Very nice condo beautiful sunsets beach steps away...grounds keeping very clean and kept...all I needed inside condo with a miniature kit to get u started...staff very knowledgeable of area.  Pool area clean and quite...parking available ....

Sunsets Available

The units at Sand Cay are individually owned and furnished by the owners.  Some owners renovate and improve their units and some do not.  Unit 116 has not been refreshed in a long time.  It is dirty, tacky and very old looking.  It is so unpleasant to be on vacation and staying in an ugly environment.Especially when you have paid $15000 and the place turns out ti be a dump.

Inquire about updating before you commit.  There are some nasty units here.

Old and tacky

My husband and I have been coming to Sand Cay Beach Resort in Longboat Key for over twenty years.  
Pros:
We like the Gulf Front units with the beautiful sunsets and the quick access to the beach.
Cons:

This is a review of Unit 116 where we are currently staying for five weeks.  This has been an ongoing unpleasant experience.  Unit 116 at SCBR is one you DO NOT want to rent. The units are all individually owned and some owners maintain and update their units.  These owners do not.
When we first arrived after a long flight with delays we were told we could not get in until the following day because guests of the owner had not left.  This meant moving in twice.  We were very dismayed with the dirty, dated, disorganized mess we found in 116. I will attach photos of some of the worst problems.
Some of many problems:
I like to cook and the kitchen is poorly stocked with all the cupboards in a jumble. I found plastic storage bags containing a fishy smelling substance in a jumbled drawer with dull knives.

The inside of the storage area under the cabinets in the kitchen  is grimy and disheveled.  

One of the cabinet doors is broken and hanging off the hinges.  

The utility room is a dangerous mess filled with useless junk.  

The plug in for the dryer is pulled out from the wall, just hanging.  It is a fire hazard.

The furniture is old, tired and soiled.

There is a big open hole in the bedroom wall.  ( An entrance for rats and insects ?)

The unit is cluttered with useless, ugly Knick knacks which just add to the general disarray.

One of the tvs didn’t  work.

The bedspreads smell of tobacco and urine.

All the unit types rent for the same amount of money.  We are paying a significant amount per night for a Gulf Front unit which would be fine if the unit were not neglected.  The units that have not been renovated are a very poor value.  Someone paying a lower rate could have a far superior unit than occupants of Unit 116.

Some of these items have been repaired since I reported them. Dealing with management is another unpleasant experience here.  Sarah is the only one who offers to help.

Do not rent Unit 116 at Sand Cay.  It is a shabby, neglected , overpriced eyesore.

You should ask at the desk before you commit to know the date of the last renovation of any unit you might consider.  The buildings are 48 years old.

Choose another location

An amazing beach resort stay, the unit we stayed in was completely remodeled as of November 2023. Beds were comfortable, unit was very clean, and modern. It felt like the owners truly cared that their guests had a comfortable and welcoming experience. The condo is perfectly located to enjoy beautiful sunset views and morning walks on the beach. Lastly, the walk to the beach give or take is only about a minute or two, which is tough to beat! I highly recommend this resort and unit for any family or couples looking to enjoy a beautiful vacation in Longboat Key. 

Sand Cay Unit 101 - A Memorable Trip & Amazing Condo 

We have been looking for a place to set up our new family reunion tradition. The past two summers we left other places wishing for better accommodations. 
Sand Cay is it! God willing, we will be coming back. We found clean spacious units fully equipped for cooking, gathering and enjoying the great gulf beach. 
Definitely recommend this place if you are interested in a quiet and peaceful family vacation.

Family summer reunion

I just loved my stay in Unit 315 during  April 2023. The unit is beautifully furnished, very spacious and clean. The master bedroom was extremely comfortable with lovely bed linens and towels. The gulf views were enticing from inside the unit. The outdoor patio was a fabulous spot to enjoy morning coffee and a cocktail in the evening.
The development is located next door to a fun spot for cocktails and to grab a quick meal. The beach and pool were just steps away. Overall, I was thrilled with my stay in Unit 315 and would highly recommend it to my friends and family. I am looking forward to spending another week in this unit next year!

Great view from unit 316 but the unit is old and tired. 
Pro- mattress comfort, refrigerator, view of beach, friendly staff 
Con- broken 20 year old dishwasher, worn out and cheap furniture, old tv’s, ratty rug in living room, $4000 per week 

Nice view…tired furnishings…expensive 

I'm currently staying here in rm 208 and I love it! The balcony looks over the pool and has a nice partial ocean view. Last update may have been early 2000's but who cares? The beach and surrounding area is beautiful! 10 min to St Armonds circle & 20 min to Siesta key. The unit (2 bedrooms) is very clean & beds are comfy. Perfect vacation for couples or family of 4-5

Beautiful & relaxing

I'm writing this for my mother who doesn't have TripAdvisor.

When we arrived for our 4 month stay in unit 115, there had NOT been a deep clean performed. It was visibly filthy, including dirt and dust all over furniture and bed frames, blood on a pillow, and rusty and old toilet brushes. Over the course of our stay, our maintenance issues were difficult to resolve. We had to personally purchase a replacement oven light because our requests for repair were not acknowledged. An  AC vent was loose and hanging from ceiling. Interior of oven was FILTHY and smokes when we use it. Laundry room was filled to ceiling with owner's belongings, no room for our items. Broken beach chairs, broken drying rack. Very sub-par kitchen outfitting with dirty and stained glasses, cutting boards, etc. Our email to customer service from January a few weeks after arrival was just acknowledged- 8 weeks later, one month before our departure. Pool adequate. Beach beautiful. THIN walls and walking on floors above sounds like elephants- be warned if you rent on first floor. Kitchen stools are constantly DAMP from salt and wet bathing suit exposure from prior renters- complained to management and they belittled my concerns. We are here for FOUR months, so this is not just a small inconvenience, as though we're here for just a week. No vent or fan on stove for cooking in kitchen. This 4 month rental was not cheap, and the cleanliness of this unit should have been seen to, regardless of the length of our stay. TIP: make sure your unit has been refreshed/renovated. The old ones are not worth it.

Review of Unit 115

Used to stay in Lido Beach but hotel was sold so found Sandcay. We stayed in 219. Great spacious apartment, clean, fully equipped with amazing views over the gulf. Staff were super accommodating and full of knowledge.  Second bedroom was a little awkward having a small double and a single bed - the owners definitely need to replace both those beds with a large double and replicate the main bedroom - it's big enough. We managed, but definitely needs a re-think - we had two weeks of sheer bliss staying here though. Free laundry by the pool and fully equipped kitchen, comfortable sitting and dining rooms and a terrace to sit and watch the beautiful sea from. The grounds are kept spotless and enough sun loungers to go round on the beach.  We will be back.
