Enjoyed the view and location. Panoramic balcony view was amazing. Stayed in the suite. The room was clean and nice. Decor could use a bit of updating. WiFi was super fast and we had no problems getting logged in. Staff was outstanding.  Staff was friendly and helpful during our stay. The breakfast bar was your typical faire. The coffee was hot and the food ready on time. If you stay here, please be aware that you are driving to the top of a pretty steep hill, so be ready for that. It was a little scary pulling in from the main road. If you're not careful you could have an accident with the oncoming traffic when you pull out onto the road from the drive. Everything you need is within walking distance. There was one little thing. I'm still not sure if I believe it or not. We had an unexplainable encounter twice on our first night there. The first time it was about 1030 PM and the second at about 230 AM. We were woken up out of a sound sleep by the sound of a child giggling in different areas of the room. The sound was IN OUR ROOM. We checked our cell phones and scouted around and found nothing that could have made that noise. I heard the noise again at about 630 the morning that we left. I was playing on my laptop and the noise was right in front of me. Of course, my husband discounted it as something goofy going on with the laptop, but I'm not so sure.  We told the staff about it and she said that there were no kids on site during our stay. So, believe what you want. I think the hotel is a little bit haunted. The desk clerk admitted that we're not the first to experience strange happenings during our stay. Ghosts aside, I really liked the hotel.  I'd probably stay again, only in a different room though.

It's a 1960s Inn, but it is well maintained and clean.  The beds are very comfortable.  The view from the balcony is GREAT, and they even have a ceiling fan on the balcony.  We enjoyed wine on the balcony every evening. They have in room coffee with real coffee mugs (not paper cups), and real drinking glasses too (not plastic).  Breakfast included everything you could want (eggs, bacon, sausage, potatoes, waffles, muffins, bagels, yogurt, fruit, cereal, etc, etc).  The only down side was the street noise, but I'm guessing that would be an issue with most of the hotels in the area.  I would stay here again.

Although the hotel is older, lots of history here. Well maintained, pleasant, helpful staff. Here with friends and my husband. My friends needed a break from some serious health issues, so we decided on a mini stay near home. Their room heat wasn’t working properly, and it got fixed right away. My friend has trouble sleeping at night, and they let us move a recliner chair from our room to hers. They gave us a good tip for dinner- Harry’s Stone Grill ( go hungry, you’ll need a box too) and it snowed overnight the day before we were leaving,  They had the parking lot and the drive down to the main road plowed and treated. Cute town for antiques, wine tasting, shopping, history. 

Real Customer Service 

Great hillside location just outside of historic downtown Madison, Indiana. Overlooks the Madison/Milton Bridge on Ohio River! Clean newer remodeled rooms, great friendly and helpful staff and a good breakfast to boot. Great place for romantics, couples and families too..  Clean, awesome location with everything one must have on a trip in a small historic town,

Overall, we really enjoyed our two night stay for our anniversary. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The hotel was clean and the balcony overlooking the river was great! They had some ads and menus in the room for local restaurants, which was helpful since it was our first time to the area. They have a cute fish pond in the entryway and we loved stopping to watch the fish on our way in and out. The continental breakfast was good, one of the better ones I have had. The only negative thing is that the walls are thin and we had noisy neighbors. We were woken up at 3:00 AM by our neighbors blaring music, so we called the front desk. They were very prompt in coming up to ask them to turn down the music, and we didn't have any more issues after that. We had such a nice experience, that we have already booked another stay!

Friendly staff, nice touches

A wonderful experience.  I come to Madison, IN frequently and always stay at the Hillside.  The warm, comfortable and friendly people always brighten my stay.   The rooms are always clean, comfortable, have a balcony overlooking the Ohio River.

Relax and enjoy!

This is a cozy, hotel on a hill overlooking the Ohio River, the quaint  town of Madison & the beautiful scenery. Julie & Julia were both very pleasant & helpful. The rooms are sufficient for your needs. The beds are comfortable & the white comforters are very clean & fresh, as is the room. Breakfast has been scaled back due to COVID, but we found most everything any other hotel has, mostly prepackaged  for safety. The dining room is closed for now, but you can see through it to the bridge & beautiful landscape. The buildings & houses in the town are well worth the drive thru. We have stayed here 3 times & will definitely stop every time we are in the area.

Lovely town & hotel

The historic Hillside Inn in is a lovely older hotel located in the beautiful river town of Madison, IN. The hotel sits upon a gorgeous hillside with breathtaking views of the Ohio River and the quaint downtown area of historic Madison. 
Our large king suite came equipped with a fireplace, heart shaped jacuzzi tub, mini fridge, and balcony. 

Pro's: Breathtaking views, very friendly & helpful staff. The fridge kept our drinks refreshingly cold. The jacuzzi felt amazing!

Cons: Non smoking hotel but not a deal breaker for us. Downtown shops & restaurants are within walking distance, if you don't mind walking long distance from the hotel. 

The biggest issue was the black mold on the ceiling outside the bathroom.

Lovely Historic Hotel

I must say the hotel has wonderful views. The beds weren't bad. The pillows for me were kind of hard, but I'm picky about my pillows so that didn't bother me. The breakfast was kind of a letdown. We got down to the breakfast room a little after 7. There were just a few people there. The only hot food was three sausage links and some watery scrambled eggs. No coffee. We waited for about half an hour and they got the coffee going. After another half hour they brought some bacon. The lady that made our reservations, Birdie, was so sweet. Birdie must work nights. I called to ask about the light outside and she told me what to do. I also asked if there was any way I could go into the meeting room just to take a picture and walk out. She was sweet about that also. Sadly she got off duty before that could happen. As far as receptionists go, Birdie is the best!! She was patient and kind, unlike one of the others when I said I didn't know where to park, they replied between the two white lines, lol. All in all nice hotel. The kids loved sitting outside on the porch overlooking the town.

The management at the front desk, at this time, have still neglected responding either by phone or e-mail concerning an additional (2nd night's stay....July 2nd) charged, instead of being removed from the bill, as the stay was for only one night, not two.  

This was to be corrected the next morning at checkout but was instead promised later that day....the transaction for which has still not yet been made, or further acknowledged.  Sadly thus far, marking a hoped-for
visit into a poor business decision by this hotel. Contacting the Chamber of Commerce in writing is appropriate.
