Another wonderful stay at this lovely hotel,we have stayed at this hotel several times in the past & it never disapoints,arriving here always feels like coming home & we know that we are welcomed more like family than hotel guests.
The location is great & the rooms are very roomy & the free coffee,banana cake & fresh fruit each morning is a huge treat.
John & his amazing staff do a truly wonderful job & John's local knowledge is very helpful

Another wonderful stay at this great Hilo Hotel

The Dolphin Bay is a throwback, since much of it looks like it’s from the 70s. That’s not a bad thing if the place is kept up, which this is. Check in is at the main office, complete with physical keys. Entrances to rooms are on the outside, in face my ground level room had a front and rear entrance, great for a cross breeze as there is no AC.

The room comes with a kitchen as well as modern TV, comfy bed, and bathroom with decent shower. It’s in a neighborhood, so it’s quiet, but within a long walk to downtown Hilo.

Breakfast is coffee and homemade banana bread (yummy!) in the lobby. Staff will give great recommendations for a full breakfast nearby.

Yes it’s not fancy, but it has what you need at a decent price. It’s also family run.

Throwback

I can start out there is no ac in room. And i would have taken a star off for that, but everyone at the hotel was so nice and helpfull. Including giving us a place to put our bicycles. Banana bread was excellent. We walked to town and had no trouble. AC would be nice but room was comfortable, and we spent 4 months on the 4 islands and this was the best deal on the islands.

"Dive in to dolphin bay"

Of all the comforts offered guests mentioned in their website, the one that really counts for many a guest is the ability to be cool; a fluffy pillow and a stove are nothing compared to the ability to spend time in the rooms without dripping with sweat—the temp is in the 80’s there. Some people do not mind, but it makes a difference to many whose level of heat tolerance is lower. Yet this is one comfort left omitted in the website. Its misleading. Had I known there was no air conditioning, I would not have gone to this hotel.

We stayed for a couple nights while in Hilo and you can't ask for a better little hotel.  The rooms are comfortable, and while there is no AC with the windows open and the fans on we slept great. The scenery out back is lovely, its in a great location, and if you are a cat person there are some sweet feral cats as well as the cats at the hotel itself! :P The staff is all wonderful; very friendly and we received some excellent food/drink suggestions.  And the coffee and banana bread for breakfast was a great option when we didn't feel like going out for breakfast!  The frogs are pretty crazy at night- honestly they were so loud and regular that it was like white noise and it actually helped me sleep, but they do provide earplugs in the bathroom if its an issue.

Lovely little hotel

  This is a clean older hotel just blocks from "downtown". The room was comfortable with lots of space. It was quiet in a nice neighbourhood. Very Nice staff. No formal breakfast but they do offer free fresh papaya, coffee and banana bread each morning. It was a bit humid but cool enough at night to sleep. There is a 24 hr. laundry 5 minutes drive away.
  I would stay here again.

friendly clean quiet place close to downtown hilo

3 nights, family of 3, plus little dog, stayed in room 23 which has 2 bedrooms/2 bath, was more like a condo and we all felt was nicely appointed (couch, swivel chairs to look at ocean, coffee table, dining table, bar stools, full kitchen with d/w. One bedroom has king with full bath, other room has 2 Queens, couch also folds out). Staff friendly, check in/out easy. Fireplace log delivered daily, fresh towels by request, property is next to stairs leading to beach, access is immediate. DVDs in front office, free use. Smart TV with Netflix, etc. Jan ‘23, hot tub is open. 2 story hotel, no elevator, close to everything if you’re walking. Will gladly stay again.

Ocean view, cozy storm watching, spacious and clean

This is a great place to stay in Hilo.  My two daughters and I shared a 3 person room with queen and twin bed. The accommodations were quite satisfactory and met our needs perfectly.  The kitchen was a big plus and we cooked dinners every evening. Cookware was a bit limited but I made do with what was there. Housekeeping was wonderful (they clean and make beds daily, which is becoming increasingly rare). I requested extra towels and got new ones every day.  This is an older, lived-in property...this is not luxurious, but you are paying very little to stay here. If you plan on touring the island, this place is perfect. If you are planning to lounge on property, find a resort.  We visited in December, so we were fine without A/C. There was a powerful fan in the room. One big plus for this hotel was the superb coffee and delicious banana bread available every morning.  The biggest drawback was the coqui frogs that live nearby, which are very loud at night.  I was able to block the sound with You Tube 10 hour recordings of waves, fans, white noise etc.  My daughters got used to the frogs and didn't even notice their chirping after a while.  I would go back to Dolphin Bay the next time I am in Hilo.

Top in hilo

Dolphin Bay is a true gem of a different Hawai'i.  If you like glitz and glamour, stay at the Hilton. But if you want real folks, comfortable rooms, breezy lanai, inviting gardens, and a resident cat, chill here.  We needed this rest.  John is a knowledgeable host with a wry sense of humor. He knows all the best eats and sights. The staff is friendly and meticulous with cleaning, the grounds are beautifully kept.  We will be back if we can ever afford the airfare again.
