Our room, Pheasant Dreams, was very comfortable.   The carpet looks a bit tired and the soaps/shampoos are terrible but breakfast was great!  We loved the location, central to all things Napa.   Hennessey House has been sold since I made my original reservation.  I had to cancel in March but was given a voucher which was very nice of the new owners to do.   I'm sorry to have missed the hospitality of the previous owner, but overall our stay was definitely worth the money.

Overall, a very nice place to stay

Charming and spacious rooms in a lovely setting and walking distance to downtown Napa shops and restaurants. Charlie was a great host and cook and the breakfasts were amazing! Lovely outdoor seating area to enjoy the complimentary wine in the afternoon

Lovely B&B in great location in Napa

As many have said the lack of owner presence and impersonal feel is a big con of this place. They also clearly don’t want to spend the money to keep it running as it used to be. Wine social hour was nonexistant. When we came down to see about it, the staff poured us a glass of wine but said they no longer do cookies and cheese and don’t even set wine out. We stayed in the upstairs hideaway which was cute although no fridge but we could use the main fridge. The highlight of the stay was the proximity to downtown and Charlie who made the delicious breakfasts and was welcoming. He stays on the property.

I guarantee this is not what you are dreaming of when you think Napa B&B. 

Pros:  This room would be a solid AirBnb given the excellent location and cleanliness. Would even be a 5/5 AirBnb if priced better. 

Cons:  Such an impersonal stay. Check in is via email. There are no hosts to greet you or give recs. The “wine pouring series” does not exist.  The welcome email describes a tasting of 2 wines on the patio as weather permits or inside  -  there was nobody in the patio or common rooms during the wine tasting times. When I emailed about it, I was provided a bottle of wine (already opened and half empty) by a very nice staff member.

Neutral: Can’t report on breakfast as we are leaving to go back to SF too early for the 1 hour breakfast window. Typical quirks of an older property like sink that takes a long time to empty. Also - hot water heater is broken. Not able to use the claw foot tub or take a hot shower. Partial refund was given accordingly. 

Contactless stay

This Victorian House offers nicely decorated rooms. After inquiring we did get a complimentary upgrade to a nicer room located at the adjacent building that was very much appreciated. Unfortunatelly the fireplace was not working. The hotel is very well located in walking distance to the Wine Train station and most importantly back from the Wine Train Station :). Breakfast is nicely cooked and staff is very friendly. I wish the radio would be tuned to a better station or off :). Overall a great option for a stay at Napa if you are looking to enjoy not only the valley but also the town and the Wine Train. 

Good Napa boutique B&B option in the town.

Before you book this B&B we would advise you not to rely on the website but read the recent (January 2023+) reviews. Previous reviews and those on the website reflect the standard offered by the previous owners and not the current ones. This B&B is under new absentee owners and they appear to have no committment to quality of service and it is seriously over priced if this is the standard they continue to offer.  We stayed 2 nights and were very disappointed in our stay.  The B&B is seriously understaffed in the kitchen and although breakfast on our first day was at best marginal, the second day it was inedible. There is noone to welcome you, no information about the B&B, breakfast tables are not set out ahead of time and made to look inviting, the cookies and wine offered on the website are non existant. It was more like a basic airB&B with a code to enter and find your own way to your room... extremely impersonal. Our suggestion is to look for a different place to stay, we certainly won't be back.

A Disappoinging Stay

We book Bed and Breakfasts over hotels because of their hospitality but that was sorely missing here. From check-in (there was a permanent note on the door telling us to find the code in our email, then find our room) to no one around to ask questions of (what to see? Best restaurants? Where can we find more coffee pods?) to the non-existent, advertised “wine and snacks served every evening at 5:00), there was no interaction with a host/owner at all. The one bright spot was the young man cooking breakfast but he was either way in over his head or needed help! We heard the place was under new ownership but in our opinion, this person needs to be more involved!

Hospitality missing!

There is new ownership of this place Since a month or 2 ago. The owners are not on premise and don’t even live in the area. They understaff the b&b and skimp on the guests. The kitchen cook (who himself deserves full marks - all 2 circles are thanks to him) tries very hard and works tirelessly but there are quite a few rooms and I’ve never seen a b&b where only 1 person handles all guests at breakfast. The bedding is 100% polyester - horrible! The least I would expect for this price is 100% cotton sheets, so easy to do…. For our room there were no photos of the bathroom because it is a converted tiny closet with a sloping ceiling - I barely could stand in the shower and I’m well under 6 feet. The sink is in the bedroom. We stayed here on the recommendation of friends who were here a few years ago and were very positive (and stayed here with us as well). They were shocked by the difference. . 

There are better options in the area at the same price.

New owners that don’t care

I'm giving them 2 stars only because of Charlie, the kitchen assistant who took charge and did a fantastic job of fixing breakfast for the guests after the primary kitchen staff didn't show.  The owner Todd is not on-site and did not respond to phone calls or text messages.  Charlie gets a 5+, the owner gets a -1.  
In addition, there was a domestic violence incident in the main house (we were in Pheasant Dreams, the carriage house) that resulted in EMTs and police being called, a male guest being arrested, and overall disruption in the main house at 2AM.  Again, I informed Todd by voice mail and text about the incident - no response.  Obviously he is only in it for the money and is a poor example of an innkeeper.

Owner/Innkeeper AWOL

We arrived early evening and simply had to follow a note left on the front door. The whole time we were there, we saw one person who wad very rude. The gourmet breakfast advertised was ice cold scrambled eggs, 1 piece burned sausage and an undergone pancake. Even the salt and pepper were in paper packets. We had reserved 2 rooms, in one the toilet leaked and in the other the sink was plugged. Recommend a different B&B.
