Lovely location right on the water! But it's very tired and dingy; needs some updates and freshening up. We've stayed here twice before in years prior, and it wasn't in this state of disrepair. Toilet was black, peeling wallpaper, broken shutters, broken safety door latch. Room and linens appeared clean; courteous front desk staff. Sadly, we'll probably not return.

A Bit Tired

Good grief. I don’t know where to start. It seems we had the same room as another reviewer. Could not see the beautiful view because the picture window was clouded over between the glass panes.  The Carpet looked like it came out of a truck stop bathroom. Horrible smell in the room. We asked for another room, the young woman at the desk was very nice and we moved a couple doors down. This room was about the same but at least we could see out the window. We would have tried another place but we’re just too tired after driving all day and weren’t up to all the hassles. My impression is that the owners are squeezing the most profit they can out of this dying old mess of a place before it’s shoved down. 

Horrible

We went up for our Anniversary and were wowed by the view from the room (Last one, first floor, lakeside). Very clean, strong water pressure in shower/tub. Very quiet; unable to hear the bathroom fan in the bedroom area if the door was closed. Big plus for me! Enjoyed the available Keurig coffeemaker, although we brought our own pods, because we are coffee snobs.  Most places were closed, because, winter/Monday. Would stay here again. The owners are very accommodating, and live onsite. There is a firepit, but looks like it's only used in warmer weather. 

Enchanting.

The lakeside room had an amazing view. We spent hours just looking at it. The hotel was super quiet. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. The hotel was clean and comfortable. Overall, it was a great stay and well above expectations. 

Well Above Expectations

The bathroom fan was very noisy. We were pleasantly surprised to have breakfast all day long. Plus it was good! Our room needed a carpet shampooing, but we will be back 
next year because the staff and lake view are great. The property is convenient to restaurants and shops.

Good stay

The staff was pleasant and while the breakfast was not all that abundant in choices, the snacks they put out were great. I did come across a moldy muffin. There is no bottled water sold on site, but was able to get some from front desk. There is no AC, so only way to cool your room is to open your window and use a fan to bring air in. Which works great, unless there is someone smoking outside your window. Property is advertised as smoke free, but sign on front door directs smokers to back deck, which was right next to our lower level room. Fan + window + smoke = stinky room. Window, window well, and bathroom floor all had cracks. Tub surround was a hodgepodge of painted tile, messy caulk, and rusty grout. Carpet was grungy and spattered with paint. Exterior needed work, but location and deck view was great. 

Busiest weekend of the year, or we would have gone somewhere else right then and there. Won't be back.

Staff wonderful, room not.

We enjoy staying at this smaller hotel but if you are looking for all the amenities chose another hotel. The view out the back patio is wonderful. It is peaceful and quiet. You can walk along the beach behind the hotel. There is no elevator in the hotel. They have continental breakfast. The staff is wonderful and friendly. There are refrigerators in the rooms but no microwave or coffee pot. Microwave, coffee and tea station downstairs which was nice and available 24/7.

Great views

The location in Grand Marais is great,  right on the lake. However, we couldn't see the lake from our window because it had some kind of film on it! There is no air conditioning, which isn't usually necessary in Grand Marias, except it was quite stuffy, and only one small window opened up. The furniture and carpet were highly outdated. The smell of plug-ins or some kind of air freshener was overpowering in the hallways, begging the question, "What odors were they trying to cover up?"  We love Grand Marais and have stayed in many adorable places, but this is not one of them. I would not stay there again, even if it was our only choice (which it was, even though we booked months ago!)

Great location... and that's about it!

First, you can’t beat the location. Right on the lake, a stone throw away from several shops and restaurants. Such a quaint little area! The hotel is old and dated, but everything was clean. Comfortable bed. The manager was on front desk duty and she was very helpful. It’s quiet and we had a lake view room which was lovely.  It’s “shoulder season” in May so the hotel was down to one one boiler, it was a bit chilly in the evening, but an extra blanket and a modern space heater provided by the front desk took care of it and we were very comfortable. Nothing but the sound of waves crashing  on  the shore could be heard at night.  Slept like a rock.

Great service and location.

Nice place, enjoyed our stay. Clean rooms, nice staff. Quiet for sleeping and cozy for meeting and visiting with new acquaintances. Plan on many return trips and longer stays. Staff helpful on restaurant selection.
