Very nice stay in an historic hotel!  Parts of the movie ‘Paper Moon’ were filmed there!  They kept the restaurant open late for us and the meals and drinks were excellent.  Cozy room with a patio and a view of the large Czech egg at a reasonable price.  Friendly service and homemade Kolaches for breakfast!  Highly recommended.

Warm welcome at an historic hotel!

We have gone here many times & always happy....we have a special room we always requested.
My husband had been hospitalized in Taos and on the way home ... he needed to stop midway to rest as he had been very ill. I called the morning of our arrival to request our favorite room and was reassured it would be ready and waiting...what a relief to know after a scary hospital stay.
We had told them we'd be in late around 11:00 that night....they said no problem...we entered the hotel and no one at the desk....I called several times on my phone and they didn't answer.... finally I let out a few hollars and the guy came out 
This hotel used to run by dependable, ethical sweet older ladies.
This guy was young and told us the young gal on day shift had given our room we had legally secured by credit card to other travelers! 
What! How could they, this is unethical, unacceptable etc!
They said you can have the suite at the same price....no thank you...I knew what the suite is.... it's an Anne Frank type hot attic room with cramped quarters....not a suite at all... it's a hold over room . I was understandably livid...my husband was exhausted and we were very, very angry with the predicament!
The young man said "well let me show you room 313"...I followed him up and on approaching I stated "This is your Suite room I recognized it, so again they were dishonest ...if it weren't so late and in the middle of nowhere...we would have left...but had no choice but to stay.
How upsetting to be hustled like that from a supposed upstanding historical hotel.
Boo to these young people put in charge there, they are awful!!!
Beware of the sour suite deal!

An awful, disrespectful experience!

We were nearing the end of our vacation and not looking forward to the long drive across the country on 70 but found this interesting looking hotel. We booked a room on their website and we were excited to relax with a drink and dinner and try out one of their two on site restaurants. We drove over 7 hours from Colorado on Saturday and arrived around 5:30 only to find at check-in that BOTH of their restaurants were closed due to a wedding party. This hotel is in the middle of nowhere and they should have told me when I made the reservation that their restaurants were going to be closed, especially because they highlight these venues on their website. The desk clerk told us the closest other place to eat was a 25 minute drive away. 
We cancelled our stay, they refunded our deposit and we drove on to Salina and stayed there overnight.

Call before going there-and have a back up plan.

We stayed at the midland for a photo shoot at Wilson Lake.  There were 3 Teen Models, 2 moms, and the photographer and their family.  First I will say it is a super cool historic old hotel.  They have done a pretty good job with updates.  It has a creepy cool feel.  Definitely felt the presence of spirits.  we had so much fun and it is a place we will never forget. We had dinner and the free breakfast and both were good.  The only negative is the rooms are EXTREMELY small and dark!  So it wasn't ideal for models to get ready in.  If you don't mind small and like the historic feel then this place is for you! 

Creepy but cool old hotel

This property has been nicely restored. My room was small. but I liked the walk-in shower. There were several problems with the room: the TV (analog!) would not work with the cable, the light near the bed did not work, and the shade in the bathroom had rolled up and could not be pulled down. I phoned the front desk about these issues and never received a reply, nor was anyone available the following morning. The breakfast was good, however, as was my meal at the restaurant the previous evening. I would have given a higher rating if it were not for the lack of response on the part of the management.

OK lodging, poor service

We wanted dinner and a room for a night in our trip along I-70 for us and our dog. This was the perfect stop! This is a historical hotel but with the comforts of a contemporary hotel. The staff were very friendly and helpful. They brought us extra blankets when we asked, kept the kitchen open for us to get a bite to eat, and welcomed our dog in one of their rooms reserved for dogs and their people.

A must stay over on the trip along I-70!

I had a wonderful stay in this historic hotel! A couple of things I wanted to mention though!

1. Remember this is an old hotel and old hotels were built with smaller rooms, so remember that as a point of charm and remember in modern America we are spoiled with our huge hotel rooms. I had room 208, which was a fairly large room, though other rooms are a bit smaller. 

2. The transom window above the door! I absolutely love and they are SOOO charming. Just remember there is light that door flow through the window at night. Didn't bother me one bit, but saw a couple of reviews pointing that out. 

3. Noise - The hotel is older and not perfectly silent. Just something to note. I didn't really have an issue. I couldn't hear the hallway pretty clearly (squeaky floor boards and guests talking). 

4. Shift Siren - This is a small town and part of the charm is they have a shift siren that sounds like a tornado/air raid alarm. It is part of the charm and just part of the town. Not the hotels issue, though remember you may hear a loud siren! 

Other Awesome Things: 

The property is amazing and just a fun place to stay. The room was nice and cold upon arrival and perfectly clean! The evening staff woman was very kind and the day staff fairly good, a little less professional, but great none the less. 

The town is sparsely populated and just what the doctor ordered! I loved staying here. Again, if you want a larger population base, this is not the town to stay in. This is a great small town that operates at a charming slower pace that provides refreshing peace!

Great and Wonderful Stay In a Rare Gem!

This hotel is definitely worth driving two miles off 1-70.  The hotel is interesting architecturally.  The staff was attentive and friendly.  Our room had a huge, comfortable bed, and the entire hotel was very clean.  We enjoyed a meal and drinks in the Sample Room.  Food was good, portions were generous, staff was excellent, and prices were quite reasonable.  This was an excellent value compared to any hotels in and around Salina.  There is no way you would get this kind of service and experience for this reasonable a price elsewhere.

Excellent service and great value in an historic setting

Great stop at charming, well restored hotel. The expansion site (barn) is a nice place for a drink (we skipped the barbeque) and dinner at the hotel was very good. It was a little too busy for the server to keep up, but otherwise we enjoyed our time.

Review

We were excited to stay in this gorgeous limestone hotel.  Check-in was quick,   Our room had a comfortable king bed, and adequate bathroom.  I especially liked that rooms were named after the early pioneers in this area.  As I understand it, because of the train, a lot of business deals with merchants were conducted in this building.  Sadly, their dining room was not open the day we were here! Breakfast the next morning had kolaches and a selection of cheese and sausage.  I was a little chilly when we were going to bed, and asked for a blanket.  The person in charge brought both a blanket and little heater.  (The room temperature was fine, I had just gotten chilly in the cold weather and rain).  This was much appreciated.
