I cannot recall the last time we stayed in a motel, but when we needed a place for only three nights and we wanted to be in Douglas, The Pines popped up in my search. I am so glad it did. Our stay was delightful in this updated lodging. The king bed and pillows were comfortable, there was ample storage allowing us to completely unpack, good reading lights, a small but adequate bathroom, and comfortable sitting areas both inside and outside our room and around a nearby fire ring.

Our host offered coffee each morning and we were able to stash drinks and snacks in the room fridge.

We really enjoyed our stay and it will be our first choice any time we're in the area for shorter visits.

Charm, comfort, nostalgia -- a truly elevated motel experience!

So glad I found this place when looking on-line for somewhere to stay in the Saugatuck-Douglas area!  We booked it last minute, and then our plans changed the day before we were set to arrive.  But since there are no cancellations/refunds, we decided to still go so we wouldn't be out the money.  Very glad we did because it's just the cutest, coziest place. The special touches are great, including classic music playing softly outside (it turns off at night), ice and corkscrews left outside for your convenience, the patio area to sit and have a drink before dinner, read a book, or just relax and the retro fridge and microwave in the rooms. With Saugatuck just a 5 minute drive away, it was a great location. We've been coming to the area for over 25 years and will be sure to stay here the next time we are there! And thank you to Steve for changing our room to the King bed since it became available after we booked the 2 double bed room :)

Cozy place to stay, super convenient

We have stayed her several times.  It's such a cute place.  Very clean with cute decor.  There is a lovely outdoor area in the middle of the property for lounging if you want. There are pretty flowers and each unit has Adirondack chairs right outside. The owners are very nice and welcoming.  Everything you need is right here in this cute little motor lodge. We stop here on our way up to northern Michigan once or twice a year-it's about the halfway point from where we live to the Charlevoix/Petoskey area.   It's a great location.  You can walk to both Saugatuck and Douglas from the motor lodge-although it's a bit of a hike to Saugatuck.   We love both towns-Douglas is small and quaint with some nice restaurants and galleries.  Saugatuck is larger and on the Kalamazoo River and has lots to do.     

Always a lovely place to stop

Upon arriving the place was clean, good sized room, beds and pillows were Ok.  We got upended because of the recent tornado and power outages so ended up swapping Friday and Saturday ($300 per night) for Sunday and Monday stay ($150 per night).  We were thankful they weren't booked the later days, or we would have been out our $600 as no refunds.  I did ask, since the Sun - Mon stay was half the cost, if we could use the difference in a future booking and was told no.  I thought that was bad business only because it was no skin off their backs since the place wasn't sold out on the days we ended up there, and it cost them nothing.  Just as well since we wouldn't have wanted to return again.  While it is a cute place it's was disappointing not to have curtains.  We had blinds and curtain rods, but no curtains hanging, and the room got pretty lit up lit at dawn.  Good luck sleeping in.  The bathroom was weird as the toilet paper was a reach around where it should have been 8" in front of toilet lip, and yes there is room.  The glass shelf over the sink is definitely a head banger and it should have been over the toilet.  (You're welcome I'm a retired builder) Lastly, I want to note that when we checked in we had 2 bath towels and 1 bar of soap.  You do know there's a giant lake a mile away and people want to clean up before dinner? They also don't want to pass the soap between the sink and the shower so 2 bars of soap would have been great.  Room service issue?  I guess since we had no clean towels the following day after a day at the beach.  We saw a young lady with the cart when we left, but she didn't service our room.  My wife went to the office and Steve told her we don't service the rooms.  What?  We just needed CLEAN towels!  Overall, this was disappointing for the money.  We love the area up and come every year, just better managed places around town.

Could have been nicer...

We make a point of stopping in Saugatuck/Douglas on our way to Northern Michigan.  We ALWAYS stay at The Pines.  Besides being owned and operated by the finest folks you could ever hope to meet - the Pines is an easy walk to some wonderful dinig optons in Douglas.  It is great to stretch your legs after a long day in the car and enjoy a really nice meal.  
The atmosphere at The Pines is congenial and peaceful.  The rooms are great and the bedding guarantees a great nights sleep.  


Stay at The Pines!

We were recommended to the Pines and am happy we booked. The retro feel of this 14 room Lodge is inviting and comfortable. While the rooms are not that spacious the overall environment is relaxing and inviting. Loved sitting on the deck with morning coffee and pre dinner cocktails. Gardens are lovely and well taken care of. This is not your grandparents roadside motel. The owners have taken great care in providing a unique and safe lodging experience. And I say experience. If you want a hotel experience with all the services the Pines is not the place. Set your expectations to relax in the peace and quiet. Great location with a very short drive to everything the area offers. My hats off to Steve for bringing the property back and putting so much personal time and effort into it. Looking forward to coming back.

Relaxing Long Weekend

This place was $220 a night. For that amount, I expect not to be able to hear the verbatim conversations of people in the next room. I also expect the free "breakfast" that ends at 9 a.m. to begin sooner than 8:30 (we had been told it started at 7) and that it's more than warmed-over grocery store pastries.

Other than that, the place is clean and location is fine. Just way, way too expensive for what you get. The confirmation email claims they aren't offering housekeeping for "safety" reasons, but come on.

Not worth the money

We stayed at the Pines for a long weekend in beautiful Saugatuck. The room was very, very clean! We walked to Saugatuck (20 min walk) and Douglas (minutes), and loved having a grocery store nearby. It was a short drive to Oval Beach and Mt. Baldhead, too. The outdoor seating deck was great. Everything was very quiet and the beds were extremely comfortable. We didn't partake in the breakfast or coffee service, there were too many great restaurants to try! The owner was very responsive to communications and super friendly. Would stay again anytime and recommend to friends/family!

You can't go wrong!

Same day book and cancellation due to an unforeseen obligation. The cancellation was greater than 14 days for a refund according to the lodges fine print, but the owner elected to keep $50 as a “Processing fee” if we didn’t re-book. We did so at another establishment out of principle. It just left a bad taste.

No thanks

We loved our stay at The Pines Motor Lodge. The room was very clean and nicely furnished. We loved the common seating area in the courtyard for guests - it was quiet and relaxing. A Continental breakfast was even available (despite Covid), and we felt very safe enjoying our morning meal there. Steve, the owner, was very welcoming and patient - our arrival was delayed by two hours (thanks, Indiana) and he was great about waiting for us to arrive so we could get checked in. We will definitely stay here again.
