Chatfield is a history place and Oakenwald is its crown jewels. Built in 1897, it has weathered all the storms of time--and then some.  I cannot imagine having a more comfortable or interesting stay anywhere.  And, I was unable to explore everything  (e.g., the wall containing items from around the world built by George Haven in the back of the property along the territorial road used by Civil War soldiers on their way out of town to Winona to help save the Union)  because of the inclement weather.  Ruth Ann, my host, couldn't have been nicer or more accommodating.  Also, she is an excellent chef.  The breakfast was simply outstanding.  Bottom line, you will love this place!!!!

History Comes Alive at Oakenwald

I had such an enjoyable stay at the Oakenwald. When I realized I got my travel date wrong (already at the airpoirt no less!), I called Ruth Ann to explain my mishap and she couldn’t have been more understanding or accommodating in re-booking me for the correct date a week later.  Upon arrival, I felt immediately welcomed. The bones of the house are beautiful, with stunning woodwork and detail at every turn. I loved my room, with its generous seating area and fireplace. Everything was so comfortable—the bed, the water pressure, the temperature. Ruth Ann took such great care of me. And her breakfast totally lived up to the hype! Best blueberry pancakes I have ever had. It was a true pleasure chatting with Ruth Ann and learning about the history of the Oakenwald and its family, who so clearly view maintaining the property’s legacy as a labor of love. Thank you, Ruth Ann, for your hospitality!

What a memorable stay

The Oakenwald Terrace Bed & Breakfast is the best B&B that we have ever stayed at. We booked our stay for our 55th Wedding Anniversary and and loved every minute of it. The owners, (Ruth Ann & Bob Lund) were gracious hosts and spent a lot of time with us explaining the history of the home and the wonderful Victorian contents. We visited on December 27&28th and the home was wonderfully decorated for the Christmas holidays. This B&B was beyond expectations and explaination. The sleeping accommodations were great and comfortable, and the food was exceptional. They were able to accommodate my wife's dietary restrictions with great care. We would highly reccommend this B&B to anyone who want's a great getaway.

Greatest B&B Ever Visited

My husband, Ted and I had  a wonderful stay at Oakenwald Terrace to celebrate my upcoming birthday.  Ruth Ann gave us a nice tour of the historic home upon our arrival. They were very accommodating for when we wanted to have our meals.  Our two breakfasts and Friday night dinner were delicious.  We had 4-5 courses per meal and even got a yummy dessert at breakfast.  We did not go away hungry.  They treated us well.  Eating dinner at a Bed & Breakfast was new to us.  We were glad we stayed on a weekend and were able to have dinner there. It made it a wonderfully relaxing evening.  During our meals we had great conversations with Ruth Ann and her husband, Bob.  They were pleasant and friendly, such a hospitable couple.  At each meal the table was set beautifully with different pretty china and silverware.   Ruth Ann also gave us great recommendations for places to eat and things to do in the area.  Our room was cozy, clean and the bed comfortable.  A relaxing atmosphere.  We would enjoy staying here again in the future.

An enjoyable birthday celebration

As a first time experience at a Bed &Breakfast, my stay was absolutely first rate! I appreciated the host taking the time to give me a tour and pointing out all the amenities (of which there are many).
   My room was large, quiet and very comfortable. And the three course breakfast spectacular! Greatly appreciate them accommodating a dietary restriction.
   I would like to mention the high level of attention to detail, both in the restoration of this beautiful Victorian mansion, but also to the comfort and convenience of the guests.

Charming Experience

This is a lovely Victorian home, filled with Victorian furniture, antiques, and decor.   The house is huge, and guests have access to all of the main-floor rooms.  We stayed in the third floor attic room and thoroughly enjoyed the seclusion.  Breakfast was multi-course and impressively delicious.  We were only a 25 minute drive from the bike trails in Lanesboro, so we enjoyed Lanesboro biking without paying Lanesboro B&B prices.

Beautiful Victorian Home, Warm Hospitality

We stayed in the Blue Room and loved it. The temperature was perfect,  the linens clean and comfortable, and the bathroom spotless. Ruth Ann made a four-course breakfast that was delicious and beautiful. The history of the house was fascinating to us as we have a family connection to the original owners. If you love antiques, you"ll be in heaven! We would definitely visit again.

Extraordinary!

I spent two wonderful nights at Oakenwald and certainly recommend it. The historic 1897 home is beautiful and full of antiques (which are fascinating even if they're not to your taste). My lovely room was comfortable, and it was great fun to spend time in the amazing common areas. Breakfast was delicious and abundant. Innkeeper Ruth Ann is not only an excellent cook, but also was graciously welcoming and full of interesting information about the house, Chatfield and the area. If you're looking for a place that is memorable and not just a comfortable, but forgettable, place to lay your head, Oakenwald is a great choice. 

A Special Place

We enjoyed every part of our get away at Oakenwald Terrace Bed and Breakfast in Chatfield, MN.  We felt so special with all of the personal touches and royal treatment.  Our stay was marvelous.  Everything was clean and convenient.  The hospitality was great and the food was even better.

An evening in perfect peace.

My husband and I went here for New Year’s Eve. We slept in Anna’s room which was beautiful with a fire place that was roaring when we came in. The hosts were absolutely lovely and took us on a tour of the home. Their story is really interesting as is their family connection to the house. The food was excellent and you won’t need lunch. The other nice thing is that it is about 25 minutes from down town Rochester. this gives you easy access to the restaurants and shopping while being able to easily retreat to this small town home. We absolutely loved our stay. We will be back.
