - you know, the kind you buy in big bags at Costco.)

1 packet of coffee in the room . A foil packet of local roast is provided along with a note warning you to use it sparingly, as it is not refreshed daily and is expected to last you  a few days.

Lobby coffee and breakfast muffins.  Note: the individually cellophane-wrapped blueberry muffins were inedible. Perhaps this is where the cannabis concierge comes in handy ... had we made us of this service, perhaps we would have enjoyed the muffins?

We had planned to stay two or three nights but decided to move on.  This was not for us, either in terms of personal comfort or value.

The architecture and original detailing such as the wood-paneled lobby is lovely and well cared for.  The front desk staff were polite and efficient.  The eatery is what it is, and, by our standards, does not qualify as a restaurant and does not distinguish the lodge as the luxury option it aspires to be.  As for price, we would have been more comfortable  had the lodge simply and honestly charged $160 for the room and not made such a show over what value they were providing, when, in truth, there is little value added by the resort fee.


Comfortable room, dubious 'resort fee'

This is a beautifully restored 100-year-old hotel, and a wonderful alternative to the soulless Comfort Inns and Best Westerns along 101. 
Very friendly staff.  Best steak sandwich in the state. 
The rooms have been brought up to modern standards, while also retaining some of historic details – e.g., original shower fixtures.
Be aware that there's a resort fee. And while the value is certainly there – the fee covers a shot of handmade vodka and gin, some snacks, and a choice of two other alcoholic beverages — it should probably be optional, since not everyone needs that much booze.
Since it's a historic hotel, the walls aren't as thick as those at the Courtyard by Marriott. (I see that others have complained about that.) 
Can't wait for my next visit.

Step back in time

My wife and I spent two nights at the Scotia Lodge after a winter camping excursion to the Redwood Coast was washed out due to the storms pummeling California for the past week.  While disappointed that we would not be doing any camping, we found the Scotia Lodge to be a wonderful place to spend a few nights. The Lodge itself is a very cool old building with beautiful wood floors, wide staircases, nooks and crannies worth exploring, and delightfully large comfortable rooms.  

We were shown up to our rooms when we initially checked in by a very pleasant and knowledgable woman working at the front desk.  She provided the information we needed, how to control heat etc, and the handed us our two keys.  There was something comforting about being handed keys instead of the standard key card.  The room we had was very large with a comfortable king bed, a writing desk, and two two chairs situated off to the side. The room was equipped with a small refrigerator, pour over coffee setup with some locally roasted coffee, a nice slug of gin and scotch to warm yourself on a cool wet night, a few orange juices, some cook fresh water, and two pieces of local chocolate,  The whole set up took me back to a time when hotels were pleasant interesting places instead of cookie cutter boxes.   

My wife recieved a massage our first night at the hotel. The massage room was right down the hall. The masseuse was outstanding, knowledgable, and very pleasant. My wife could not have been happier with the service.

There is a nice bar downstairs that doubles as a restaurant. Basically bar food, but the burger was outstanding and the Caesar Salad I had on the second night was very good.  It was nice to be able to get a drink or two and eat dinner without leaving the premises after a day out and about.  

The Lodge is all about customer service and they do a great job.  Everyone we encountered at the Lodge, employees and guests, were most pleasant.  

We will be staying at the Scotia Lodge next time we head down this way from the Portland area.  I highly recommend the place and encourage others to stay at this gem of a place in a company town. It will not be for everyone, but if you interested in stepping back in time a bit when customer service dominated the lodging industry then you may well enjoy the sense of comfort a night at the Scotia Lodge provides. We absolutely loved out stay.

Wonderful Comforting Stay

Was looking for a nice place to stay on our roadtrip down the Oregon Coast back to CA and this place looked like a special place online.   We didn’t feel it lived it to some of reviews and we were disappointed overall. 

If you stay there mid week be prepared to seek elsewhere for breakfast and that the Wonder Bar will be closed.  I see that looking more closely online it states the hours of operation for dining, we missed that part.  You can order drinks from the Main & Mill pass thru window.  The grocery market across the street at around 3pm did not have any fresh deli or baked items to purchase when and is very limited.  Also there are no other food options in Scotia. 

The lobby is beautiful and very nicely done.   The gal at the front desk gave us hot hand towels to freshened up which was nice after a drive and offered us a beverage. Upon later we realized we were already charged a $25 amenities fee that covers this.   The amenities fee also included a small charge for a small carafe of bourbon and vodka in your room, as well as 2 juice boxes and 2 bite size Hersey Chocolates in your room frig.   I would think this would be optional and not a flat fee.   Our room was fine and the bed was comfortable.  We asked for a walk-in shower instead of a claw tub setup and that was dialed in as requested.  As noted in another review the walls are a paper thin so bring your ear plugs.  The rest of the lodge felt a bit neglected, a bit eerie and sad from carpeting to common space furniture and decor.  

The restaurant Main & Mill is behind the scenes and you order from an pass through window at the bar and get a buzzer when your food is ready and you food is placed on a counter.  Not a big deal but you are asked to bus your own table, little things like the floor around the bussing area was a mess and wasn’t cleaned up while we there.

Had nice elements but can’t recommend

Looking for different things to do, and unique places to stay around Eureka brought us here. A well-updated ancient building in a quaint area, with great atmosphere and character, comfortable rooms and beds, windows that open, good food, a cool bar/lounge, and terrific staff members.

A Nice Change of Pace, with Character

This is the place! It has everything anyone would want. A great restaurant, delicious food, try the chicken salad, it pulled pork sandwich. The bar is cozy and when you are ready for bed, it’s quiet and comfortable! Great beds!
I will be back! The service was good too.
