Staying at Pomaika'i Lucky Farm was thoroughly enjoyable experience. The owners were extremely hospitable and it was really nice to spend time in a rural area. However, it's important to note that this may not be for everyone.

Number 1: it's a farm first and a B&B second. They have chickens and roosters roaming freely, and so expect there to be lot's of clucking and crowing at odd hours (e.g. 4am). Combined with the screen-only windows means you will likely be woken up throughout the night. Earplugs are recommended! Also, the mosquitoes are numerous so you will want to bring some bug repellant.

Number 2: Breakfast is early (7:30-8:30am); suffice to say, you need to be a morning person. But the breakfasts are absolutely delicious so they are a must! Now during breakfast you'll also probably get treated to a large amount of stories, anecdotes, and such from the owner JP. He has a monolog-ing style where you just sit, eat, and listen.

If the details above are deal-breakers for you then perhaps reconsider, but you'd be missing out on a genuinely authentic and unique experience. I personally enjoy being close to nature when on vacation and I love learning about the history of the places that I visit, so the points above were more pros than cons for me. I would recommend staying here if you want the place that you stay at to itself become a part of your vacation.

A truly authentic pace to stay!

Staying at the Lucky farm was a unique experience and if we have the chance to come back to Hawaii, we'll definitely come back there! It's true, the kitchen is a bit small and not so functionnal but well... you'll probably not prepare a 5 star dinner, so it's more than enough. Yes, the mosquitos will chase you and the rooster and frogs will try to keep you awake all night but there are two simple solutions: mosquito spray and earplugs. If you forgot yours, just ask Johnsie or JP. The two owners are not only the most friendly and helpful persons on earth, they also know a lot about nature, music, culture and many other things and will love to share their knowledge with you (take a small tour of the farm with JP if you have time!). Contrary to what I could reed, they are not arrogant at all and are very curious about any new thing they can learn! The breakfast was the best, a great teamwork of both: JP collecting the fruits from the farm every morning and Johnsie preparing her delicious specialities. To sum up: it's not a luxurious hotel, so don't expect anything like that. But you'll be close to nature, eat great organic food and meet incredible people... Isn't it the meaning of a trip to Hawaii?

Amazing experience!

Yes, almost everything people tell here is true: the roosters waiking you up, the mosquitos eating you alive and JP giving monologues all breakfast long. But the breakfast is the best (never seen such a fruit platter, and they do it every morning! and the coffee!!! and the cooked breakfast!!! and everythin is REALLY organic), everything they do is well thought, comes directly from the hart and you feel that. They just love the land. And so do we. That's why I give it five stars. And Johnsie sang for us, with her incredible voice (JP has a nice voice too). So yes, we loved our stay.

Great breakfast!

I have mixed opinions of the place. You will be staying literally in a farm. The rooster will wake you couple an hour before dawn. There's crazy amount of mosquitos but we were fine after brought the candles. We even left an extra candle for the next guest. The room was okay. It was very old school Hawaiian if you want get the feel for that. The community areas is really bad though. All the extra stuff they had so we can "borrow" looked like they were found on the side of the street. The owners were very nice though. They tried to make our stay as convenient as possible but the place was just so bad. I was however thankful that we were the only ones there at the time because I ate all the fruits the owners offered every morning. They were so fresh and delicious. Do I regret staying there, no but I wouldn't book this place again.

You have to try their fruit

This is a nice location, close to good local food and excellent snorkeling with nice beaches close by. The host is kind and prepares a nice breakfast. The room is in a tin roof shed with screened openings. The farm doesn't appear to have had any work done in the last ten years but despite that the mature trees have plenty of fruit for a great breakfast. The outdoor kitchen has a dirt floor and is in the open air making it unusable do to the extreme number of mosquitoes. The several roosters on the property will wake you up at 3:30am and proceed to torture you for the next three hours. You will feel as if you are sleeping in the chicken coop when the roosters crow.
