wife ordered a poke bowl very small; the bowl was so big.
I ordered fish of the day sandwich it was basically tartar sauce and Lettice sandwich 
we left and went to Freddy's Js had a very good meal i hope they get act together it could be a good spot

good place for a drink not a  good place to eat

Sat outside to enjoy the lake and nice weather - food selection and quality was average.  Prices are very, very high.  We had one drink each, shared an appetizer, salad with salmon and lobster roll sandwich $110 with 20% tip .  paid cash since it's a additional 3% to use a credit card.

July 2024 experience

Beautiful Outdoor dining. We went for lunch  and it wasn't too crowded. My friend ordered the fried shrimp and I ordered the Crab cake special and both were delicious. ! We sat at the bar and had great service. People were very friendly too. I will be coming back!

Beautiful Waterfront dining.

We stayed here last minute on a Saturday night in October 2022. We booked directly through the hotel rather than Priceline and somehow the total came out $10 more - not a big deal, but why? They also didn’t seem to have anyone dedicated to the hotel, as a bartender helped with our room booking. We had dinner and drinks and the food was decent with good service. The location is pretty but on a busy road. The building itself needs some repairs and some cosmetic touch ups. Our room was comfortable (Minnie Moore room) but the sheets didn’t fit the bed so they kept coming off during the night. The fireplace didn’t work (no gas). Our bathroom was okay but none of the towels matched (all white but didn’t match). The breakfast and coffee bar wasn’t worth anything - no spoons for yogurt, no to-go coffee cups, only dark roast coffee, prepackaged unhealthy muffins. 

There is so much potential here - the restaurant is decent and the house could be beautiful. Plus it is a historic home. I hope someone gives it some love.

So much potential, but not quite there

I read some of the bad reviews and am confused because none of them correspond with my experience.  Here’s what I personally think people should know:

It’s a lovely historic B&B - yeah, it’s not super fancy, but my room was lovely, with a super comfortable bed, and a window unit air conditioner (which I LOVE because even with central air it was a bit warm for me in this heat wave.) 

There’s a cute little set up in the hallway with muffins, yogurt, a Keurig, and cold water bottles that you can access at any time. There was no mini-fridge (I didn’t really expect it) in the room, though, so be aware of that. 

Yes, it’s not staffed 24/7, but the owner or manager is very accessible through text, and for me, personally, I don’t see anything wrong with this. You get a key and can easily go in and out. It WAS a little confusing on check in because the doors were locked and I didn’t know what to do at first, but when I went down to the outdoor restaurant they got the owner/manager right away and she checked me in, showed me where stuff was, and a staff member helped me with my bags. If you are coming in, just know to check down by the restaurant or message them before hand. 

Also, the price is super reasonable, especially for the lovely location so close to AC and the beach! There’s also another bar/restaurant right across from the b&b. I, personally, would happily stay here again if in this area and would absolutely recommend it to others.

Great and Affordable Place to Stay

Manager was unfriendly at check inn. We felt unwelcome. Room was dark and tiny and not what we expected based on pictures we had seen. There was no closet in the room. 
The indoor Restaurant is closed in the summer. The outdoor restaurant is a tacky, honky~tonk bar suitable for low budget twenty year olds. We went elsewhere for dinner. When we returned around 10:00 PM the live music at the bar just outside our window was blasting away making sleep impossible. We packed up and left.

More than disappointing

I would not be writing this particular review if we had not been personally and aggressively confronted by the manager at our check-out while on our way to a family funeral. When we refused to “discuss” our concerns with her at that specific moment, she became more incensed and antagonistic.

We secured reservations at the Inn at Sugar Hill in Mays Landing because we needed a place to stay overnight to be local to the funeral site. We told the manager that we were arriving from out of state and may be a late check-in. She stated that she closes-up at 9:00 PM. Armed with that information we decided to have family member, who would arrive earlier,  secure our room keys for us. That evening with a “Northeaster” raging, we abandoned our earlier plans, and proceeded directly to the Inn, arriving at 7:25 PM. Since others had our room keys, we thought we could at least get out of the raging rain and wind and sit in a parlor to await their return. However, upon our arrival, we found the entire Inn was dark and locked! In the dark and torrential rain we finally located, by flashlight, an emergency number posted on the building. By this time we were soaked to the bone! The response from the manager on our 7:41 PM “emergency call” was that she left early because of the horrible weather and already was more than 15 minutes away – what did we expect her to do since she had already given the set of room keys to a family member? 
What did we expect!?? We expected the Inn to be opened until 9:00 as told. We assumed, as guests, that the manager would return to let us into the Inn and so we at least could wait inside for those with our room keys. We expected the minimal hospitality that we assumed would be extended us as paying guests. 

The Inn at Sugar Hill, billed as a “Bed and Breakfast,” is in a lovely location. Part of the Inn is a restaurant, and during the pandemic, we understand dining has been limited to outside. The parlor and communal rooms on first floor were locked and used for storage. The guest rooms were clean and small as to be expected in an older converted home. However, the guest rooms need some touch-ups (like replacing torn and peeling wallpaper, new fire detectors (the yellowed color usually indicates the fire detector is old, and obsolete) and better carbon monoxide detectors appropriately placed). The “breakfast” part of our B&B consisted of individually wrapped Hostess brand muffins and slices of poundcake, and Keuric coffee. This should be unacceptable given that there is an operational  commercial kitchen in the building! Since there is no manager staying on the premises, what happens in case of an emergency like fire, accident, or illness? And, did we say our room was $200+ per night (taxes included).

In reviews of this Inn I have found recent accounts from others who have complained about the management and being locked out prior to the “officially stated” closing. So, again, in response to the question of what did we expect--We expected the inn’s management to maintain the stated operational hours, management that knows how to care for customers and create a welcoming environment for guests, management that responds in a calm and responsible way to customer concerns, and management that can respond appropriately to emergencies. We also expected a manager of an Inn to have another set of keys, or at very least a master key! We expected courtesy and professionalism from an enterprise that is based on hospitality -- and that was not what we received. 

Lastly, given the limited access to the larger Inn, and the lack of an appropriate breakfast, The Inn at Sugar Hill should be advertised as “Guest Rooms Only” not a B&B. What a horrible and disappointing experience!

The Inn at Sugar Hill: Not Ready for Prime Time, Inclement Weather, or Inconvenience to the Manager

It could be nice, but it’s not ready for prime time yet.  They are working on the first floor, so no sitting area or dining room.  The bedrooms are all different and pretty comfortable, with queen beds and private bathroom.  Some with the sink in the bedroom some with a slightly larger bathroom.  The issue I have is that it’s a “Bed and Breakfast”, therefore I expect breakfast.  Not store bought BelVita breakfast cookies and packaged muffins.  Yes, they had coffee (thank goodness) and the packaged stuff is available 24/7, but freshly made danish or even donuts from Dunkin, would be better than packaged variety.  They did have yogurt and cereal available too, but that just isn’t what a B&B is about.

Another issue we had was with the owner, her customer service leaves a lot to be desired!  “I’m sorry” tends to go a long way and if she learned that lesson she might do well.

Not ready for customers yet!

The Inn was clean but dated. Get rid of ripped curtains and invest in some shades.  Clean up that peeling wallpaper. NO!!!
Continental breakfast was sad. Coffee yuk. Just step up and make it a bit classier. Make fresh ground coffee and at least offer real half and half on ice.  Have a free happy hour and some more breakfast choices. This real estate is prime! Needs a lot of work but it can be done. 

Meal by the river was ok. My white wine was served on no ice and no cups. Just brought a bottle to the table and left.  Obviously a young untrained person. Don’t forget to manage these ones!
There is so much potential! Loved the idea of it but didn’t meet the standard.

We made the best of it!

One night stand with my husband

We loved our stay at this inn. Our room, the “Captain Babcock” was clean and quaint. The inside of the inn was lovely. The innkeeper, Joe, was very attentive. Even though he could not keep freshly baked muffins and pastries out for the breakfast portion of the stay due to covid, he went out super early to buy prepackaged muffins, bananas, yogurt, and other treats. There was a keurig and half and half available as well. 
My boyfriend and I loved sitting outside for dinner as it was by the water and there was live music which gave it a great ambiance. We had one slight issue. While waiting to be seated for dinner, the hostess forgot to call us. We had waited a little over an hour and the music and drinks helped us forget how much time had gone by. When I went to check if our table was ready, I noticed they had already set up napkins and silverware on the hostess stand, covering the list of names. They were setting up for the next day and there were about 3 tables available and no one waiting. When I asked if our table was ready, they sat us immediately. Service was great and we were well taken care of so I really think it was just an oversight. Things happen. The food was good as well. I had a crab cake and my boyfriend had a burger. The drinks were pretty strong and we were feeling nice. If ever in the area, it’s definitely a place to check out.
