My wife and I came here for our 31st wedding anniversary . It was an incredible way to experience the colonial era feel of historic charleston with modern day amenities . The owners have spent so much time and money updating this gem that it’s a sight to experience. Our room had an amazing balcony that I sat out on and enjoyed the fresh cool air . My wife wants us to buy a new bed now to emulate the comfort we felt last night !! We slept like baby lions ! I love the Ashley and will be back!!

Historic Charleston at it’s best

We just stayed at the Ashley to celebrate our wedding anniversary.  This house is newly renovated and beautiful!  The beds were super comfortable, the room was well-equipped and nicely decorated.  The common areas are very inviting, with breakfast available (breakfast sandwiches, yogurt parfaits, french toast sticks, and coffee) in the morning, sodas, waters, and snacks available at all times.  Bikes and a fire pit are available for guests.  The porches give it that old southern charm.  Location was a bit of a walk to King street, but an easy Uber ride.  Parking was free.  We felt safe walking around the streets at night.  I highly recommend staying here for a true historic southern experience.  The new owners have thought of everything!  

Experience true historic southern charm

The Inn is under new ownership and significant upgrades have occurred. The staff is friendly and helpful. Very walkable. Great options whether you are in need of one room or a grouping. I love the top floor bedroom with extra sitting area but many may prefer one of the three rooms on second floor that all have access to that amazing piazza. Love the historic detail!

New Owners, Great Service

Great location to any place in the Charleston area.  Wonderful room, and an amazing Veranda.   The Inn spoke of true old South architecture. Very prompt help from staff!  Awesome time away.  We will defiantly recommend to our friends!!

Great Vacation

There were cons and pros - but a lot of cons.  

We had a 3 night stay at The Ashley in October 2023.  In some ways, it was lovely.  But, we think things should have been better.

As you will see from the pictures, we noticed some things:

1. Small thing:  Most of the time, we saw no milk for the coffee.  There was also no instruction for how to operate the coffee maker.  These should be standard - a card with instructions and milk and cream in the frig.

2. Small thing:  Almost our full 3-day stay, we saw no fruit in the fruit basket.  What is the problem?

3. Small thing: Someone unpacked an Amazon box and left it sitting in the Lobby.  Pretty shabby.

4. Big thing: The person who was in the Lobby when we arrived on Oct 27 was pretty unfriendly.  She did not ever greet us with a smile and acted to me and my wife as if we were in her way. 

5.  Big thing: We were distressed that there was nowhere secure to keep valuables.  If you cannot have a safe in the rooms (you SHOULD), then you need to have somewhere to allow guests to store computers, etc.  .

6. Moderate annoyance: The corner of Ashley and Bee is surprisingly busy at night.  The windows are not very soundproof. Not great for sleeping.

7. Annoyance: On the Saturday night, one of the guests was making a lot of "party noise" after the 10 pm quiet hours. There is no one on sight to contact.

8. Planning issue?  There is no place in bathroom to put stuff - each bathroom needs a small cabinet or shelf - there is only a tiny bit of room on the sink to put things, and people generally have STUFF. 

9.  Housekeeping issue - Speaking of the bathroom, apparently, no one checked on the amount of soap in the bottles in the shower.  We were in Room 3 - the shampoo was empty and so was the shower gel. Just poor service.

Positives:  We did like the location, the general layout and the space in our room.  The decor was nice also, and the wi-fi was good.  But, that is a long list of things that we think should have been better.

PS - It is right next to the MUSC medical district, so a reasonable place to stay if in town for that.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with The Ashley. The online description matches perfectly with what you receive. It is a charming old home that features small but quaint rooms, a beautiful porch on both levels, and a nice parlor area on the first floor.  Breakfast was there every morning in a warmer as advertised. We had  no issues with parking as some other guests have mentioned.  

There were 2 reasons I did not rate the property higher.  One, it was a 10-15 minute walk to anything. Not horrible, and Uber rides in town were very reasonable. Two, there is no service wow factor. Communications are all email. We did not interact face to face with any staff during our stay.  This may be ideal for some people, just not me.  

Adequate, not over the top

Pros:
The Ashley Inn is in a great location with private parking! Only about 1- 1.5 miles to King St and the Market.  
They have a good grab and go breakfast
They have a mini fridge that was stocked with waters, sodas etc…
Owners did respond in a quick manner regarding some issues that we had.

New owners so we were trying to be understanding, but our first time in Charleston and our stay was just okay! We did love the charm of the home, but it is need of some TLC and to pay more attention to detail!!! 

Cons:
*There were buckets in the middle of the second floor due to a leak of some sort. 
*The ice in the ice machine was in a huge clump. We couldn’t really get any ice out of it.
*we didn’t have WiFi or cable for the first half of our stay. (Owners were quick to respond though)
*Our bath towels, wash clothes and hand towels were old, worn and needed to be discarded. Not comfortable at all!
*AC issues: very very cold the first 2 days and then no AC the last night (it kicked on about 4am but it wasn’t cool)
I’m not sure if I would stay there again! There are many options to choose from around the area.

Just okay!

The room was nicely furnished. The common areas were being renovated so there was no breakfast or afternoon wine & cheese. The Inn is at the intersection of 2 busy streets, thus our room was very noisy, all day and all night. The veranda outside of the room gives you a nice view of the area.

Nice room

We stayed in the Carriage House. It was roomy for the 3 of us. The reason for the 3 stars is the conditions of the accommodation. No need for big repairs but just the small issues include: cracked toilet seat, dirty and rusted refrigerator, sparsely equipped kitchen, mold in the shower-not a lot but enough, and the fixture in bathroom didn’t work properly. That needs to be changed out. Overheard that the main house 2nd floor didn’t have hot water for a day. Hair dryer didn’t work but that was promptly replaced after a few calls. Couches need to be professionally cleaned. Paint would help too. 
Still we had a nice time and it gives you a lot of privacy with a good location. But for the price, hangers should be included and no one on staff should argue that people steal them and therefore should not be replaced- including wine glasses! (Dollar store type)
If these details were addressed, this place could be 5 stars! Pretty common areas and porches. It’s hard to have a bad experience in Charleston!

Tired and needs updating

The place was dirty and the property needs major TLC. I dont mind if a property is old or dated, BUT it must be clean. The property was dirty with cobwebs on the windows (see pictures), and the cushion had what appeared to be a dead bug stuck to it!

As the property is poorly maintained, it seems to attract a lot of mosquitoes. Whilst insect repellent was provided and used, both my wife and I had been bitten loads!

I note in a review that it is under new ownership and that they may be trying their best, however, cleanliness and attention to detail are a must and unfortunately the experience was poor. I would suggest booking elsewhere, until such time that the owners take running a hotel seriously.
