Rustic with beautiful garden and very convenient location near shops, botanical garden and ziplines to the north, volcano part to the south, and Mauna Loa & Kea to the west.  Breakfast every morning was delicious with fresh fruits, spam musubi, bagels. Rooms are basic and clean, no TV but had fridge for leftovers and drinks.  

Like sleeping in a rainforest

This charming treasure tucked away in lush tropical vegetation was a chance discovery that exceeded all expectations. The building itself is a little in need of some TLC but the room was clean, the bathroom fine and the beds were comfortable! The young women who staffed the front desk were terrific and full of great suggestions and ideas, so unusual to actually have a human being to interact with. 
We ate at a restaurant called Pineapples, suggested by one of the young women, it was walking distance from the hotel and had fantastic food, wonderful service and great cocktails.
We had rented a car and there was adequate free parking. We drove right around Big Island, went to South Point and watched cliff jumpers (amazing) and driving the Saddle Road from the East side to the west was the most amazing experience. We loved coming back to the hotel to listen to the chirping and humming we could hear coming in the windows. 

Four nights in paradise.

Let me start by saying the staff was excellent. Very friendly and helpful.

I arrived at night and it looked like an abandoned property if not for all the cars in the lot. They were nice enough to leave my key in a lockbox as I arrived later in the evening for check in.

Once I managed to get in the main door (which isn't marked and was a little confusing at night), the lobby was quaint and actually had a cool vibe. As you make your way to the room it gets progressively more questionable.

Past the lobby, the property could use some basic maintenance and cleaning. In the room there's no TV but it did have a large effective ceiling fan and another fan to use as well. It also had a fridge w/ freezer annnd that's about it. The room was clean on it's face but don't move any furniture or look behind anything.

I did meet a nice cat named "Pete" who asked to be let in the front door, followed us to our room and hung out with us for a while, so that was cool. The breakfast was basic with some sliced fruits and bread with coffee and fruit juice.

If you're looking for just a place to sleep for a night while you're doing something in town then I'd suggest this place due to the price but I wouldn't set it as a base of operations for an entire vacation as it lacks anything but the most basic anmenities and didn't feel like a place to come to after a long day of exploring Hilo to wind down and relax but you get what you pay for.

In hindsight I would have fought my usual cheapness, paid an extra $25 or $30 and stayed somewhere else but that's just me. Depends on what you're looking for.


Ehhh. It's a bed.

Overall an inexpensive and useful place to stay in terms of closeness to shops and restaurants (all walking distance). Breakfast is lovely and hospitality is above par.

 However, the hotel needs some maintenance. I understand that it’s a classic Hawaiian lodge but you can keep old world charm AND make the facade more appealing. The grounds need upkeep and the entrance and the parking lot need a rehaul. And probably have a removal company get rid of the collapsed and sunken old unit in the back. 

Warm and inviting, but ….

This hotel is great for the budget-minded, authentic seeking experience!  It does not have TVs or air-conditioning--very comfortable with the fans and we don't watch TV on vacation anyway!  Autumn at the front desk was so helpful and knowledgeable helping us not to miss anything in the area!  We loved the breakfast--warm croissants, bagels, and wonderful local fruits along with juice and great coffee.  Just hanging out in the open air lobby with the true Hawaiian vibe and the peacefulness will never be forgotten!

Authentic and Unique

We drove up and thought this was an abandoned property, with junk vehicles in the parking area, the roof looking like it was about to fall in, and overgrown plants all around. We ventured in to see if the inside was different, and noone was around -- we were able to walk all through the place, and did not feel safe. We left quickly, and though the ancellation agreement was to charge us for one night's stay anyway, they charged us for two. We've not been able to reach anyone at the property, and we're still trying to get this resolved.

This place felt unsafe and though we knew we'd lose one night's fee, we did not stay. And they they charged us for two nights!

If you enjoy unique local lodgings this is a fun place to stay. If you're looking for a resort experience with amenities, you likely would not enjoy staying here.

There's no AC or TVs. Though the rooms are well ventilated and have mini fridges. There is also a nice outdoor lobby area to sit. And there's free wifi which was great for email but occasionally slow for streaming. The lobby also has filtered water and a microwave.

Staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. One morning the coffee maker wasn't working so they went out to Starbucks to purchase a large container for breakfast.

They have a very serviceable breakfast in the AM - ordinary bagels; mini croissants; local fruits; coffee.

Front desk is only open very limited hours, though they post an after-hours number. I almost missed the check in deadline, but they told me they would send directions how to use the key lock box if necessary.

Location is very convenient, particularly if you don't have a car. It's a 10–15-minute walk to downtown Hilo which has a reasonable assortment of bars, restaurants and a farmers' market. There is also a supermarket and a McDonalds which serves the island special breakfast with rice / Portuguese sausage / Spam.

It's an interesting place to stay if you plan on doing a lot of sightseeing and are primarily looking for a place to sleep. Rates are very affordable, so if you're adventurous you could stay here and spend the money you save on tours or dining. 


Old Style, Affordable Hotel

You will be told from booking to your arrival that this is an old hotel. Yes, it is an old hotel and that is part of its charm and what makes it special. It is a quick walk to downtown Hilo and its Farmers Market, shops and restaurants.

You can not beat the price and the lobby is filled with unique carvings that you will not find in  a resort property. They loaned us flashlights to go explore a local cave and the staff is extra friendly.

Again, this is an old hotel (and you will be reminded of this many times). It may take awhile to get hot water to the shower. If you are lucky the room next door (or your roommate) will have taken a shower first so that the wait will not be too long. 

This has been our second stay and we will be back!!!!


Old Hotel but A Great Place to Stay---We will be back!

My first visit to Hawaii from England with my friend started in Oahu where I was spoilt with modern hotels and nice weather, so imagine my horror when we arrived in the rain at Wild Ginger which from the outside looked old and tired.  However, appearances can be very deceptive. It is an older colonial style building but it has a lot of character and charm. The rooms are clean, tidy and basic and housekeeping are available every day. The breakfast consisted of fruit, pastries, juice and coffee, and the staff could not be faulted and were always eager to help in any way they could.  It is in a good location for the town of Hilo and the major routes around the island. 
Yes the property could do with updating, however the owners have only recently purchased it and are in the process of doing just that.
We would definitely stay there again and would recommend it, especially if you want a true local hawaiian experience.

A True Local Experience

Worst scam ever. Don’t be fooled! We left as soon as we could find another hotel with room. The whole place is falling apart, broken windows, no hot water, huge dead cockroaches, … Pictures speak louder than words…
