The woman at the front desk would not permit a 4 year old child to use the lobby restroom. Guest or not, to deny a child the use of a restroom is very poor behavior and does not reflect well on your business. 

Terrible front desk

The Garland hotel is the best hotel in the world it's a home in Ohio. very good service and very nice rooms.very good breakfast.very nice pool. Very clean. very good bathroom and a very nice atmosphere and very good TV and Free Wi-Fi. Very good 

The Garland hotel is the best hotel 

Trying to be a boutique experience. Bizarre flashy tree in lobby gave warning. There was no one to check us in , though she was trying to set up for a conference alone. There is no breakfast ( they blamed Covid,but many have grab and go items) or pool as advertised. Minor dings for undersized TV Across from the bed, 2 uncomfortable high top chair and I odd chair left no comfortable seating option for lounging except the bed. Also, only decaf in the room and sad paper products in n the bathroom. Worst offense was no hot water, we called around 9, checked out at noon and maintenance wasn’t even there yet. No apology or discount offered. Bed was nice. If you stay ask for the side not facing the highway, it never slowed down and was very loud.

Not as advertised

We stayed for one night and had an enjoyable stay. The rooms were huge and the balcony was an added bonus. The beds were comfortable, different firmness in pillows was offered. The breakfast included was a brown bag with large muffin, granola bar, cookie and water. They also have coffee and juice available. The  day staff could use more training in customer service. The front desk attendant was eating her breakfast and seemed annoyed when my daughter asked her a question. Beautiful location just off 270.

Nice stay.

We stayed for 4 nights in August. The room was spacious, clean and quiet. The halls are exceptionally wide. The thermostat worked well. Everything else was pretty bad. It has a very modern decor, which struck us as being very cold. Pretty much everything was grey except for splashes of blue paint. The front desk staff over the 4 night stay had 2 people that did not speak unless spoken to. They were focused on their phones. Neither one even greeted us when we entered or left. One woman was very nice and friendly.  Upon check in we asked what time breakfast ended and were told 10 am. When we went downstairs the next morning we were given a bag with a vending machine quality blueberry muffin, a cheap granola bar and a package of chocolate chip cookies! Not what we expected at all. All due to covid, but we were not informed ahead of time. When we returned to our room later that day, housekeeping had not come. We spoke to the front desk who told us we had to fill out the green hangtag in our room. There were none in our room. So we filled it out and hung it on the door the nest morning. When we returned we found a basket with towels and coffee supplies. We checked all the boxes to get our room cleaned and toilet paper, but no toilet paper, nor cleaning. The next day we tried again. No toilet paper, nor cleaning. We finally called and asked for toilet paper and were told they were not cleaning room due to covid. So no sheets changed... The mattress had seen better days and needed to be replaced. The shower had very low water pressure. There was only one ice machine and it was on the 5th floor; also strange. There's just a weird vibe in this hotel. I called it the Twilight Zone Hotel because we never saw anyone even though we were told the hotel was sold out.  My husband said it was the Stepford Hotel because except for the one front desk woman, no one spoke. Very strange experience and we have traveled widely. The carpet in hotel common areas was stained and I saw piles of dirt on the hotel stairs that were never cleaned while I was there. Pool was empty. It feels like the place has been abandoned. We have traveled the US and the globe extensively and this was the strangest place I've ever stayed.

Clean quiet room - everything else was disappointing

Stayed here for one night with my family of 4. It appeared to be a newer hotel. Check in was quick and easy. The pool was closed, not even filled with water, but we knew that when booking. There’s not much close by.  The ice machine on our level wasn’t working. The room was a great size. Plenty of room to move around, which is great with little kids. Same with the bathroom, toilet paper holder was broken but not a big deal. Beds were more on the firm side. The room looked and felt clean. My one complaint of the rooms is that there were no usb plugs. Not even the clock had one. Overall there wasn’t anything that shouted out special about this hotel but a great price  for a quick one night stay.

Good price

On Wed July 14, 2021 my wife and I checked into the hotel.   We went to our room and my wife was going to get ice. When she opened the ice bucket there was a moldy sandwich in the bucket along with a potatoe chip bag,. (the only ice machine that was available was on the 5th floor) We complained to the desk and got a different bucket.
We gave the hotel the benefit of doubt we thought the problem was just a fluke anyone can make a mistake. 
On our return on July 17, 2021 we stayed again and had two rooms, one room was OK , but the other room had a few live and dead bugs, roaches and gnats, a dirty TV remote(looked like pizza sauce) and really dirty carpet. I have pictures of the bugs, the dirty carpet and the dirty TV remote controil. Did not learn about the problems until we were on the road the next day.  It seems as though the cleaning needs a lot more attention. I would think that both the cleaning and the bugs need to be addressed.  This is not COVID cleaning.

Disappointed

We picked this hotel because of the pool. My granddaughters were looking forward to swimming. The pool was closed. Also only one working ice machine for the five floors. Lights in kitchen did not work when I told them about the faulty lights I was told the bulbs were burnt out and they have no new bulbs. Looks like they decided not to put any money in to the place. Pass on this place

They are letting this place run down.

I recently made a reservation for my family to stay for the night. When we arrived the receptionist said I did not have a reservation. I pulled up my email and showed her the reservation confirmation number. She responded with we are overbooked, we do not have a room to stay at. She offered up calling around the area to try to find another hotel. There was no apology or offering of any services in the future. Two days later I noticed my card was charged for that stay. I called the hotel and explained the error and they said there is nothing we can do from the hotel, you need to call choice corporate. When I called choice they kept putting me on hold saying they need to call the hotel. I was on the phone with both of them an hour and a half. They said there is no way to get the money back and referred us to a third party billing company. This was the worst hotel experience of my life and I have had thousands of stays. There was zero service and accountability. The reservation says I have prepaid for a fully guaranteed room. The room wasn't there and they stole my money. I will have to go through my bank to dispute the charge. I will never be booking a choice hotel again.

They overbooked themselves

Wow! I think I've conservatively stayed in hotels maybe 2,000 nights over my lifetime. The worst were crazy-bad...but this was a first -- or a last. Just when I thought I'd seen it all, the Garland surprised me. If there are circles of Hell for hotels, the Garland would have one all its own.

As we pulled off I-70, we drove up their road, with its pole flags reading "Welcome to Garland Commons," we saw that the Garland seemed to have its own windmill! Whoa. Cool. The mountains of dirt in back suggested more major development to come. A resort? Conference center? Millions clearly had already been invested. For a right-by-the-highway place, this was insanely impressive. And the soaring lobby, with its soaring spaces and wonderful light, suggested an experience a quantum leap above an interstate hotel. 

And then it began. 

It was 5:12. Turned out that the person at the desk had left at the end of her shift at 5...even though her replacement hadn't shown up. So, no one to check people in at a time when people start checking in. So the woman behind the desk is now Saint Susan: a housekeeper. Who knew as much about check-in procedures as I do about coding nuclear warhead trajectories.

Now, this could maybe happen in a $39-a-night motel in East St. Louis (w/ apologies to East St. Louis.) Never once happened ever to me in 45 years until we checked into the Garland, one of high-end Ascend's jewels. But records are made to be broken!

To get to the point: With a phone in each ear taking instructions from distant instructors on how to make this check-in happen, it took Susan an hour and 12 minutes for us to finally get into the room, which happened because she used her housekeeper's key. We took one of the two elevators that were in operation to get there. A few minutes later, Susan showed up with coded keys that worked. My guess is that Susan could run this company better than whoever is actually trying to do it. 

For a multimillioned corporation to spend so much money on glitzy infrastructure and completely ignore the people factor in the equation represents everything wrong with this company. Inexcusable. Awful. Irresponsible. Showing total disdain for the people who spend dollars to let them rip us off. Laughing in our face.

But once in our room, I was glad to be able to take a shower, and wash off all the frustration and helpless anger, and then I reached up to adjust the shower head...to see that the fixture was already pulling away from the sheetrock. Was I surprised to see that their contractors were as bad at building a hotel as everything else doing work for these people except Saint Susan?

Good lord. Shame on you, Ascend. Just shame. I wish I could say good luck with your venture. Not. I hope your bankruptcy is painful.
