Some of the worst customer service I've ever experienced with ANY business. And pretty heartless as well.
After traveling for hours from St. Louis, and on the fourth stage of a five day road trip, moving my new wife from Tucson, AZ to Queens, NY, we booked the Olentangy Inn because it looked really nice for a pet friendly hotel. We got there just after midnight. So when I walk in to the "lobby", the attendant looks at the reservation and sees that I booked my wife in her own room under her name (but paying under my card details). She tells me that my wife must come in and present her ID. Now, I haven't had to do this at any part of my trip, and we stayed in the La Quinta, Quality Inn and the Best Western. OK. So I call my wife in. She presents her ID. I used my last name on her reservation, even though her name on her ID is her maiden name. We just got married a month ago, and we were so busy preparing for this move that we didn't have the time to get the name changed. Once again...haven't had to do this at any part of this trip. The attendant is stuck on the last name on the reservation, even though my wife IS THERE, and her face matches the picture on the ID. Showed her our wedding pictures. Showed her our rings. I told my wife that if I have to produce our marriage license, we're leaving. And the attendant actually asked to see it!!! Eff that! I'm like "What more do you want from us???" So, bottom line, because of a small discrepancy, we were denied our rooms...but THEY KEPT OUR MONEY. WE WERE DENIED A REFUND. Yes, I booked a non-refundable room. But it's not like we didn't show up, or display any behavior that might say to a hotel that we would not be safe and responsible guests. And Hotels.com was no help and persuading the management of this establishment in providing a refund. All they said was, "We can change your wife's name on the reservation". With the low level of customer service that we had received that at point, considering it was after midnight, we had just driven for HOURS, and could get ANY TYPE of consideration or courtesy...WHY WOULD WE STAY THERE??? MANAGEMENT wouldn't even take the situation under consideration, and denied a refund.
So basically, this hotel denied us boarding for the night, yet took our money. Stole it really. Fantastic customer service from these people. Probably decendants of the people who denied Mary & Joseph on the night Jesus was born.
DON'T STAY HERE. There are other places in Columbus that will take you. We found one, and my wife didn't need to get out of the car.

We needed a place for our family to stay near OSU and this was awesome!  Having the Crimson Cup in the lobby made it even better because in the morning we were able to go and get delicious lattes .. I also was impressed with how close the hotel was to OSU and plenty of other areas near downtown columbus.

After making my reservation for 3 nights, I read a review titled “Never stay here” and had 2 thoughts. “Oh No” and “but surely it can’t be that bad”. Well, after staying I discovered Yes it actually is that bad !
The room wasn’t clean when I checked in & had questionable liquid stains on a couple of the tables that I wiped up myself with a towel thinking I’d get a change of towels. 

During my 3 night stay, there was no housekeeping whatsoever nor any new towels brought in. It was advertised as 100% smoke free but I smelled smoke in my room & saw numerous people sitting on their door step or standing right outside their door smoking. When walking around looking for a working ice machine, a few of them talked to me with the exact same complaints about this place. 

At a little over $100/night with taxes & fees, this place’s only benefits are it’s location and the fact the better inns close by are sometimes already full. They sure take advantage of the situation too with the employees bad attitude & unwillingness to even attempt to be pleasant or helpful. Even if it was only $19/night, I’d still rather just stay in my wifes’s hospital room at the James overnight 😮

Never stay here ! Never !

I had to stay here 4 days; I did not know this is such a terrible place. The room is not clean, no housekeeping, the room do not have proper lighting. There was an internet problem when I checked in. They assured that they will solve it, and they did not. They could not solve a basic internet issue for 4 days!!! Basically, they do not care and work. They just playing with their phones. Stay away, this is a trash place.

We stayed two nights at the Varsity Inn Columbus and Gerard at the front desk was very friendly and helpful. He gave us a recommendation on a wonderful place to eat and helped us with walking directions multiple times. He even checked back in with us later to see how it went. Would recommend staying here!

Great Customer Service

We went to check in with our reservation and was told they oversold, even after we talked right to a Varsity Inn worker saying we could come check in at any point, but then when we went to check in our room was gone. We notice 3 others turned away as we were trying to find another hotel on game day at 11:30 pm. They could have cared less and we ended up finding a room 20 miles away after almost giving up and sleeping in our car as noticed some other had made that choice. Do not count on your reservations being there for you. Stay somewhere else!!!!!

This hotel is well kept and managed. The rooms 1q clean and comfortable.  There are no bugs or unwanted animals . I have stayed at the varsity Inn multiple months at a time and the staff is 
Caring and  A grade . I wc cill always sray at the Varsiry Inn south osu. It's where my family stays when visiting Columbus. Very down to earth hands on management. Looking for guest satisfaction and safety instead of most places don't take the time or effort to make a better stay. Reasonable prices along with quality. Friendly staff that makes sure they know your name. Check it out for your next stay. Thank you

Only place that is equal to home!!

I have been here 1 year now an they r always nice to me an my boys never mean when u need something they always get it for u. I would come back here if i had to a great hotel friendly people. Keep up the good job an thank u

Varsity inn

Hotel room smelled of smoke.  Smoke detector was broken, carbon monoxide detector was hanging from the ceiling by a wire, toilet seat had hair,  dead insect on the bathroom floor.   

Manager refused to issue a refund after I checked in despite not remaining in the room.  That's ok - you screwed me, and I have exercised every avenue to cause you problems that are FAR worse.    You  have no clue what's coming.  Just remember, Mr. Manager:  YOU decided to make this difficult.

AVOID

This is not a hotel. This is a spot used by hundreds of local gays to have sex in the rooms and the parking lot. This is located by a place called Club Columbus, which is a gay sex hookup spot in disguise as a "gym". Those of you leaving bad reviews because the rooms are dirty, or you hear knocking all night, or a lot of men headed to one room...that is not drug deals and protitutes, that is the type of decay that happens when local gay men choose a place for all of their activities to take place. Hundreds of guys show up each night to have sex with each other in the rooms and parking lot. The staff can't possibly control it at this point. The cops don't care when they're battling gay public hookups at the local parks (yeah where kids play and stuff, those have become other hookup places).
Just avoid this hotel. It is not for normal people.
