Great job

Can’t speak for how SCL is in the winter, but we visited in August 2023 for a family trip with our two dogs. There was a little bit of confusion with the way we booked our multiple rooms, so there only ended up being dog treats in one room instead of two, but it wasn’t a big deal. They still provided enough toys and treats and bowls for both dogs, which was very much appreciated. 

All three rooms were mountain-facing with a balcony, which was really great, especially when the west deck got a little crowded or if we just wanted a quiet place to sit. My partner and dog and I stayed in the king room with a loft, which was awesome. The room was spacious as was the second-level loft—there was plenty of room by the foot of the bed to fit our pup’s large bed. There was also a working fireplace that we didn’t use as much because summer (lol), but I imagine it comes in handy in the winter.

The activities were a bit lacking in variety, but we were rarely bored! The pool got crowded early but it wasn’t too much of a struggle to find a chair or bed to lay on. I appreciated the towels and sunscreen provided, but the towels ran out while I was there, which was a tad inconvenient.

We only had breakfast at the hotel restaurant, Prospect, and it was delicious if not a bit pricey. The waitstaff there were always super attentive and friendly. Service was pretty quick and the food was good!

Front desk staff were also super helpful allowing us to store our pup’s wet food in their fridge (no mini fridges in the rooms). I do wish they were a little friendlier/warmer, but they were still helpful.

I loved the feel of this hotel and the view of the mountain was very special.

It’s cozy and beautiful and just a great escape for a city dweller. Library was well-stocked with unique reads.

The food was fantastic and the people in the restaurant were really knowledgeable about the food.

Fantastic stay!

My husband and I booked a short stay at Scribners from Sun-Tues and truly had a great experience. We booked a special for free breakfast every morning and I thought it was just going to be some pastries- boy was I wrong. It was FANTASTIC. The restaurant is truly unmissable- we ate dinner there on Sunday night and it was incredible. The staff went above and beyond to make sure our stay was comfortable, and they even left us a bottle of cider for my husbands birthday. The hotel has gorgeous views, and they really nailed all the little details. We will definitely be back.

The best!

We really enjoyed our stay, made good use of the common area for playing games and relaxing, enjoyed a tequila tasting, and breakfast was outstanding.  Room was clean and quiet. Some staff was very friendly, others not as much - but ok.  Would plan to return for sure.

Very enjoyable stay

My fiance and I went for one weekday night to celebrate our new engagement and we had the most wonderful time! The food at breakfast was fantastic, the pool was in a lovely spot, and we enjoyed sitting out by the fire at night. Staff were super friendly and went above and beyond to make our stay special. Room was super comfortable. We read reviews that the mountain facing rooms with balconies were much nicer, so we stayed in one of those and really enjoyed drinking our coffee on the sunny balcony in the morning, overlooking the mountains. Hope we can come back soon!

Lovely, relaxing getaway

We spent two nights at Scribner's & had a great experience!   Our room was very spacious and had great views of the mountains.   The property was great -- from the pool to the corn hole game to the living room area.   However the best part was the food -- we loved our meal at Prospect .... best meal we had on our entire trip.   Oh and I can't forget the service -- was great from communication to delivery to the staff at the restaurant.    Must stay!

Relaxing Retreat!

We had a lovely mid-week getaway at Scribner's and really enjoyed the experience. I definitely recommend the mountain view rooms with terraces. Lovely to have your morning coffee out there looking at the view. We were able to enjoy the outdoor fireplace as well and make s'mores - you get a little kit in your room - which is a very nice touch. There's another outdoor fireplace up by the Prospect restaurant and we enjoyed drinks from the bar out by the fireplace a couple of times. A great spot for some downtime - no skiing required (but it is close to the mountain if that's your thing).

Good drip coffee is available and free in the lobby all day which is very handy. And they have flat and sparkling water on tap with bottles to take back to your room - a small thing, but a feature I love in a hotel. 

Masks are required in all the common areas and their COVID precautions are good which we appreciated. The staff contacts you by text at the beginning of your stay to establish communication and are very responsive and helpful via text or at the front desk providing great dining and other tips.

The restaurant is open for indoor dining which we aren't yet comfortable to do. But we did order for room service once for breakfast and once for dinner and the meals were excellent. 

It's worth noting that this is a refurbished property - so the walls are probably thinner than other hotels of this caliber. We didn't have any problem with it - but it's a dog-friendly property so when your neighbor's dog is barking, you definitely know about it. 

All in all, highly recommended.

Great Getaway - Even If You Don't Ski

Hip Lodge by Hunter Mountain. The owners did a major makeover.  It’s kind of swanky with with a hipster vibe— if that’s what you’re looking for. 
Easy to find and convenient to the slopes.
It has a good restaurant and bar as well.   It also has a spa and a pool. 
Overall a good spot for those who have the $ and appreciate the style

Hip with a view

We loved most things about this upscale, comfortable lodge nestled in the mountains, with its well-trained, gracious staff.

ROOM: We had a Mountain King (with balcony). Big enough, though not spacious (not much extra space but enough to comfortably walk around the room; comfy bed and pillows; convenient table that folds up to wall is good height for working on laptop; large open closet with good quality hangers; robes (but no slippers); full length mirror; extra plastic bag in wastebasket you can use for your laundry; great HVAC system with a setting for plain fan; HEPA filter!; large doorway to balcony with screen; gorgeous view of mountains (somewhat ruined by view of pool below). 

Slight problems, but not dealbreakers: poor lighting in room; no drawers for storage; few and out of the way outlets (we were constantly exchanging, unplugging one device to make room for another in out-of-the-way places); wooden stools at table are the right height, but uncomfortable to sit on for long (however, they nicely double on the balcony as little tables); canned pop music that is not to everyone’s taste from the pool has pounding base going from 8 am – 10 pm (starts 10 am on Sunday). You may have come to the countryside in the off-season for peace and quiet, but if you have a Mountain view room, you will hear this music all day long. 

Along these lines, people generally come to the Catskills off-season at least in part for clean fresh air. I think it is a real problem that rooms are furnished with reed diffusers (scent sticks) that add fragranced toxins to the air. Some guests may like them, but many won’t, so why not just stick with clean, fresh air? (There was also a scented candle at the reception desk.)

BATHROOM: Modern, functional; great shower; good heat system; bright. Negatives: small size; limited shelf space.

BREAKFAST: Fine.

DINNER: Very good food and good service; comfortable setting. Note, a 20% tip is added automatically to the bill.

COMMON AREA: Huge indoor space; lots of grounds as well.

All in all, a very nice, comfortable accommodation with minor problems. 

However, Scribner’s is not adept at managing disability accommodation requests. [If you look at the website, you’ll note that all the references are to “ADA accessibility.” However, they are actually only referring to wheelchair access, and possibly to people with other mobility impairments. In fact, guests may have a range of disabilities, and there is no reference whatsoever to this. (The image on the Access page of the website has nothing to do with disability, which reflects the lack of disability awareness of accommodation higher-ups. While they reference access to the website, in fact the font, contrast and size is not particularly accessible.)]

As for my particular situation, my advanced written disability access request was first overlooked, then worked out, then overlooked again. In the end, we did work it out and I do believe that management now has a basic understanding that disability access requires a system for collaborating with guests who have disabilities, fulfilling accommodations, and then monitoring. I would advise though, that guests with disabilities follow up their written requests with a phone call. I believe this accommodation is getting it, and it is a very nice place to stay, so I’d give it a chance.

We go to the Catskills frequently and I plan to return to Scribner’s. I found the service very welcoming, the room attractive and comfortable, the setting spectacular, and the food very good.
