Do yourself the favor and pay extra NOT to stay here. But let me start off by saying some things I  did like about the Clipper Inn, the cleaning staff was amazing, super nice and accommodating. The walk to all the shops, restaurants, tourist attractions, etc in Salem was just about a mile, so easy to walk to which was fantastic! Now, let me get to the negative aspect of the Clipper Inn. The women at the front desk was extremely rude, not just on one occasion, but the whole weekend. Everything was an issue, and she wanted to charge us for every extra thing. I had a third person stay in the room with us which was unplanned, the room was a suite, with two beds and pull out couch. She charged us an extra $80 for the person to stay... I have never had that happen before. My family and I were standing in the parking lot making plans for the day and she comes out and counts the people in our group and asking us questions, it was so uncomfortable. Once we started walking to town, she gets in her truck and starts going in the same direction we are walking. She slows down behind us and is driving behind us for a few before driving away, it was so bizarre. She also called my family member staying the same weekend and canceled their room the night before for Saturday night. THE NIGHT BEFORE, like what kind of system do you have that you don't notice overbooking until one night before? They were going to stay in our room that night since they didnt have a room and she wanted to charge them an extra $50!!! Like are you kidding me? Other staff was great!

Steer Clear!

I decided to go with my husband to Salem at the last minute at the end of October. I know, I know…the Clipper Ship Inn was the only one hotel available and it was worth it. The staff was friendly. The room was clean. It had all of the amenities that I needed at the time while being a little under a mile walk from the main square. I would stay here again.

Last Minute…Nice Time

First I made reservation months in advance . Was charged $389 for one night ! But we wanted to see Salem . We haven’t been in years . Didn’t want to have to drive to downtown area . Was told walking distance ( not ) . Room was outdated . Place was not packed as they had said. They were doing me a solid giving us a room for one nite . The deodorizer they used in room was gross . Gave us bad headache … asked for receipt of room . Manager wanted to know why ??? Very rude . Other half of motel looked like is was for low income…. Never again

Stop over

My mother and I stayed her for 3 nights the weekend of October 24th from Boston to enjoy Halloween in Salem. Our time in Salem was great but it was slightly brought down by the awfulness of the Clipper Ship Inn, particularly due to the "manager".

Here were the major CONS of the motel:
- Beds, towels and pillows were stiff and old. Neither of us slept well because of how bad the beds were.
- The female manager/owner is CRAZY and rude. Please understand, I am not one of those customers who expects to be treated like a Queen, just with basic respect. The manager treated us, especially my mom with contempt & disrespect from the get-go. When my mother went to check out, she screamed at my mom for writing a negative review about the Inn on Expedia (which we didn't do). When my mother tried to stand up for herself, but the manager wouldnt listen. I approached the manager afterwards and she again accused us of writing a negative review as if no one else was staying at the motel this weekend. I told her I don't leave reviews on Expedia but I do on TripAdvisor and I'd certainly leave one now. She threatened to call the cops on us.
In short, this place wasn't worth the $350 per night. The manager treated us so poorly we left Salem on a terrible note. PLEASE believe the negative reviews and DO NOT STAY HERE.

Please Don't Stay Here - Not Worth Money & Manager is NUTS

I must say I was terrified to stay here after reading some reviews but the bad ones couldn’t be farther from the truth. I stayed here one night in October to experience Salem. I was immediately greeted with kindness. The front woman was extremely helpful & even let us check in early! I was told 4pm checkin but arrived around 12pm and was given access to my room nonetheless. After checkin she took the time to explain the main / best things to do in Salem & how we are walking distance from there. 

The room was spacious and tidy. I really enjoyed the space aspect of it. I saw cleaning staff throughout my whole stay keeping the rooms & grounds clean.

The best thing about this hotel is the price and location. You have access to parking & can walk within 10-15 min to all of Salem’s main attractions. Since parking is limited in town this is a huge help & I know my car is safe back at the Clippers Ship Inn. 

Across the street is a convenience store and a Dunkin’ Donuts. 

I really enjoyed my stay here & highly recommended for anything visiting Salem, especially during busy/ expensive Halloween season.

Bang for your buck

Nice little hotel. We stayed in a double queen suite and all amenities were provided. They were very good about switching out towels every day. At check in the receptionist gave us recommendations of what to see and where to eat. Its about a 15 minute walk into town or you could use the taxi cab they referred us to which was only $7 a trip. 2 minute walk to Dunkin, a convenience store, and a  restaurant called 99 Restaurant which had excellent service and food!

Highly recommend!

Perhaps the rudest staff I have ever encountered. The rooms are sufficient for a 2 star hotel, but their treatment of guests is unacceptable. They charge fees anyway they can to get additional money. I booked a 2 bedroom room and got a king room, to which they then charged me an 75.00 upgrade fee, followed it up with a 50.00 charge for a third guest, and then after making me carry my own trash bins down to the office, charged me 20.00 because they couldn’t find a wash cloth. 

Adding these fees together you can stay at a three to four star hotel that’s closer to downtown Salem for the same price. 

Terrible experience.

Pay Extra and Stay Elsewhere

I have no clue how this hotel has 3.5/5 customer reviews! So first let me tell you how we pulled up to the “welcome center” aka lobby to be greeted by a mountain of trash. Then I go into said lobby to see cats and clutter everywhere. A grumpy man checked me in. Asked me no less than 4x how many people were staying in the room. Our room was at the end of an extremely dark exterior hallway (check my pic). The door to the rooms have a BEDROOM doorknob. No deadbolt, no latch, no chain, nothing. Literally a little push lock. If the “tenants” weren’t so shady looking it may have not been so bad. There were people that were up ALL DAY & NIGHT. With doors open, smoking weed and drinking, yelling at each other. So scary for us. We barricaded the door every night. The 3 acres of “beautiful scenery” is trees, construction, and a run down, possibly abandoned housing plan literally in the same lot. The room itself looks like every item in there was picked up off the side of the road for free and placed in the room. Some type of weird half sectional, a bed with no headboard and hairs on the pillow upon entering, a commercial toilet that you can’t flush in the middle of the night because it’s so loud it’ll wake the entire hotel up. Air conditioners that were probably the first model ever made. It’s like they’ve put zero effort into trying to update anything. They also put a $100 hold on my card for “incidentals” which was just so ridiculous I had to laugh. This place is NOT worth what they are charging at all. On our second day a lady yelled at us “Are you checking in?!” We replied no. Then said  “Are you leaving?” We said no again. “WELL WHAT ARE YOU DOING?” Us- “Going into town” Just unfriendly. If everything wasn’t sold out we would’ve went somewhere else. Luckily we were in town the majority of the time.

Wouldn’t recommend.

My friend and I stayed at the Clipper Ship Inn for 3 nights in late May. The hotel is average, the rooms are large but very dated. The hotel is roughly 25 mins walk away from the town cente but close to a restaurant and liquor store. Free parking is handy. Any positives about this establishment are diminished by the appalling attitude of Sue who I assume is the manager. She was rude from the moment we arrived to the moment we left. She accused us of stealing towels and almost kept our deposit hostage, she refused to let me borrow a bottle opener and instead told me to walk to the liquor store in the middle of a storm, she charged us 25 dollars to check in late!!! She also asked a veteran who was staying in the same block what mental issues he had because he asked to use the fridge. In summary, if you want a nice vacation without any drama don't stay here.

Horrendous staff

Be careful if you book a reservation here from an online site.  There was no mention of payment in full at the time of booking.  I was surprised to receive a call from someone the day after I booked asking for my full credit card details and wanting payment in full 3 months in advance of the reservation!  I understand a deposit, but if I was required to pay in full at the time of booking, that should have been mentioned upfront.  When I said I would not disclose my full credit card information and that I would cancel my reservation, they went ahead and went to the website and cancelled it --I never had the chance to let the booking website  know that the property's policies were changed.   Be careful--be wary.
