I rely on reviews for the safety & comfort of my family. At booking, not many reviews, & a lot of availability. However, could tell from pictures that rooms were recently renovated. We were happily rewarded with quiet, comfortable, accommodations that felt like home away from home. This is a family owned & run place. Inn keepers went above & beyond when we needed something. Wife & daughter used pool several times and met awesome people (families) at the pool. Our car AC went out half way through trip in triple digit heat a quarter of the way through Kansas, and they offered info on several options for repair in the area.  With it being 4th of July weekend, and the mild temperatures in South Dakota, we decided to wait till we got to a major city with a dealership. Inn keepers regularly talked with guests in the mornings.  Coolest thing was a wooden map of the US on the wall with pins of where their guests visited from. They take a genuine interest in their guests.

When we arrived, the place was fully booked.  One of our next door neighbors were so quiet, we thought they were out and about and that it was odd they had their shoes on the porch.  They were that quiet.  Other neighbors were only heard during the day.  Close to road, but we never heard traffic.  My wife is ultra sensitive to this, but she did not hear a peep of road noise.  The road is not as busy of a road as it looks on Google Maps.

Location was perfect - centrally located for all our destinations for this trip.

Positives = too many to count.
Negative = The bathroom had a funky smell.  

Big worry that I have is that this place will become too popular with bookings required a year in advance.     

Recommend booking directly on Lantern Inn website. Big clear agreement on refund policy. Your choice - book or not.  To me, it is reasonable.  Yes, it bites hard if something were to come up, causing us to miss out on vacation and value of staying without a refund.  However, we just prepared for that risk, knowing the agreement we made.

We will definitely stay again when we return to the area (fingers crossed that there will be availability).

Good Place, Family Perfect, Updated, Awesome Inn Keepers

We tried to cancel,they gave us the run around. Said we had to call AARP. Called them and they said it was up to the manager of this place. I will never book through AARP again. The manager said it was up to  who we. booked through. Ended up paying for 2 nights when we only stayed one. Very upsetting!!!

Best place to stay in the Hills!  It’s Centrally located to whatever adventure we want to do, the rooms are spacious and homey, & Nick and Laura are gracious hosts!  We have met so many nice people while staying there!  

Great Place to stay!

A repeat visit to the Lantern Inn and we were pleased that we came back. Friendly owners helped us secure a 2 night reservation at short notice and helped us move to a different room when we wanted to extend our stay. The Lantern Inn is clean, comfortable and good value.

Great spot in Hill City

We so enjoyed our 5 night stay while visiting the Black Hills.
Family owned and well kept motel. Our room was nicely decorated and the attention to detail was much appreciated. 
They are eager and willing to make one's visit as pleasant and enjoyable as possible. 
The property is within walking distance to the quaint mountain town of Hill City.
Looking forward to our next visit!

Relaxing in the Black Hills

The new owners have done everything right! The rooms have been updated and are clean, tastefully done and comfortable.  The property location is close to everything you'd want to do.  We had a chance to speak with the owners and they are a super nice, hard working couple.  Do not hesitate to book here.

Excellent

Wife and I stayed there for a night while on our motorcycle trip through the black hills.  It is a great place in a good location and an easy walk to local establishments. The owners are very kind and wonderful.  When we arrived without a reservation, we asked if we could have a specific room and the owner immediately cleaned and prepared it for us (it was the room cleaner’s day off)!  We will definitely stay there again next time we are back in Hill City.

Charming Motel

After posting my initial review, the owner called me and berated me over the phone to remove my one star review.  He will not refund a deposit made TWO HOURS earlier with TWO WEEKS notice over their failure to provide amenities advertised.   What used to be a really nice hotel is no more. I used to like staying there, but will not come back.

We needed a place to stay and Drew saved a room for us without even asking for our credit card #. One night turned into 3 and we even returned the next week so we could attend the Buffalo Roundup at Custer State Park. The rooms are clean and comfy and had great water pressure for showers. There’s coffee in the morning and ice always available. There were grills, hot tub and small pool. Bring your checkbook or cash if you don’t want to pay an extra % for credit card. Located near wineries, restaurant, craft beer, grocery across the street and downtown Hill City a few blocks up the road.

Hidden Gem in Hill City

We'd do it again.  We felt fortunate to find it ... clean, simple, convenient. Parking was ample and close to the room.  Folks were nice; coffee only (no breakfast).  We saw a Tesla plugged in ... we didin't need it but nice to know ... maybe someday.
We'd send our friends and relatives here.
