Oh dear. We quite enjoyed our stay here and, whilst the accommodation is very basic and the general feel of the place a tad creepy (all those weird statues and other random paraphernalia scattered about), the room was clean and there were nice views from the back. There are copious 'rules' and 'policies' all over the walls, which made us giggle a bit - like that scene in one of the Harry Potter films with the nasty female headmistress who has all those 'decrees' hammered in to the wall! However, the security deposit wasn't returned and George, the owner, claims that we broke the wall in the shower enclosure. He says that it looks as if it's been kicked in at knee height. We're two middle aged women who always leave our accommodation at least as clean as we found it and find this absolutely ridiculous - we'd have noticed if we'd come in to contact with a wall with sufficient force to break it, especially whilst naked!!! Think we'd also notice the medical bills for the injuries... so George (or his wife's) lying. Suspect it's both. They obviously do this quite a lot, based on the reviews I've read today on TripAdvisor. Bit sad, really, as he says he's down over 100 bookings this year - I wonder why??!! Might try not lying about customers in order to steal their money. Oh, and don't insult them via email or on your facebook page - also not great for business, I'd think.

I note in one response to a review, George says he retained the deposit because the guest didn't hang around for their 'inspection'. Didn't realise guests were expected to be on George's schedule - perhaps he should reconsider his career choices - prison guard might be more suited to him??

Oh, and despite repeated requests for some photographic evidence of our 'breakage', nothing received so far. He'll probably come up with something, but we know we didn't break his shower wall. We've now left it up to Booking.com and my credit card provider to sort out - I refuse to deal with his aggressive emails and insults anymore.

AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!!

The suite was cold and damp. Owner not pleasant. Access not good. Not enough parking. Would not recommend staying here. So many other, more acceptable places. Less expensive, but you definitely get what you pay for.

Poor stay

Place looks run down.  Owner was not nice.  Pool was ver cold.  Owner not likely to return your cleaning deposit no matter what you  do to clean your room. We cannot recommend this place.  Anywhere else in town will almost certainly be better.

Not nice at all

This place is a real dump. It is like staying in a junkyard.

Worst, the owner is like a junkyard, dog… Loud, angry, and mean.

The place is really rundown.

South Dakota is really beautiful. And the people are very nice and friendly. 

But not this place.

And not this owner.

You can do better… A lot better.

Terrible place and awful owner

We stayed in a cabin here from Sept 8 thru Sept 12, 2022. It was a great stay, cabin was roomy and clean. Had everything we needed for a comfortable trip. The cabin was clean and had everything we needed to enjoy a few days in the Hills. Location is great, There are rules posted, but nothing different than I do in my own house.  We had a great stay, and will definitely be back.

Great place to stay!!

Accommodations were acceptable, but the owner was the rudest person I have ever encountered in my entire life. Any extra amenities cost extra. Owner laughed in our faces when we asked where to park. Overpriced for the quality of cabins. Would not recommend to my worst enemy. Absolutely horrible hospitality.

If you want to have a good time, DONT DO IT HERE!

Do not stay here. The location is great, cabins are sparse but acceptable but if anything goes wrong in your cabin, its your fault and the owner becomes hostile, verbally abusive and honestly scary. We should have called law enforcement on him. He gives South Dakota a bad name. STAY AWAY.

Stay away

We loved our cabin at George and Jocelyn's place.  Not fancy, but clean and comfortable.  The location is terrific - although it's on the highway, the evenings are very quiet.  The views are spectacular.  We enjoyed the sunrises and sunsets, and watching a pair of mountain bluebirds feed their young. We've stayed in a lot of places, and George's kitchen was the best.  Apartment-sized range and fridge, nice pots and pans, nice dishes, plenty of everything.  Even had a whisk and cheese grater.  Grill included, laundry facilities, and George loaned us some aluminum foil. If you want fancy, you won't like it, but we thought it was very comfortable and a good value.  We had no problems with the cleanup.  George just doesn't want people trashing his place.

We loved staying here.  It's rustic, but has everything you need.

Place was run down.

Owner was surly and mean.

Otherwise everything was great.

Just kidding. Avoid this place.  Cabins are not well maintained and the surroundings are like a junk yard.  Worst of all is the owner who has a very bad disposition and will not refund your cleaning deposit, no matter what you do to clean your room before you leave.

Great amenities; great location; Beware - if there's any issue in your cabin, it's your fault and you'll be verbally attacked and abused  by the owner.  Complete rip-off.   We should've called the cops on him.  He gives SD and the beloved Black Hills a bad name.
