Stayed for 3 days recently as we were in town for a wedding.  Waiting to check in, listened to desk clerk telling another guest checking in to either go buy Shorts and a tank top to use the pool as she didn't bring a bathing suit or just swim in her underwear?  That was my first clue. 

. The hotel is dated, yes but there are things that are very basic that can be done to improve quality.  Like cleaning.   Like replacing worn towels.  It was such a dive, we kept the do not disturb sign up as I felt uncomfortable allowing any of the staff in the room when we were not there.  
Towels were dingy yellow, thin and had holes. Ceiling was stained with mildew. Sink and tub simply needed a good scrub but obviously that has not been done for ages and the shower head? Slimy black mold. The king size bed had three tiny standard pillows that were so old, they had no shape and were flat.  Mattress was rock hard. Carpet was filthy.  
Stay away.

Dated and Filthy

Dated facility, but it was clean, friendly staff, and a quiet stay for one night while my kid was in camp. Not fancy by any means--- but functional, clean, safe place to stay if you are in Deerwood. Much better than driving all the way to Milaca or Brainerd.

Great value and convenient location

So really, if you are traveling with a dog and want to stay around Aitkin, there aren't a whole lot of choices. In the summer, all of the places around Garrison and Lake Mille Lacs are booked; even in the week. We started looking early this year and couldn't find any weekend openings. There wasn't room for us at the cabin, so we popped over to Deerwood which is only 15 minutes west of Aitkin. Incidentally, if you're from far away and your sojourn is down or up U.S. Highway 169 in Northern Minnesota, this is a quick place to stop for the night; nothing fancy, just a place to sleep. The place was actually fairly clean, not perfect, but they have been working on the place. I think somebody said something about the mattresses having plastic covers on them under the sheets. They do. It's weird, but who knows what the heck goes on in hotels. The breakfast isn't much, but there is a little restaurant just a block or two away that we failed to try. It's not open very late, FYI. There is a Holiday Station Gas place about 100 feet away and a good place to fill up. This is a fisher person's paradise. It looks like they just got all new mattresses as evidenced by the old ones piled outside our window. They just painted a lot of it and the trim wasn't all back on our room yet. The bathrooms are just bathrooms with the standard creme colored single unit shower and bathtub. Bring your own conditioner if you need it cause the shampoo and soap are kinda stingy. There's a gravel lot on the west side of the building if you need more room to park your boat or RV

A dog friendly mecca where there are few hotels.

Dirty and smells bad.  When you ask a questions, you get many different answers.  Breakfast in the AM is very very limited, and nothing works like toaster and pancake machine.  Everyone left upset in and made comments about awful food.  Bedding is old and dirty.  Tried to get hot water 4 times during the day and only got kinda warm water.  Towels are worn and old.
Would not recommend.

Advise against staying

The Room was not that great and watching for trains against those RVs they shouldn’t been outta the way and the shower is not great not bath towels ice machine was broke and no refrigerator and they need to fix something like ice machine all that

beds were rock hard - the only coverings on the bed was a thin sheet and the thinnest blanket (if you could call it that) - it's the middle of winter for crying out loud!  The walls are paper thin - my poor teenage daughter was mortified by the couple next door - no explanation necessary.....  To the couple with the kids also staying there - the halls are not a running track!  Be courteous of others!  I cannot attest to the breakfast, but by the looks of it - no thanks - I'd go hungry before I touched it.  

Beware!

The rooms smell like mold and are damp, the ceilings are streaked with brown and black, upon checking the bathrooms had hair in the tub and a mess around the sink. 

When refilling the hard boiled eggs, the staff member came out with them in her bare hands and used her fingers to place them in the refrigerator. Just disgusting. 

It is clear this privately owned facility has a hands-off owner and he’s just raking in the money without any improvements or decent cleanliness. Stay ANYWHERE other than this hotel. A little longer drive is well worth it. 

The worst

Website doesn't work so I called the hotel to book a room for two nights; a Friday and a Saturday. The receptionist never told me about the weekend rate that is over double the weekday rate. I found out later the receptionist only booked us for one night. Someone affiliated with the hotel attempted to contact me when we didn't check out Saturday morning, but it was hours after check-out time. No phone message was left and when I called back multiple times, there was no answer and I could not leave a message. I checked my bank statement and discovered I was billed an amount over double the normal rate. When I confronted the staff, they said nothing could be done, even though it was clearly their mistake. If I knew about the outrageous weekend rates, I would have booked an entire house through AirBnB, which would have been cheaper than staying at this cheesy place. As seen in the pictures, the molding in the bathroom was never finished, the chair was ready to fall apart, and the hairdryer did not work. That's what I paid $323 for one night! Do yourself a favor and look for a AirBnB. These people could have made things right but refused. Don't stay here!

BEWARE!!! PRICE GOUGING ON WEEKENDS!!

Nice location for our event.  Check in was a very nice woman.  The room was basic but clean.  Bed linens are sparse- not really a bed cover more like a couple of sheets.  Pool and hot tub were nice.  Breakfast was extemely basic and of course people sat around in the limited space and played with their phones so we took our meager food offerings back to the room.  No one a front desk for check out.  This place is clean and nice for the area but extremely overpriced.

Adequate for our stay

After a three-night stay in May 2020, my credit card was charged for a night's stay again in May 2021. Numerous calls to unhelpful staff and an elusive manager with no results. Stay here at your own risk.
