We stayed at the Monte Verde Inn for a wedding. Our room was across the street from the main hotel, in room #5. DO NOT STAY IN ROOM 5. Top corner of the building with windows that faced the parking lot and the street. Just a few feet from the front porch where people gathered and partied until 1am. Three nights in a row. Breakfast in a basket was nice, but room was just okay. No one was on duty at night to silence the partiers. 

AVOID ROOM #5

Upon our arrival we were greeted by our friendly host Randy.  He gave us an overview of the city with amazing recommendation for sights to see and places to eat. We were then escorted to our king deluxe room located next to the office.  It was perfect. All ammenties, coffee anytime and the cute patio outside our door was perfect for our pre-dinner cheese and wine. Our morning lite breakfast was the perfect start to our day.  The entire staff are so accommodating and friendly.  The inn is in a perfect location and on flat ground. I highly recommend staying at the Monte Verde.  You will not be disappointed.

Perfection in Carmel by the sea

Carmel is extraordinary, and the Inn is smack in the middle.  The hotel it self is not much to speak of, offering dated pretense rather than fresh luxury.  However, as others have said before me, a carmel hotel is only used twice a day - waking up and laying down.  The rest of the time should be out and about!  Bit those movements on the terrace as day turns to dusk turns to dark, were pricess!

View makes the difference!

This is the BEST inn I’ve ever stayed in. The entire inn is gorgeous, built in 1915, and the rooms are stunning. Clean, complimentary items and the most welcoming manager, Randy. He took so much time to carefully and meaningfully recommend sights, restaurants, etc. and made the entire stay feel incredibly special. We will definitely be back and look forward to seeing Randy and the Monte Verde Inn again, soon! 1000/10 stars from us! 

Randy is the BEST! Gorgeous inn and town.

Unfortunately we were disappointed with this hotel/room. We had the room next to the office downstairs. It’s SO incredibly loud, both from the office, the parking lot, and people going up and down the street. The noise sounds like it’s right inside your room. We got a horrible night’s sleep. And forget any type of afternoon nap. Now I understand why they have two pair of ear plugs in the bathroom. They need to update, insulate, sound proof!  The louvered blind were broken/falling apart. The bathroom smells like mold/sewage. I can’t believe I paid $335 for this place for mid week! We are Carmel regulars and won’t be back to this hotel. We will go back to our favorites, Normandy Inn Cottages, Cypress Inn and Hotel Carmel. 

They need to sound proof!!

The Inn is perfectly located in the center of town, convenient to restaurants, shops and the beach. They have parking. Our room at the Inn was fine for one night. I'm sure there are nicer rooms at the Inn, ours had a tiny bathroom with a shower, a wardrobe with TV,  two chairs and a fireplace (with Duraflame).  It didn't feel very private with a location facing the street, at street level. They really should turn that into a breakfast room. The street was noisy late afternoon but was surprisingly quiet at night. The offerings are simple but still include terry cloth robes and Lather toiletries. They need better pillows! The place is very clean. The breakfast basket is nicely put together but as others have noted, there isn't anywhere to sit and eat it. We ate outside at the tables in front of the entrance, a bit chilly in May. The coffee is from a nearby coffeehouse and is really excellent. Randy checked us in -- he's very helpful and knowledgeable. 

Great location in the town of Carmel, not luxury but has all the essentials

A nice facility to be sure. The location is perfect. Just off Ocean Avenue which is the Main Street in town. We had a large room in the “east” wing. Breakfast was brought to the room in a basket every morning by 8:15, and was very generous and healthy. The owners (husband and wife) and the evening desk clerk (Randy) were friendly, helpful, and very knowledgeable about the area.
The negatives: It was very noisy and the room (at lest ours) could use updating.

Comfortable 

The warmest welcome you could wish for from Randy. The building itself looks a little tired, but so do many in Carmel, however the room was spotlessly clean. Robes in the closet, really nice toiletries , good coffee in the room and a decanter of sherry. The breakfast basket was really good with a great selection of foods. We were close to the street so Saturday night was a little noisy at one time. I can imagine summer could be loud but I think that would pertain to most places.

Warmest welcome

I would say you get what you pay for, but in this case, you kind of don't. We were in room 12 in the "main" building, A Queen bed with tub and separate shower. It was on the 2nd floor with another room directly above us (the floors and walls are very thin but it's an old building so that wasn't a surprise). It was $299/night not including taxes. The room was very small, think Europe, but smaller. There were 2 chairs, but not even a small table to eat at. The tub and shower were nice, and the included breakfast was continental-style. It came daily around 8:15 with a light knock at the door.  Unfortunately, nowhere to eat breakfast but on the bed. This room had a shared deck but it was rainy on and off so eating outside wasn't an option. It would be a nice touch to add a couple of large tables with umbrellas as an option, maybe even a heat lamp. If you want your room cleaned, you must specify it but putting the door tag out indicating you want service. If you forget to put the tag out, cleaning staff apparently assume you don't want service. To end on a positive note, the front office staff were very pleasant and welcoming and you can't beat the location. It's one block from Main Street and 4 blocks to the ocean. Oh and also, 2 small parking lots which is great because parking in the area is very challenging. 

Cute but pricey

This small hotel is located right in the heart of Carmel. I assume that means that they get more than their fair share of business and don't really have to concern themselves with maintenance and repairs. It's the only explanation I have for the miserable state of the property. 

Overall, this property is dingy, needs a lot of work, and is in miserable condition. The original windows might be interesting to look at I suppose but you won't get any peace in your room. I could hear a woman coughing all night two rooms away. The walkway to my room needs to be torn up and completely redone. It's horribly patched and soft in certain sections. There are scratches, dents, missing paint, and other issues in the room. 

The night stands are absurd. The glass tops aren't attached and the glass slides around every time you need to grab an item. One of the glass panes was badly chipped.  There are NO USB ports, etc. on the night stands. You have to pull the night stands away from the wall to access the plug to charge your phone, etc. We're not in 2010. It's 2022. Go buy a multiport with USB for every room. (I mean - come on...)

I stayed in the "East" property across the street and it looks and feels like an old, converted apartment complex. It is adjacent to a restaurant or some sort and at 1130PM you will hear the clashing, smashing and churning of dishes, restaurant workers, and other noises through the paper thin walls.

There's no vibe. No bar. No place to hang out. I would look elsewhere and find a spot that at least has a fire ring and a bar (and there are SEVERAL just down the street).

Disappointing and at $250/night - absolutely not worth it.
