We stayed here for 2 nights. It's very close to lots of shops and restaurants but we did have to drive. The cottage is very nice and has a very nostalgic feel. Our room had an A/C unit, but with the ceiling fan we did not need the A/C a lot. We had our own lanai and the plantings outside provided privacy so we did not feel we were in the middle of a neighborhood. The chorus of frogs at night was very relaxing and we enjoyed spending time on our lanai. The front porch of the house is also very nice but there is a lot more noise from traffic. Matthew, the owner was not in town while we were there and breakfast has been suspended during Covid. Although he was not there, Matthew was available by email and responded quickly to any questions.

Relaxing stay in Hilo

Really enjoyed our stay at this B&B run by Matthew.  The room itself -- we stayed in the James Michener room -- is rather plain but has some nice old Hawaiian memorabilia on the walls or as other decoration.  Bathroom and shower were fine, there's this odd looking shower in a big tub in the middle of the room with a curtain that goes all the way around it --- unique, and it worked fine.  It's in a neighborhood so you feel like you're just on an ordinary street.  Room did have a balcony with a lot of greenery around and a koi pond.  He has a couple of parking places in his driveway so you can get your car off the street.  Plenty of sounds from frogs and other critters at night (maybe some pouring rain too:-)).  The real highlight here is the top notch breakfast served by Matthew -- really a highlight breakfast of our trip.  You are also just 2 to 4 blocks from a great bakery, the Farmer's Market, and a couple of restaurants.  We ate at a restuarant called Pineapples, which was pretty good.

Frogs sang a chorus of exotic sound that fit well with the lush tropical landscaping. Our private porch was great for relaxing on a very rainy day.  Michael  served a hot farm to table breakfast that we enjoyed outdoors on a porch balcony. Farm fresh scrambled eggs and ripe pineapple and papaya from his farm were so good. Michael is very accommodating as be added decaf coffee and whole grain bread for me the second day. I did appreciate his kindness. 
The bed was comfortable. The B&B is in a great central location but you feel secluded. 

Relaxing hideaway. 

I stayed here with friends at the end of a long Hawaiian vacation and it was perfect!  The rooms were so neat, clean and wonderfully themed!  Matt our host was amazing!  He provided us with recommendation, supplies even equipment to make our hikes down the lace tubes much more safe!  His home made breakfasts were wonderful and amazing coffee!  He was very accommodating to all of his guests.  I would highly recommend staying here!

The perfect B&B!

This is the perfect place to stay and experience so much that is still authentically Hawai'i.  It is near all the downtown sites of Hilo, and easy driving to see Keaukaha, Rainbow Falls, Honoli'i, the Haumaku Coast, the Volcano area.  So much.  Staying there is most pleasant, fabulous breakfast, terrific hospitality, lovely rooms surrounded by bamboo.  it feels very private, despite being in the midst of Hilo.  Can hardly wait to come back.

Hilo Homestyle

We stayed at the Hilo Bay Hale B&B during our first trip to the Big Island, and I have to say that the entire experience was wonderful. Matthew greeted us, provided fantastic fresh and filling breakfasts, and genuinely wants his guests to be comfortable. We had just come from another B&B in Volcano, and the difference between the two was night and day. We stayed in the Michener room, which was outfitted in a very charming way. Also, the temps were higher than "normal" during our visit, and we appreciated the option to use the A/C. We walked to the farmers' market, dining options, and the main downtown area. Driving to parks and other attractions was easy. We'd rebook here if we return to Hilo, and we definitely recommend this B&B to others.

Wonderful B&B, host, and location

We really enjoyed our stay here. The downstairs lava room was comfortable, with a private outdoor area (although with a few mosquitoes). A bathroom shelf or two would be helpful. Breakfasts were substantial and quite nice, served on a second floor lanai. The location was perfect for walking to restaurants and bars or for jogging along the waterfront parks. Hilo is a great location for exploring Hawaii Volcano National Park, nearby waterfalls and the excellent botanical gardens. We would welcome the opportunity to stay here again.

Great location for exploring the big island’s east coast

Stayed here last December, arriving late after an extremely long journey from London - very friendly staff, comfortable spacious room (Lava Room), delicious breakfast prepared with different thing cooked each morning as well as fresh fruit (best breakfast we had on our tour around the Hawaiin islands). Good location just a little walk out of town (uphill). Definitely recommend if you're visiting Hilo.

Lovely B&B - close to town, excellent breakfast, large room

We stayed at the Hilo Bay Hale B&B over the Holiday and it was our third stay here.  We really love the place for its location right in Hilo town.  It is only a few blocks away from the famous Farmers Market and lots of dining places around.  It is also one of the few places in Hilo that is pet friendly and allows pets to stay.  We always bring our two dogs with us when we visit so we don't have to board them while we are gone.

Their amazing breakfast is really a fine example of what a real B&B should serve.  For this stay they had fresh fruits, eggs, potatoes, breads, yogurt, juices and coffee. Everything was prepared by Carolina who was our host.  She was so accommodating and attentive.  She made an extra effort to allow us an early check in.

We will be back again when we come to visit Hilo.  Also, please note that they have a Kamaaina discount so be sure to note the request in the comments section when you book the reservation.

Another Great Stay

Hilo felt like "old Hawaii" to us, and it seemed appropriate to stay in a restored historic home while there for three nights.  Matthew, the owner was wonderful, and his homemade breakfasts were hearty and delicious.  He accommodated us on our early morning activity, and seemed to really enjoy all his guests.  The inn has a great location, not far from the farmer's market and waterfront area, with easy driveway and street parking.  

There are three guest rooms on the upper level and one in the basement, where we stayed.  It was perfect for us - spacious and cool, with a very nice slider out to a patio surrounded by lush landscaping.  Befitting the older, quirky nature of the property, the sink was a beautiful stone wash basin atop a gorgeous piece of carved wood, and the shower was spacious and airy... we met some lovely folks while there and very much enjoyed our stay.  The wifi worked great and the wall a/c unit was effective.

Note that if you are not an early morning riser, the basement accommodations would not be a great fit with the kitchen (and all the morning conversations) audible and the opaque curtains letting in the morning light.  If we stay there again, we would probably try one of the upper rooms to have access to a tub and one of the outside balconies for something different... we hope to be back!
