Absolutely one of the best couples get aways I've taken. When you check in you are greeted with a glass of wine in a welcome area, given a sit-down overview of your visit and then driven up the mountain to the main house and cabins. From there every need is attended to with the most care. Rooms have everything from fireplaces,  heated floors to outdoor showers. If you are a foodie this is the right place, gourmet meals to backpack lunches and craft cocktails. The setting is spectacular with hiking trails and vistas all around.

Pampered at 5,000 Feet

While we were very familiar with The Swag from family and friends who have gone for years and had high expectations for what we would experience, we were surprised with every aspect of our Swag stay surpassing our expectations.  One has to stay there to experience the majesty of the setting.  The staff uniformly treats you like an honored family member who they’ve never met and they treated each other as dearly loved family members as well.  The quality, taste, and uniqueness of the food was at least  equal to or superior to any we’ve enjoyed throughout our travels including a culinary tour in France and most of it is locally sourced.  My gluten free needs were fully covered.  The Sunday Brunch was delightful.   Our daily walks with Artists in Residence Doug and Kathy were delightful, and we loved Doug’s music pre dinner both nights.  There were always little surprises - afternoon homemade ice cream, gifts in the room, unusual puzzles to put together, and a gourmet sack lunch for you to take with you upon checkout to name a few.  We look forward to returning often!

Fifty-six hours of heaven

My husband and I stayed at The Swag in the fall of 2021. Our experience was so magical that we decided that The Swag would be the perfect place to celebrate my parents' 60th Wedding Anniversary. With 5 siblings and 5 spouses from different states accompanying the event, we booked 6 rooms for a 3 nights stay. Guest Services did an amazing job at accommodating our large group and assisted us in reserving the Hummingbird Cottage, Chestnut Lodge, Swag House and the newly remodeled Trinity Cottage. The location is beyond perfection but it was the service, cuisine and accommodations that are truly exceptional. Having beautiful and delicious meals prepared for you 3 times a day allowed more time for us to relax, play cards, sit by the fire, hike, horseback ride and connect with each other. Happy Hour was always a treat at the Swag House as we gathered together to enjoy amazing cocktails by an exceptional bartender! Our favorite meal was the Sunday Brunch! The artists in residence were amazing as well. The entire staff went out of their way to make us feel comfortable. And... everyone wants to return for another family reunion. I recommend a 3 nights stay minimum as 2 nights is just not long enough!

60th Anniversary Celebration

There is nothing like The Swag. You go up a mountain to the welcome center and then taken to the inn. Their attention to detail is outstanding, as well as the food. The rooms are unparalleled. The sunrises and sunsets are beautiful, we have been 3 times.

A very unique place to visit, nothing like it!

The entire experience was absolutely incredible.  From the welcome by Mark and Jim and the tour of the property when we first got there - we knew it was going to be an experience that was much better than we had expected.  And with the price point - we had high expectations.  Everyone knew our names and we got to know the staff quickly along with several guests and looked forward to activities and meals.  We really enjoyed the group of guests we were with.

Accommodations:  We stayed in Trillium, incredible accommodation - private, 2 baths, 2 outside sitting areas, close to main house and over the top decor - simple beautiful.  Only downside, no view but INCREDIBLY private.  We had friends in Gails Room, beautiful views, but not as private...

Food: The food was delicious, thoughtful and well prepared - we did not have ONE bad meal, and that is saying a lot - they feed you 3 full meals a day with many snacks and drinks in between.  I have a food allergy and at EVERY meal, they noted it and adjusted my meal.  Get the SWAG bars, trust me....

Spa:  I had a massage in the "Still" and highly recommend Tina, it was a soothing, calming experience.  The spa is small but well appointed and exactly what I needed. 

Activities:  We tried to ride horses, but it was booked.  We took hikes everyday - using the Nature Trail, Hemphill Bald and the Purchase Knob trails.  We had Janet and Steve as our "experts in residence" and we LOVED their hikes - knowledgeable, funny and felt like 30 minutes as apposed to 3 hours!  Hiking sticks were a nice touch.

SUNRISE;  If there is one activity that is a MUST do, it is sunrise on Gooseberry Knob.  Trust me, it is a spiritual experience.

We had a glitch with our reservation and the staff (Hannah and Will) took care of it immediately and were gracious and thoughtful about the mistake.

I cannot say enough about this resort, we will be going back hopefully in the fall.

Last note - I hope it remains small - there was talk of expanding and adding cabins - I SINCERELY hope it does not get bigger - the intimate feeling and getting to know everyone staying there made the experience more memorable.  

Incredible Experience

This was our first trip to The Swag and we weren’t disappointed! We felt at home with everyone we met and the entire welcome and check in process was flawless. We were treated to a gourmet Sunday brunch with a wide assortment of delicious food. After brunch we went on a trial hike and witnessed views that were  to beautiful to be explained! At dinner we had a 4 course gourmet dinner paired with fine wines that complimented each course. We woke up to beautiful sunrise and proceeded to have a home cooked breakfast with lots of options!
We’ve already booked our stay for November 2023!

Celebrated our 41st wedding Anniversary!

Where do I start…everything about our experience was over the top and exceeded our expectations…which were already high with anticipation!
First, the property at 5000’ is unparalleled and I have travelled the world to incredible places. 
Second, the staff was amazing! One of our servers was an ex-Disney cast member and her training exemplified the entire staff’s customer care. Her name: Stefanie in the dining room! Jill at the front desk was helpful with every question and request! 
Third, the food was amazing….at every meal! Don’t miss the cookies and cream ice cream dessert….very unique! 
Fourth….all levels of hiking available and you’re greeted at check in with your very own personalized walking stick!
I could go on…..call now for a hard to get reservation for next year!!

First Class Experience!

Well, we just completed our 3rd visit to The Swag this season, and like every visit before, it was perfection! Will and team are incredible hosts, and truly make each guest feel at home from the moment they greet you on the phone at the gate til they wave goodbye and send you off with water and snacks for the drive home. We’ve stayed in over half the rooms on the property, and each has its own charm and character, while all contain every comfort you can think of, now including extras like heated bathroom floors and towels! The experts in residence are amazing, and really enhance the hiking experience as well as teach you a few new things along the way. The Thursday music is one of my favorite programs, especially if you’re lucky enough to be there when Grammy-winner Marc Pruett and his wife, Anita, are playing live. And the food…what can I say except it’s consistently exceptional, and the culinary team, too, is prepared to tailor the dishes to your dietary needs and preferences (no fennel for me please). I could go on and on, but the truth is, you have to experience The Swag to truly appreciate it. That is, if you’re lucky enough to get a reservation!

Heaven in the Smokies

We were the SWAG for a three night stay the first week in October 2022 perfect for the early Fall leaf color. Our fourth visit the SWAG. What a great trip!  We hiked several trails in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park adjoining the SWAG Resort, enjoyed a continuous supply of gourmet food, relaxed in a beautiful peaceful quiet forest environment. 
Enjoyed the superb Sunday Brunch, fireplace in our room, the new outdoor sauna and on out last day the picnic. 
Staff were all excellent, could not have been more attentive. 
We have another reservation in the early Spring - Wildflower Season!

The SWAG

My wife and I made our 5th , and certainly not last , visit to the Swag Sept 6-9 and we had the great  opportunity to bring our daughter Meredith along with us for her first visit there . Over the years when we've told her how fantastic staying at the Swag is she's always been puzzled about how a small resort sitting on top of a mountain in Waynesville , NC could be such a big deal . Now she gets it and is looking forward to the chance to make a return visit ! We've been fortunate to be able to do a lot of traveling to many resorts over the decades and how each measures up against the Swag is always our measuring stick . To date NONE have measured up to our time spent at the Swag  . If you haven't been , do yourself a big favor and take a look . You'll never ever regret it .. see y'all again soon Will !
