This hotel is fantastic!    The owner, Jeff, could not have been more welcoming and accommodating.   The hotel is fabulously quirky and unique.    Every room is different.  There were 13 of us and everyone loved it. We spent 10 nights in three different Alaska towns and our two nights in Haines was the highlight of the trip.    The hotel offers everything you need - comfy beds, good internet and 24 hour coffee!!   It’s not fancy, but it is the perfect Alaska hotel.   

Highlight Of Our Trip

The Halsingland is a bit funky and old-fashioned, but it does fit in well with its old Fort Seward setting and it is comfortable.  The rooms are spacious, the beds firm (and I slept well), the bath clean, the water hot and the towels fluffy and warm.  The location is central, a 2-3 block walk to the center of Haines, with a fine unobstructed view across the open old parade field looking down to the harbor and on to mountains across the ocean segment that locals call the Canal.
I’ve stayed at the Halsingland three times, one night each over a three-year period.  The staff have always been friendly and exceptionally helpful with information about restaurants, museums, and their own favorite activities in the town.  The restaurant in the hotel is also good, although it’s always been nice to get out to some of the other eating options around town.  Breakfast coffee is plentiful as are the excellent pastries that come with it.

fine place to stay

This may have been the number one hotel in town but it surely isn’t any more. No elevator to the upper floors. The heating was not working and the paint came of the wall. Mold near the bathroom. The positive thing to mention was the staff that was very helpful when cancelling the room after 15 Min. 

It’s over

Clean shower, comfy bed, great front desk services and recommendations for local eats. Fresh coffee and pastry in the AM. An Affordable and historic stay...All of our needs met. Thank you Halsingland!!!

Halsingland

The hotel is quaint and historical and we would’ve liked it more but we arrived on a very hot day and there is no a/c in the rooms. Our room was so hot and no screens on the windows so couldn’t open them without mosquitoes getting in. Luckily we were able to get a fan but it just made the room tolerable. We left as soon as we woke up to get outside.  This would be a great place and we would stay again in the spring, late fall, or winter.  All the staff was wonderful. Plenty of parking and a big field across the street for our dog to run around.

Nice place but hot

This hotel is a building with loads of character, set in a square of former housing for officers in the fort.  If you remember the series, it's a little like stepping onto the set of 'Murder She Wrote', or even the type of 'creepy house on the hill' that would feature in every Scooby Doo episode!!!  Geoff, the manager was great and very welcoming.

However, the room was a bit small and tired, with no facilities to make tea or coffee.  The restaurant wasn't open, so we ate at a place down the road (the Fireweed) which was great, and full of locals.  Breakfast was very limited to Danish and coffee - tea had to be made in a microwave.  All in all, a little pricey for what you get.

Interesting place but a little tired

Set right on the parade grounds of former Fort Seward, this was the Officers Quarters.  Nothing fancy, but comfortable,  quiet.  Easy walk into main street Haines. Friendly staff, small but nice gift shop.

Historic hotel

We just spent a week at the Halsingland Hotel in Haines the last week of September 2018. Our host Jeff was super & most accommodating to our group of 6 needs. The hotel was built in the early 1900’s so its character is in the look and feel from the time you check in to the halls you walk down to the comfortable/simple rooms you stay in. 

The scenery around the community of Haines stunning in the fall and you get a sense the town itself is starting to wind down from all its summer visitors. If you wait till October to go you will probably miss a chance to stay at this historic hotel as operations wind down for the season and many of the local businesses close or reduce hours for the approaching winter season. If you like to fish, bike, hike or just tour (see the grizzlies fishing for salmon) you should consider Haines Alaska as one of your fall stops.

Great place to go fishing

The Halsingland Hotel is full of charming character and provides a glimpse into life at Ft. Seward for the Commander of the fort. Our room was spacious and comfortable, giving us a chance to relax and get a good night's sleep. The meals were truly special--we had the best salmon feast of our lives! The owners are gracious and hospitable, eager to make our stay enjoyable. The hotel is also well located to explore the town of Haines and enjoy vistas over the harbor and surrounding mountains.
