My wife and I went to Convict Lake Resort for a long weekend to celebrate her birthday. We chose the property because of the proximity to Mammoth, and the fact that they let us bring our pups with us. We stayed in Shasta 23, and we really did enjoy our time at the resort. However, there are a lot of updates needed at the facility. So, here are a list of pros and cons:

Pros:
- Location. 20 minutes from Mammoth Village and all that it has to offer. Right off of 395 so easy access. Plus, you can't complain about Convict Lake as a location.
- Pet Friendly
- Cabins are well equipped. Everything you need to cook your own meals.
- Staff is fantastic and were always willing to help in any way.
- Onsite dining: The Restaurant at Convict Lake is a high-end restaurant with fantastic food and service.
- General Store: Well equipped to supply your needs while staying at the resort.
- Super quiet resort. It was nearly sold out, but we didn't have to deal with any serious noise.

Cons:
- Cabins are well worn, at least the one we stayed in. Lots of chipped paint, worn spots on the carpet. Definitely needs updating.
- Roads/Parking: Granted, we went in mid-winter with snow and rain. However, our cabin parking was SUPER muddy. The cabin beside us had gravel over their parking, but none in sight for us.
- Lack of seating: While we knew the cabin was very small, there was no room for chairs other than around the small kitchen table. This meant we had to sit in bed to watch any TV.
- A/C: While we didn't need it, I didn't see any indication of A/C in our cabin. Be aware of this during summer visits.

Honestly, we enjoyed our stay. But, don't go expecting high end. And besides, most people are really using this as a basecamp for all their other activities.

A 5 Star Review of a 3 Star Facility

Worst bed ever!  We barely slept as we grappled with an ancient and horrible bed.  We ended up trying to sleep with our heads at the foot of the bed since lying in the correct direction leaves our head lower than our feet.  With a rack rate of over $400 per night, I think the guest deserves a good night's sleep but you will not get it here.

I think we deserve a refund and management should purchase new beds.

The room suffers from poor maintenance, loose bathroom faucets etc.  For the price, the management of this establishment should bring these rooms up to a level that is commensurate with the price, which is not inexpensive.  We stayed in #25 Genevieve.

Terrible Bed, not worth the room rate.

Just a great place all around. Been there a long time ago and was a little reluctant to go again. Pleasantly surprised by the great menu and delicious food. Our whole party was happy and vowed to return.

Came there for good food and got it

We've stayed here both in the summer and winter. The cabins have all the amenities and even a bbq off the deck. It's a nice place as a home base for a few nights. They have a restaurant on the property, but we did our own cooking.

Nice cabins,  beautiful lake

The resort doesn’t look like a typical resort as you drive in, rather like a campground with cabins and a funky General Store. However, the cabins are very attractive with well-equipped kitchenettes, modern bathroom tile and fixtures, pine log furniture, some have a hot tub, flat screen tv’s and workable wifi. The views of the nearby mountains are wonderful. The staff was friendly and accommodating, especially since I made our reservation for the wrong three-day period! They placed us in an empty cabin for two nights, and a different cabin for our third night without charging us for the change or the small amount extra that the first cabin cost. The bar/restaurant is excellent and known for its imaginative chef. We had dinner one night in the bar where some of the best pizza we’ve ever had is available in addition to the regular dinner menu. We enjoyed dinner in the restaurant on our last night. It is expensive and the quality hit-or-miss with some excellent dishes and others not quite up to par, but the incredible sourdough bread brought hot to the table with silky smooth butter makes up for any subsequent shortfalls!
Convict Lake itself is a fisherman’s paradise about 1/4 mile down the road from the resort, and crowded on weekends. The “marina” is just a shack with pontoon boats, paddle boards and kayaks for rent at steep prices. It is best enjoyed early in the morning when the 3 1/4 mile trail around the lake is empty and perfect for a walk or jog. 
The resort stay was a perfect ending to a backpacking trip with our 13-year-old grandson.

A Western Cabin Resort Near Mammoth Lakes With Modern Amenities

We stayed three nights in cabin 10. The cabin wasn't clean - bathroom toilet wasn't clean, shower had hair from previous guests, etc. The furniture doesn't match what was shown in the pictures. 
Cabinets, windows, etc. are so worn down one drawer was even missing the bottom. 

With some care this place could be really awesome, but unfortunately it looks like it hasn't been updated or really cared for in many years. I'm not one to leave reviews but I think if people keep renting these cabins out without complaining they'll never be updated.

Needs a serious update. So much potential!

What could be better than a marriage ceremony amongst an aspen grove followed by a reception in an elegant wedding tent that can seat 100 or so guests? It sounds wonderful unless you are a Convict Lake Resort guest who came to enjoy the wilderness. When you return to your cabin after a day of hiking, fishing, swimming, or boating and expect to hear the wind through the aspens as you cook dinner on your cabin porch, you’ll instead hear loud music from the wedding. The tent is acoustically transparent, so you will get to listen to party music until the quiet time at 10:00 PM. 

There was a wedding each of the three nights I stayed in a two-person cabin. One night, the wedding crowd took 30 minutes to disperse. Another night there was an after party in a cabin until 1:00 AM. The third night crowd was more mellow when the music stopped. This was not the wilderness experience that I expected.

The management apologized to me and assured me that weddings are not a daily occurrence, but are quite common in the summer, especially on the weekends. They offered to comp me two nights in the fall so I could experience Convict Lake Resort at a more mellow time. While I appreciate the gesture, as a reviewer, I don’t feel that I can accept such compensation. My aim is to communicate my experience. Noise might not bother you. You might be newly engaged and looking for a venue.

A positive for those considering a wedding at Convict Lake Resort is that you can put cabins on hold for up to six months. If you are hosting an event and serving alcohol, this is a great option so that your guests don’t have to drive elsewhere. 

What are the accommodations like? Convict Lake Resort has everything from two-person cabins to a couple of lodges that can host a dozen or so people, as long as some of them don’t mind sharing a room with others. The two-person cabin I rented had everything one would need to cook either in the kitchen or on the porch—utensils, blender, crockpot, pots, pans, dishes, and so on. The bedroom is the main room, the room into which you step when you open the door. The bed takes up most of the floor space. It is comfortable. The bathroom is small and has a shower that tall and large people might find a bit tight, but it has hot water. The interior of the cabin is well worn and shows signs of various retrofits over the years. There is an overhead fan to move air, but no air conditioning. However, the cabin is so small that keeping the windows open provides a nice breeze (but that also allows the wedding music to permeate). Those who are used to upscale accommodations might not appreciate the worn paint, nail holes in the wall, and other signs of an aging building. 

If you are looking for a wilderness experience that is only a short walk to Convict Lake, you might first call the resort and ask them to recommend days for which there isn’t a wedding. The surrounding area is gorgeous, especially the hike up Convict Canyon.

Weddings and Wilderness

Stayed 2 nights and wish we stayed longer. Each Cabin is different configuration so when booking choose what’s best for your family.  Ours was recently upgraded with full kitchen, sofa bed, round dining table, 4 chairs, 2 twin beds, very nice bathroom with shower, and front porch had round metal table and 4 metal chairs, plus gas BBQ.  Windows all around cabin opened to allow fresh air and breeze.  Efficient and quiet electric wall heater and also a pedestal stand fan. I saw some cabins have air conditioning but ours didn’t and we did not need it in the month of May. Beautiful views out all windows and especially from front porch. Deer came to our cabin daily to eat grass and lounge in the shade of Aspen trees not more than 10 feet from us. Woodpeckers, Robins, and other birds chirped and flew around. And of course we saw many squirrels and chipmunks. I really liked strolling the grounds of the resort and walking the nearby trails in early morning. Resort staff were friendly. Extra thanks to Anne in the General Store and Katelyn at the Marina. We are definitely coming back to stay at Convict Lake Resort cabins! Best upgraded cabins

Convict Lake Resort is a wonderful place to stay when visiting Mammoth area.  We went for a snowboarding vacation and loved the easy access to Mammoth but also the quiet of being nestled into our only little section of the Majestic mountains.  Our stay had everything we needed and the pet friendly cabins and area was perfect for our little pooch.  We highly recommend staying at this resort any time of year!

Quaint Cabins Nestled In A Beautiful Mountain View

We rented the Aspen cabin for 5 nights with the family. The cabin was comfortable and the location was awesome. My BF’s family has been coming here for years. They love it and now so do I. The resort has everything you need. Lake. Cabins. Restaurant. Store. If you forgot it they will have it. This will now be our annual trip for family. The kids and adults both love this place. Making memories one year at a time.  Booked again for 2021.
