Probably one of the coolest hotels I’ve been to! If you’re looking for Vegas style places, this isn’t it, it’s deadwood. The elevator is the coolest thing I’ve ever seen and the room feels like you’re in the 1800s. It really sets the deadwood vibe. Seriously check this place out if you want an authentic deadwood experience!

Super Cool and Rustic!

This place is filthy, stinky, and is so badly in need of updating. I turned the water on in the sink, and it sprayed all over me, and the pressure was very low. We had a window air conditioning, but it didnt keep it cool in our room, and our room was very small. Everything is dirty=we didnt even use the shower, because it looked so nasty. The owner is not at all friendly, and never smiles. I will never stay here again, and i wouldnt recomend anyone to waste your money by staying there. Im not even sure the place is worthy of a 1 star,. The only thing that was descent was the location. Wont be going there again!!!!!!

dont waste your money

I am very sad to have to write such a negative review. I stayed here in 2011 and just recently again in 2020 but it sadly will be my last time. It's unfortunate but this place has really gone downhill and Mary was not pleasant as a host.

Room: These are in major need of an update. They are no longer charming but simply dated. The beds are worn out. The bedding was old. The furniture was straight out of 1990. The faucets were hard to get water to the right temp and were lacking in power. There are window air conditioning units that did work well and keep it cool for sleeping. They provide soap, shampoo and conditioner. 

Cleanliness: This was lacking - bad. The back of the bathroom door had stuff all over it. The walls were scuffed. The decor had dust on it.  It was gross.

Kitchenette: Half of the outlets didn't work so you couldn't run the coffee pot and the microwave at the same time. Also, there are hardly any outlets for charging  your devices. There are a handful of mismatched dishes and silverware as well as dish soap and paper towels. A pint sized fridge, microwave and coffee maker and coffee is also provided.

Otis elevator: The best thing about this place. But it was filthy. Yes, it's slow, but it's cool. Just don't look at any of the ledges in the shaft.

Check in:  Our room wasn't ready for nearly two hours past check in time of 3 p.m. But Mary didn't seem to care at all. She wasn't apologetic but eventually did offer us a free drink.

Antique store: Mostly junk-- and dusty junk. Was hoping it would be charming but really wasn't. the roped off area with sex toys was a nice touch - it said not to enter if you were underage, but a kid could stand there and still see everything as it was fully open to site.

Bar:  No liquor. Only beer and seltzer that I could see. There was a sweet girl working hard and helping out temporarily. Also, they will only give you half a bucket of ice a day.

Restaurant: They run out of food quickly so if you want to eat, hurry and grab your meal - not that there is a selection. We didn't eat here but several people were disappointed when they came to eat and food wasn't available.

Breakfast: This was supposed to be provided daily. I know that COVID is a factor so it's takeout - an individually boxed muffin/pastry, fruit cup and yogurt. That's totally fine, but at least one day, no one opened up to give it to you. So while it is part of your rate, you may or may not receive it. 

Outside seating area: It's nice as long as you don't want to sit outside past 6 p.m.  That's when they pull in the chairs and close. Sometimes even earlier than that when "someone gets mad and leaves".

Parking:  Good luck. There is no rhyme or reason. The spots aren't striped so people take up multiple spots and others who aren't staying at the hotel also park there. There is no enforcement and no guarantee of a spot, even though it's supposed to be provided.

Location:  Awesome location. Walkable and not too loud.

Mary: She was much more delightful when I met her in 2011. It's like she has given up and doesn't care.  If you ask her how she is, she answers "tired".  You won't get a smile out of her. Someone please buy this place and put her out of her misery.

Overall, there is no pride in this place. It's a beautiful building that needs to be gutted and re-done and most importantly - needs a major cleaning. I talked to a few people like me who had stayed there before and were just as disappointed by the whole experience. The worst part was we paid over $300/night for something that wasn't worth $50/night.

Won't stay here again

Slept great.  Not noisy.  On 4th floor so nice view of the hillside town.  Lots of work was put into this building a number of years ago to bring it up to standards that are quite acceptable if you are not looking for super modern

Very rustic.  Elevator is a fun ride if you are not in a  hurry.

I really wanted to like this hotel. It is old and historical, but there is little else that this property has to offer. The check in desk is inside an antique shop, which is only open until 6pm. If you arrive late, you have to call a number on the door for someone to come to you outside. If it is raining, that is a problem. The rooms are on the 3rd and 4th floor, small rooms, clean enough, wifi good, but all furnishings are old, our room needed painting and upgrades, molding in shower looked worn, woodwork scratched. The Otis elevator is from the 1800s, works fine but it takes getting used to. Room service forgot us one day, so we had to call on our cell phones to get additional coffee and a towel. No ice machine. Refrigerator and microwaves in room. Small airconditioner in rooms which is needed on 4th floor even though it is cool at night. The saloon was not open during our stay, but you can walk to other places from here. Parking is either on side of building or in back of property. Building is for sale. My concern at this hotel is the access to a fire escape. I did not see one.  I would spend my $ next time on something a little more upgraded with amenities such as restaurant close, gambling, coffee shop, common areas, etc..

Old and tired, no amenities, good location

My room was on the 4th floor, and the only way up was the stairs or an ancient otis elevator. If someone doesn't get the elevator door closed properly, you have to climb the stairs. 
There was no kitchenette in my room. 
The bar and restaurant were not open. 
The woman running the place was NOT very friendly. 
I would definitely recommend staying somewhere else.

Run down and not worth the money

Had a room booked for 2 nights, had trouble from the start! What a makeshift run operation! Walked in the door and right back out! stay somewhere else, if you have any trouble walking or climbing stair.s

Walked in, walked out!

We are history buffs and this certainly was the place for us. We loved it. The elevator was a trip but it added to the charm of the place. I loved the winding hallways and the unique rooms. We had the perfect room with a little kitchenette that came in very handy. We are trying to make plans to return.

This Place was Great!

The people that we made the reservation with were very nice and the room was clean but it was on 4th floor with an 1869 elevator that I was scarred to ride up in.  I had to climb for flights of stairs to the room.  There was no where to eat on the propetry so had to make several trips up and down those stairs.  No gambling on the property so more trips up and down those stairs to the main street of Deadwood which was over a block away.  I would not stay there again.

Gambling Trip

Please do NOT stay at this hotel. I made this reservation online 2 months prior to stay. 10 days prior to stay I tried to call and cancel as my husband was called away for his military job and we were unable to come. She told me she couldn’t help me as it was booked online. I went through my online booking and sent a request for cancellation and heard nothing back. 3 days prior to my stay I tried calling again and was told she was out of town  and wouldn’t be back until the day before our reservation so she couldn’t help me. She stated she would call me back on Friday. Reservation was for Saturday night. I did not here back so today, Friday, I called back and she told me that she would not refund my money. That she did get cancellation request 10 days ago but because she was out of town she didn’t see it so would not refund our stay. I am so frustrated with the customer service at Deadwood Dicks. I hope no one else has to go through this!  If you cannot be hospitable you should not be in the hospitality business...PERIOD!
