First time booked bed and breakfast and absolutely loved it here. Maureen is so lovely. The house is clean and cozy. Very close to the airport. We have slept there 4 nights and drove around the Big Island. The breakfast was very good, Maureen’s quiche was amazing. Definitely would recommend the place!

Unforgettable 

Maureens Bed and Breakfast is a perfect place to stay in Hilo. Convenient to all east island locals. Be at the beach in 5 minutes, Volcanoes National Park in 35 minutes or almost anywhere in 45 minutes and not deal with the tourist hub on Kona that has little to offer compared to the laid back Hilo coast.

Maureen is gracious, hospitable and breakfast is always a great way to start the day. 

The house is a time capsule and unique in its design as it is comfortable.

Excellent vacation spot

This place is a real treasure. The house itself is unusual and beautiful architecturally, , with a spectacular great room with 30' ceiings, decorated eclectically with warmth and imagination and humor.   The lanais are cosy and wonderful to sit in during the frequent Hilo rain.   Lovely Japanese garden. Tasty breakfasts.  Clean, cosy rooms and bathrooms.  Loved the vintage Hawaiian artifacts and furniture. Maureen is a delightful host with great knowledge of the Hilo area and terrific advice and insight on local activities and sights. We adored very moment of our stay in this magical house and can't wait to visit again.

Maureen's is definitely a more homey and welcoming place to go than any fancy hotel (if you're looking for a bougey experience, go elsewhere. But if you're looking to get to know fellow travelers and be cared for by a dedicated and caring host, I would definitely recommend Maureen's!

Great location, eccentric house, comfortable accommodations

If you're looking to discover what early twentieth-century, Big Island luxury was like, this is the place to stay. It is a huge mansion, set back nicely on a garden-like property at the edge of town and located diagonally across the street from a lovely, intimate public beach. The house is spacious, the bedrooms are a bit small and Maureen is a personable host. The simple breakfast was a nice fruit bowl and quiche (I'm allergic to the later, but my wife said it was fine). 

There are a few disadvantages for those just looking for a place to stay overnight. The rooms, particularly those upstairs can get quite hot during the day and, unless there is an appropriate breeze, stay that way until the early morning hours. It took a lot of searching for my wife to find the bathtub plug and though there were at least a half dozen bars of bath soap, there was only one paper cup left in the bathroom dispenser. 

The wireless internet service is really too slow too be usable (probably a problem with something in their local setup). The other thing you need to be prepared for is the noise at night, coming from hundreds of coqui frogs. They first arrived on the Big Island in the 80s as passengers on some potted plants from the Caribbean and, with no local predators, have taken over the forests. (This is a huge problem in the area and is a far greater problem for indigenous species than it is for tired tourists.) Their chirping is fantastically loud, so ear plugs are a must. 

Being the wimpy sort of traveller who likes modern conveniences and quiet, I would have probably opted for another venue, but this would be a fun place for someone who wants an early-century experience.

Quaint, early century mansion with charm and some drawbacks

Overpriced, cold and old... if I had 3 words then these is what I choose. Inhospitable and v poor breakfast. What a let down. Will not return. Was desperate to find a quiet getaway and sadly was very disappointed. There is another hotel nearby which is much much better value. Avoid.
