I would just like to take a minute to describe my experience here. From the time I walked in the door, the staff and owner were very kind and compassionate. The room was very clean and smelled lemon fresh. The bed was comfortable and the WI-FI was excellent. I honestly have nothing but wonderful things to say about this motel. I would be thrilled to stay here anytime I am in town. 

Outstanding Motel

Moldy rooms,  got sick staying here.  We finished job early and they don’t give refunds….. Stated on a sign you can’t see inside,  no ice, no pop machine. Some rooms have mold growing on the walls, and on the back of the bathroom doors.  Smells moldy,  old tvs,  hard beds….


Smelly and Old

Was concerned after making booking and read previous reviews. Those people who wrote those reviews must have been in a different motel. Staff were so friendly and helpful. The pool was sparkling, the gardens were immaculate and my room just perfect. I had the king room. Spotless in every way.  Shower great. No complaints at all. Would highly recommend this property to travellers. You won’t be disappointed .

Comfort in Charlestown

DO NOT STAY HERE!! NOT DISABILITY FRIENDLY. Treats lone women travellers with young children like they are dirt. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!! ESP if u want a late checkin past 10pm! Severe lack of communication between booking staff and the abusive night manager/caretaker!! Made people who hold car disability permits, park as far away from the room as possible.

Room was very old and outdated. Having done a few years in hospitality and housekeeping in resorts for over 5yrs - I could pick it to pieces. However the major issues were a very small step leading up into the bathroom could be a OH+S issue for elderly and disabilities. Lack of Power points (only one in a family room), bad quality/thin pillows, and no towel rack in the bathroom. 

Short story - Accepted terms in a verbal communication contract (accepted our booking and a specific late checkin time of 11/11:30) and then threatened to void said contract and throw us out on the street when we arrived at said time!! 

Made people who hold car disability permits, park as far away from the room as possible - even tho there were plenty right near the stairs we needed to use. Absolute disgusting and appalling behaviour by the night manager “Shaun” - abusing me (a middle aged woman with a mobiliity disability and two small children under 3 who have occasional bouts of car sickness) for “arriving late” (11:15pm), even tho the late checkin had been pre- arranged.  Also travelling with my elderly mum - who has a disability as well. If I could leave zero stars I would! Room was old and has OH+S issues! 

Long story - Travelling from Canberra to Newcastle on a Sunday evening (left approx 6pm) with my two small kids under 3 (who have occasional bouts of car sickness) & my mum who is elderly. Both of us also have disabilities. Myself in particular - born with poor mobility issues - (trying to avoid a wheelchair/mobility scooter for now), and for which I have a disability permit to allow me to park as close as possible to locations and events.  

I never spoke personally with the Motel at all. My husband was at home on the Sunshine Coast and communicated to whoever answers their business phone number. In this instance - the person who answered (and the person my husband spoke to on the phone) was female. 

The initial communication were  enquires about room availability and late check in. Which there was (we booked a family room with a king + 2 singles and late check in was 10/10.30pm. Verbal agreement was made over the phone that we would accept the room offer. No questions were asked about how many cars we had (and my husband didn’t think to give that information. In hospitality - these questions are normally asked by the staff - as customers do not normally know a policy from hotel to hotel. All are different. 

Once we got moving from Canberra and had filled up our cars with fuel, the GPS advised arrival time would be between 11/11:30pm. Knowing this might cause an issue - I asked my husband to phone the motel back and ask if this would be too late. I also suggested that we could offer to pay over the phone to secure the room. The response given was that she (the same female from the initial communication and who had accepted the verbal agreement that we would take the room) would phone “Shaun” the night manager and confirm. She would let us know if there was an issue. 

As we heard nothing back from her, we assumed that the arrival time was ok and continued to the motel. We arrived at 11:15pm. I saw the note on the window that reception had closed and to phone “Shaun” - which I proceeded to do. When I provided my name and that I had a reservation, Shaun said “and you were supposed to arrive an hr and 15mins ago!” I apologised and said “we“ (meaning one of us who had made the booking - not me personally) had phoned ahead to advise of the late checkin and were told we would get a call back if was an issue - but never received that call. He responded with “yea never mind I’m on my way”.

When he opened the door, I apologised again, and reiterated how we had phoned ahead but clearly that message had not been relayed to him. He muttered something I couldn’t hear and just oozed absolute attitude - he had an issue right from answering my call and there was nothing I could say or do that was going to “satisfy” him. Which obviously really got my back up. I don’t know what more we could have done! We communicated as much as possible! There were several words back and fourth between us, and I did not hide my frustration at his blatant lack of understanding. I went to take the receipt he held in his hands - thinking he was giving it to me - really just wanting to get the key and get my kids to bed!  He then went off on a rant about how I shouldn’t snatch the receipt - that it was his copy and not mine and if I didn’t drop the attitude he was going to refund me and refuse us the service. I asked “so you would throw two women travelling alone and two young kids out? He said “yes”. Throughout the transaction  he made constant remarks about how they are fully booked, that he should be charging me for a late checkin AND an extra car. After calling me a liar (apparently me changing the story from “we had phoned” to then saying “my husband had phoned” is a “furphy”) - He finally gave me the key. I took it and went to walk out. He then said can you park one car there, and one car over there. As I had my back turned (and frustration from the whole encounter) I asked him to say it again because I didn’t see where he had pointed. Clearly - annoyed now because I had given attitude back, he said “well now you can park them both over there and if you don’t drop the attitude you can leave. I shook my head, gave him a disgusted look, and left.  Even tho there were car spaces available right in front of where we needed to go, we parked in the place he said we had to. There were a lot of free car spaces - but I guess he needed to assert “his authority“ over a woman one last time!!

Although the rating from 2010 was bad we had a family emergency and came in from Colorado.  The owner helped us get our reservations and did it 3 times as we had to change due to a hospice situation.  They put us in a ground floor room and other relatives as well in 3 other rooms. They have just redone the bathrooms and every room had a microwave and small refrigerator as well as wifi included.  Water pressure in the new showers was good but not in the sink, enough to brush your teeth and wash your face.  The carpet and walls could use some freshening up but the beds were new and very comfortable.  Yes we know 4 star and up hotels and this is not it, but that being said it was quiet and clean.  Yes there are people who live there week to week but no one bothered us and made no noise.  It was 100 degrees and the air conditioner worked perfectly.  For a couple of days stay and the convenience near where we needed to be it was fine and half the price of the fancy hotel by the highway.  Nothing special but a clean shower and new bed made the 4 day stay just fine.

Not bad for the price!

this is a terrible place. the rates are low but it isn't a safe place to be. there were people loitering on the sidewalk "inspecting" our things as we carried them in. the car parked beside ours was broken into during the night.  it seemed that most of the rooms are occupied by people who "live" there and roam from room to room all night smoking and drinking on the sidewalk.

it was very noisy, the floor was filthy and the internet did not work. The deadbolt on the door would hardly lock and the knob was about to fall off. you could see daylight all the way around the door.

we did not feel safe at all there and felt we had to take our things with us even if we were only going out for a short time.

do not take your family here!!
