Very disappointing.  Very basic motel although the location is fantastic.  Had to walk through bird poop to enter the room so I didn’t walk barefoot in the room.  Very small, no place to put luggage or belongings except on the floor     I would not stay here again.

Disappointing motel

This is currently ranked #1 of 1 motels in Manzanita. The hotel is located on the beach and the gorgeous Oregon coastline is all this hotel has going for it. It is old and run down and has given up.

The rooms are still using physical keys. Our room was about 85 degrees when we walked in. No fan was provided or mentioned at check-in, I had to go back to the desk and ask for one.

To get air into the room requires opening full length curtains and windows, making your entire room visible to every person walking by. Not doing it makes the room a pitch black sauna. With the windows open and a portable fan on high, it lowered the temperature to maybe 80 until well after the sun had gone down. Had to sleep with a window open right next to the main thoroughfare. 

Many of the guests seemed to be semi-permanent residents. Cluttered rooms filled with angry, barking dogs, people hanging around on the property outside smoking.

If you're passing through, keep driving

There is a lovely couple who run this motel and they are really nice. You can tell there is an effort made to maintain the property and to make the rooms cute but it is a worn out and tired property. It needs a complete overhaul.  It's not dirty, just old and I suspect moldy.  I do wish them the best and hope that folks keep going so they can keep updating and renovating.  It's a great spot, with a view of the ocean, and close to town. Very affordable as well.  

Tired property with a lot of potential

The best thing about this hotel is its location.  It is one of the few hotel/motel complexes in Manzanita that front the ocean.  There is a road between you and the ocean, but a second floor room has a pretty nice view.  The hotel is old and shows wear, but also some updates.  Room cleaning can be a little  spotty (our room still had food and shoes of a former tenant that we took back to the office).  Room service seems promised due to a request card on all slider doors, but no-one responded to our request.  To get fresh towels, garbage removal, etc., you have to go to the office and ask.  The balcony is actually a walkway so you will be sharing with neighbors.  So privacy is pretty nonexistent, but the hotel was fine as a 2 star and it is quiet at night.

Older hotel with pros and cons

I was to meet my daughter's plane in PDX and take her and my granddaughters for their first view of the Pacific. When their flight was canceled, I had to cancel our reservation at the Sunset Surf. The hotel could have in all fairness, refused a refund and charged me for the entire night. But they didn't, and gave me a full refund. I have no doubt this generosity and integrity is part of their overall business plan.  

Kindness counts

First time staying here but not the first time staying on the Oregon coast🙏🏼♥️. Top floor studio non-pet room Ocean view. 
I really did like the room. We loved how we could cook in room. There is cookware and utensils. We are Vegan so makes it a little easier. There are not a lot of vegan restaurant options around. The fireplace was good off and on. This time of year it’s still a little chilly only because the wind was so damn bad! All in all easy to park, get around, easy access to breathtaking views, hikes etc. good vibes. Quiet. Would recommend and stay again! 

Loved it would stay again

My husband and I visited this morel for the first time. We were very happy with our choice. The location is excellent, the motel is simple but very satisfactory for our needs. The suit was comfortable, large, even with a fireplace. We simply loved it. We might be back soon again.

My first time visiting and staying at Manzanita.

Booked a standard room and requested ground floor over a month prior to my arrival.  When I arrived, the female rep assigned me a room upstairs on the same side as the office instead of my requested ground floor room.  The same rep said there was "no record of my requesting a ground floor room" although my request was e-mailed to the front desk but not acknowledged.  There were no ground floor rooms available on my first night.  She also told me that there "might be a ground floor room available [the next day] and to check with the front desk in the morning".  I thought about refusing the room but I would have been charged so I reluctantly took it.  

I struggled to climb the stairs with luggage and food.  The bed in the original room was lumpy and the refrigerator smelled so bad because the compressor was failing.  The bathroom floor was warped and the vanity was very small.

I checked with the front desk the next morning and the Asian rep guy told me that there was a ground floor room available but it was being cleaned.  After about half an hour, the room was ready but there was no hot water because a part broke.  The rep thought it would take a while for the hot water to be repaired.  I took the room anyway and the hot water came on shortly thereafter.  The next morning I took a shower and the hot water was very tepid and I could not get it any warmer.  The hot water eventually quit working because a part was broken again and they were still trying to fix it at the time I checked out.  Aside from the hot water, the second room was much better than the original one.

Keys were used to open doors in lieu of card locks which was a security concern to me.

If I were to return to this motel, I would choose a studio ground floor to help with my balance issues.  Hopefully the keys will be phased out by card locks by my next visit if the visit occurs.

This was our first time to Manzanita, and we instantly fell in love with the town.  The Sunset Surf Motel was the right choice  for us.  Upon arrival we were greeted by Bob at the office.  He was so helpful getting us checked in and giving some great options for dinner.  We had two rooms on the bottom floor with amazing views of the beach.  This is an older property but we found it very charming and comfortable.  Rooms were very large and spacious. Each one had table and chairs, fridge, microwave, and coffee maker.  
Can't wait to go back.

Charming beachside motel

I don’t write bad reviews because I know experiences are subjective and most small businesses are doing their best. BUT…last night during the heat wave I stayed here with my 8-year old son. At 11:30pm we were forced to move into our car because our room was >90 degrees. I understand AC isn’t a thing at the coast, no problem. The room also did not have a working fan or a screen on the sliding door (west facing),m. So, the only option for cooling the room  was to leave the door ajar. The hotel offers plug-in fans (I learned later). But that would have meant leaving the sliding door wide open while I slept with my kiddo. Not safe. When I called to ask for a refund, Jeremy at the front desk berated me for not contacting the motel to get a fan (again, I didn’t know that was an option and that would have meant leaving the door open), told me ‘most of our customers are locals and know it’s safe here’ (totally dismissing my safety concerns erroneously), cross-examined my timeline (you checked in at 3:45 pm, why didn’t you say something before the office closed?), and then suggested that I could have run the fan with the door closed. When I pointed out that would have made the room even hotter (this causes a convection oven scenario) I was completely dismissed. I suggested proactively offering fans would have been nice, and he said ‘I’ve travelled to 16 states and that’s not the kind of service you get at motels’. Ok, I paid more than $200 to sleep in my car with my son and be berated and made to feel silly for my safety concerns. That’s some great service. I’ve travelled many places too Jeremy, and this is hands down the worst customer experience I’ve ever had. Stay away.
