Booked Howard's Motel based on previous reviews.
Checked out the room before checking in and were pleasantly surprised.
Room had 2 bedrooms, sitting area with big flat screen TV and a bathroom with toilet, vanity and shower.
Place was very quiet although close to I-69.
Breakfast was just coffee and muffins but OK.

Surprised by older property.

This is an older property which is trying to hold on to business between Battle Creek and a lovely town called MARSHALL. Reminiscent of the older post-war motor-hotels HOWARD'S MOTEL continues to offer a very reasonable product for the "budget" traveler in a field of overwhelming big chain and very expensive hotels.
The young lady at the desk was very accommodating over the phone when I made my pre-trip reservation, but when I arrived she was a bit too curt for my liking, especially when emphasizing that there was to be no smoking in my room.
Somewhat ironic because when she assigned me supposed "non-smoking" Room 21 it reeked of years-old embedded cigarette smoke. Fortunately, the maintenance man corrected the problem and gave me the room next door.
The room itself was fairly large and although dated, it was clean and well-maintained. The bedding was fresh and clean and the mattress looked relatively new. There was a newer mini-fridge, microwave and a flat screen TV. The two chairs between the foot of the bed and the wall seemed a bit unnecessary and could be removed for more ease of access to the bed.
Although the bathroom was dated it was clean but a few cleanliness issues in the shower stall such as a massive wad of hair on the drain cover was a bit disgusting.
Overall, this is a reasonable facility for the budget traveler but the reception could do with some improvement.

IT IS WHAT IT IS

We stayed here as it was closest to a dog show in Marshall. This was our second stay and they were going under renovations of their front desk part. It was a little weird and low-tech, but the clerk checked us in and the pricing was correct. The staff was friendly and welcoming. 

The hotel is on a very busy road, but there wasn't much road noise heard from the room. There's also nothing within walking distance, but it's fairly close to a nice downtown area filled with great restaurants and shopping. There are larger grassy areas to walk dogs which is a plus. 

We could easily fit two dogs in the two double bed room with their cages, so the room was fairly good-sized. We had just enough space for our stuff. The rooms are pretty dated, but clean for the most part. The amenities are very simple, but they have a mini-fridge and microwave which are squeezed into the room. 

The A/C worked well and wasn't too noisy. Beds were clean with basic bedding and a few small, flat pillows. We had a small table and chair too, but earned it to make more room for cages. We used WiFi and it worked pretty well—no big issues.

The bathroom is pretty small and only had a stand up shower. It was clean, but pretty worn. There was NO counter space at all for items, so getting ready in the morning was a challenge. They have a tiny shelf by the mirror and that was it. We got a few soaps and tear packets of shampoo, that was it. You may want to bring your own stuff since they have bare bones basics. 

The property felt pretty safe even though there wasn't much around. Overall a decent stay for a budget hotel and a quick stay. We'd go back again.

Decent stay w/dogs, nice staff, decent rooms, not much around

Starting with the positive, the room was clean and the air conditioner new. There was a fridge and microwave. The maintenance man was very friendly and helpful.
I had stayed at this motel a few times in the past, years ago, and the best thing about it was the wonderful outdoor pool. I was so disappointed to see what used to be the pool is now a pile of dirt. See photo. Was told it had been gone for four years. Why covered over? And why still such an eyesore?
The pet policy is rather odd - see photo of it. It says, "Only service animals are allowed in guest rooms." I think that means allowed without a charge, but the wording made me think they expected me to keep my dog in the car. For an additional $10 per night. Which they "reserve the right to waive... if we choose to do so." I wonder what one has to do to get the fee waived?
There are large grassy areas on which to walk a dog. Kept mowed and debris-free, apparently.
There were only three electrical outlets in the room I was in, none of them anywhere near the bed, and the lamp that was plugged in was on a table too far from the bed to allow the lamp to be used to read in bed by, and I had to use the flashlight app on my phone to get back to the bed after turning off the lamp.
The TV was off and on, and this necessitated several conversations with, and visits from, the maintenance man and the manager. Evidently most rooms had this problem. It was eventually corrected.
The sink drained very slowly.
There is no ice available, except for a dozen or so cubes in a plastic bad supplied on request from the owner - who is not a very friendly young woman.
No in-room coffee. Available from the front office only.
This is an older motel with old furniture, but as I said it was clean and cool on a very hot day. If you don't expect much, it's OK, I guess. Sure did miss the pool.

Good and bad

Stayed here many times. Never no issue. Room 13 has huge bed bugs. Turned the covers back and huge bed bug on the white blanket.left minutes later.was disgusted never called front desk. Just left. Grossed out.

There were fleas in the beds, and the room had the odor of smoke and dirty carpets.  The mattresses were practically bare wire.  The receptionist didn't know we were coming and scolded me for not calling the hotel itself after making an internet reservation.  We left and went somewhere else.

We have stayed at Howards Motel for years when going to Brooklyn to the NASCAR race. Had always been clean and to our satisfaction. in the past. Bathrooms were not cleaned adequate. We had doubts the bedding had been changed from previous guest.
Our friends that were in room next to us came to us after getting ready to crawl into bed. They pulled covers back and sheets were full of dog hair. I mean it looked like one of the people that were at the dog show clipped the dog before show. Not just normal dog hair shedding. Both beds were the same. Last time at Howards

terrible housekeeping

I stayed here before and was back in town so made a reservation telling them I will be late getting there. I came in watched tv until about 1 am Oct.7,2018 Sunday morning.I pulled back the covers to a dirty sheet and some sort of nasty bug. I tried to call the office and and room phone not working. I called on my cell and got the answering machine leaving a message about what I found. I got dressed and rang the doorbell at the office and no answer. I spent 3  hours trying to find a clean hotel with a room available, getting into one, and another $92, at 4 am to get up by 8:30 am. I went back to the Howard hotel this morning, still no return call from my message of the issues, and talked to the manager she told me I never left a message even when I showed her on my phone I called her at 1:24 am. She said I did not ring their doorbell either.She would not refund my money saying I should have told her in the first half hour I got the room to get a refund. She said she was booked and could have rented out my room if she knew. On the web I saw there was at least 3 room open.She said I need to show her the receipt of the other hotel which was on my phone but she didn't care. I will never come back!.
