I booked a single room and when I arrived, I noticed an overwhelming stench of body odor.  The receptionist said that the room just needed airing out. In fact no, it was that one or more previous guests had slept on and sweated all over the blue and white quilt that looks so cute in the photo.  The quilt and the pillow stank. All of the doors are on automatic door closers which may be a fire code requirement but they were set to "slam" closing mode. So as people came in to the room with multiple bunks next to my room late at night, one at a time, the door slammed after them, again when they went out to the bathroom (door slam) and came back from the bathroom (door slam). This went on from midnight to 3:00 am and then the doors started slamming from 6:00  am onward as people got up to catch early ferries. I complained at the front desk and they shrugged.  I toughed it out for three nights and then checked out early and went elsewhere.  As they had demanded full payment in advance, they refused to refund the balance of the week. I left anyway and they ultimately agreed the noise was unacceptable and refunded the four remaining nights. The kitchen is fine.  The bathroom is adequate. The location is excellent. I do not recommend this hostel.  Would not stay there again.

Fine if you just need to park your stuff somewhere - sleep is impossible

August 2022. We stayed 3 nights in the 6 bed female dorm. 

The wifi was great and all the staf were super friendly. The kitchen was well equipped meaning we could save money and cook. All the bathrooms were clean and the showers were great. Lovely seating outside the but within the hostel to have dinner or read your book. Location was super about 15 minutes away from a lovely beach and an easy walk 10 minute from the transportation centre / Main Street. All the locks were done by a key code which was smart and safe. Free wifi worked really well. We arrived 1 hour before check in and they were very happy for us to sit in the common room and wait, super friendly. Great stuff. 

But it was hot! One large fan in the room and we were fine with the windows open and it’s the hight of summer so to be expected. The room was also quite small so don’t bring a huge suitcase especially when there are 6 of us in it not much space for bags! To other young travellers, everyone else was a few years older than us, but it was never an issue at all. 

I would 100% be returning. Felt very safe as a young female traveller and all the guests were very friendly and the area was just beautiful. Loved my time here.

Pros: clean-looking; cute decor; nice location if you want to be in the heart of Hyannis across from the docks and a lot to do; parking lot easily accessible; few lawn games; small finger food and coffee/tea for breakfast; very nice people working there

My Cons: the female dorm looks larger in the online photos (I thought I would be more spaced out from the others in the room); one person's bed squeaked; a couple of loud modified vehicles or revving motorbikes heard on the streets between 12:00 - 1:30 AM; then a police siren (then quiet); oh yeah, the one person that snores non-stop; also loud rotating fan in room wasn't overly bad if you like a background noise to sleep to and cool off with (but after a while it became annoying; the rotating tower fan I sleep to occasionally in the summer has a timer, because I can't sleep to a fan n noise all night long); didn't realize we have to make our own beds with the linens and then bring them down when leaving (however, in the top bunk bed, the fitted sheet was already put on); I hope they clean the blue blanket that is on each bed also after each guest because the sign said only to bring the sheets/pillowcases to the laundry bins when done but not the blue blanket (hmmmm?). So, I will ask about that the next time I am there.

Anyways, after a few hours in my "room" I slept the rest of the night in my comfy car. Like camping. I couldn't take the snoring and also the fact that I am in the small room with about 4-5 other strangers in the dark. My hand was on my purse next to me on my bed. And that was another thing that sort of kept me from falling fast asleep too.

I will try it again. For one - two nights, it's not bad. For the price it's pretty good (the difference from a regular hotel room, I now can spend it on food/activities/drinks). And I can sleep in my car (if it's warm enough) and I still have use of the bathrooms there (and others can have one less person in the dorm room :).

first time staying in a  hostel

The Hyannis Hostel is absolutely lovely! It is located within walking distance of the ferry. We were warmly greeted by the staff and enjoyed short conversations with other guests from all over. I was recommending this location to folks before we even returned home! It is safe, clean and incredibly comfortable.

Fantastic!

The positives first..

This hostel is in a great location..walking distance to everything:
Two beaches, a picnic beach and a sandy beach, to restaurants, cafes, to supermarkets
To the central bus station and it’s just in front of the expensive ferries to Nantucket..so lots of people who missed the last ferry stay overnight.

I’ve stayed at HI Truro years ago, which is a converted lighthouse, and it was a good experience but it was as isolated as lighthouses always are. Even with a car you are ifar far away from the world. That is t the case here at all..it was easy to get around to other parts of the cape and back to Boston.

The hostel itself is faultless. It does everything to standard. There are many many clean bathrooms and the extra blankets. The kitchen was ok. The breakfast was nothing special but fine.

Here are the odd things

Its a house that looks cozy without being cozy.
And it was full of people whose identity seemed enmeshed with hosteling.
There were lots and lots of conversations about hostels, other hostels, hostel tours, hostel pricing, hostel specials..and little else.

The staff was friendly and informative and repetitive. I stayed for five days. I had a flight from Boston on the sixth day. I was asked and I told this..the only story I could tell..when I checked in and paid in full. And I wa stole there was a strict 7 day maximum stay
And I said OK! I only have 5 days. And she seemed to have ears.

I was asked and to,d this story the second day with a second volunteer. (Hi doesn’t have workers ..they have volunteers.)

You wanna guess what happened? I had the exact same conversation several more times. Word for word. Strangely no other rules were so memorized and they were lovely about other things..you can leave your bag before the 3 pm check in and again after the 11 am check out, there is free use of showers after check out and beach towels..it’s a nice place

Except there was a glitch and four volunteers repeated and repeated that I had to get the fork out after 7 days..and no one heard, read, listened or comprehended anything but the whistling inside their own heads.
This one point was perverse. Was I being accused of loitering? Of POTENTIAL loitering..it made no sense.

Very pleasant

BEACH ROAD OPPOSITE THE HARBOUR IS ONE OF HYANNIS’ MORE PRESTIGIOUS LOCATIONS….

….yet there’s a travellers’ hostel there!

This is because RUTH CROCKER, a long time HYANNIS tour guide willed her family home to HI. So budget travellers can stay in a genuine CAPE COD dwelling (all weathered shingles etc) in this very good location. Only a few minutes to the inner harbour piers and eats joints. Maybe 10 mins to the MAIN STREET with the usual main st.facilities (but NO SUPERMART!!), a few extra minutes to the BUS STATION and not much longer in the opposite direction to the first of 3 OK BEACHES. Those times are walking – there’s a summer HYANNIS TROLLEY does a circuit including all these places every 45 mins for a nominal fare.
But the location is not perfect – there is no BIG supermart close by – true there are a couple of limited joints up on or just north of the main street (ask reception), but you need to travel further for a sizeable one.

MORE ON THE HOSTEL – staff exceptional – big thanks to WILL for kindness way above level expected
-no shortage of comfy sitting areas. The front verandah gives a nice outlook over the park just north of the inner harbour. 
- the kitchen was a bit squeezy but not too bad.
- free WIFI seemed OK.
- outside has plenty of room for parking and relaxing. I managed to hang some washing on my rope tied between the clothesline and a tree (I don’t like to impose on clotheslines might by used to hang sheets etc). BTW – in typical HI form, no hand washing facilities. I did my stuff in bathroom hand basins.

SUM UP – this is a good one. Recommended.

Stay at the Top End of Town.

HI Hyannis is a lovely old building on harbour front, nicely modernised with good facilities. Kitchen is small but well equipped and most people don't use much (could get cramped if everyone wanted cook a meal at once!). We had a private room with 2 beds which was up in the attic, lovely view across the harbour. No air conditioning but electric fan in window which we kept on all the time. Lots of places to eat nearby on harbour or short walk to main street shops and restaurants. Bit of a wait in the morning for showers. Self service breakfast of cereal and toast.
Good range of people staying lots of age groups and lots of nationalities. In general comfortable good value place to stay. If you are there i the summer check out the cape baseball league fixtures, Harbour Hawks play 5 mins walk from the hostel and games are free to watch!

Great place to stay very convenient for ferry to Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket.

My friend and I spent 4 nights here and loved it. 

Pros:
-free parking (parking is a hot commodity this close to the harbour)
-basic breakfast included (toast, cereal, yogurt, coffee, and tea) (we bought eggs and cooked them to add to our breakfasts and it was lovely)
-strong WiFi (we connected to it in the park across the street)
-walking distance to everything (or the free trolly goes right by to hop on)
-super friendly and knowledgeable staff
-fire pit (with marshmallow sticks if that’s your jam)
-excellent common spaces
-great air flow (we were only on the main floor so I can’t speak to the upper levels)
-clean
-will loan beach towels and chairs

Cons:
-no a/c (lots of fans and we were fine, but in a heat wave it might be a bit difficult to manage)
-some of the sinks are shallow so it can get a bit messy (it’s just water though so not a big deal)
-not much in room storage (pack light)
-unless you have a private room the bedroom door doesn’t lock (we didn’t worry about this, but I know it can be a concern for some people)

Perfect location

The HI Hyannis Hostel is a jewel. The manager and staff members are knowledgeable, hardworking, and helpful.  The Hostel is located on the Waterfront, within walking distance to Downtown Hyannis, the ferries, and the bus station.  A delicious breakfast is included in the reasonable nightly rate.

Not enough can be said about how great this place is! It’s a fantastic location, with a very short walk to the harbour (ferries), Main Street, and Beach! The staff, Loretta, Mary-Liz, Angel and Victoria are the nicest hostel staff I’ve ever come across! This place has a very homely feel to it, and it was great to be able to have a BBQ with other hostellers, and get to know them! Breakfast is great, the hostel is really clean, I cannot recommend this place enough! Fantastic
